Safely removing a USB device
by Guest Bill Watt- 5 replies

When I connect my camera phone to my Win98 SE desktop it won't shutdown and I need to do a reset. I saw the option to safely remove it somewhere but can't find it again. It won't shut down if I leave it in or take it out. It connects to a USB port. My XP Notebook has an icon in the Sys Tray that you can right click and safely remove it. I also posted in Alt.windows98. If I get the answer there I'll post it here and vice versa. Any ideas? Regards, Bill Watt Win98 Computer Help & Other Information http://home.ptd.net/~bwatt/

Computer shuts off by itself
by Guest vintageman@no-spam.com- 3 replies

This is a Pentium III, 1000mhz system. I ma running Win98se. It worked fine for several months. About a week ago, it just suddenly shut off while I was typing a message on the newsgroups. The other night it shut off when I was not using it, but sitting near it watching tv. Today I left it turned on, but not online. I went away for 2 hours and when I came home it was shut off. Just the computer shut off, not the monitor or other accessories. It's NOT an electrical problem, only the computer goes off. It's not a virus or spyware, I have scanned thoroughly. Windows works fine, as does all the software. I DO NOT get any error message or crash, the compu…

No Desktop icon and start menu i am using win 98 When I boot the computer, it brings me to user profile page that displays correctly. When I chose a profile loads and the screen is blank other than the desktop wallpaper. No Task bar, start button, icons, nothing but wallpaper. The only way to access the system is through control-alt-delete and choose "new task". From new task I can access all programs, even can choose desktop and it shows the desktop icons that you can open. Does anyone have a cure??????????????????

Opening File Types
by Guest Frog- 3 replies
How do I designate what software opens what file types? I currently have Quick Time Player on my system, and this software automatically grabs/opens every .jpg file that I download. Is there some way to designate another software program for this purpose? What is the general feeling about Quick Time Player--good/not so good/bad? Is there something better than this software package? I somehow got this software on my system during the addition of another software package, and it has taken over. My internet connection is via SeaMonkey, if that makes a difference. Thanks for your help, Frog

USB ports don't work on Win98SE
by Guest Tooter102- 17 replies

My husband has an old Dell 200Mhz machine that originally came with Win95. Upgraded recently to Win98SE, hoping to get the two factory 1.1 USB ports to work. They still don't. Under Add New Hardware, I was supposedly successful in adding a "USB Composite Device" and a "USB Root Hub". But after doing that, they still did not appear under Device Manager. Any ideas what else I can do?

Windows Preotection Error? Whoa!
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 20 replies

Just started getting this message upon startup TODAY!!! There's no VxD or other descriptive text with the error. Here's what happened (at least twice today). INTRO The computer is OFF. I hit the power button, get the IBM splash screen and then Windows begins to load. All normal stuff. As Windows loads, the boot screen (in my case, a modified logo.sys) pops up and all the various drivers begin to load as is evident by the flashing lights on the various hardware hooked up through the USB. Again, all normal stuff. Then the boot screen then turns to a black screen (normal again) but instead of Windows continuing to load and show the logon screen…

'Error Deleting File' when empty Recycle
by Guest SANTANDER- 4 replies

Each time I empty the Recycle Bin, I get the error message: 'Error Deleting File': "Cannot delete J+lijs_cl: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename." The Recycle is emptied normally, just this error message irritates. Several years ago, the PC has been infected with virus, so these is consequence of the virus removal procedure. Where the error is located? Regards, S.

Scanreg /fix /opt
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 3 replies
First off, thanks to PCR for this little gem! I knew about scanreg /opt, but did not know about the /fix switch option. Does typing both /fix and /opt after scanreg in DOS compact the registry AND optomize (defrag) it? How about using only scanreg /fix. And why, PCR, did you suggest on another thread to repeat the scanreg atleast twice more? Next, I understand that a registry greater than 8MB cannot be fixed/optomized with this DOS command. My SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT files together are just over 8MB (although the Windows DOS scanreg utility reported that it successfully fixed the registry - took about 10 - 15 minutes). What about an external app…

Adding a USB 2.0 card
by Guest jasmine@hutmail.com- 4 replies

I have a Pentium III, 1GH computer with Win98SE. The usb ports are 1.1 Can I add a USB 2.0 card (PCI type)? I have a slot available, but will 2.0 work with Win98 and on this older computer? It seems everything now wants 2.0, although my camera card reader works on 1.1 even though it says it needs 2.0. ~V~V~V~V~V~

Win98SE config probs
by Guest Robert Baer- 21 replies

Am trying to config Win98SE from scratch and have the following serious problem. Run the Internet Wizard, use manual as i already have an ISP. Put i all parameters possible and then have to diddle modem for 115Kbaud, max FIFO; have to diddle dialing for always use area code; and some other diddling i do not remember to get the damn dialing to work correctly. *First* time, IE does automatically "launch" dial-up, connect, etc. **Problem #1: Absolutely hate it taking forever to login (booting an original 1980 IBMPC XT was faster). So i am on the net (whoopee - except i am asleep due to long wait). Close browser, disconnect. Try IE again, sa…
