Opening a WMV file
by Guest Art- 2 replies
I sent a couple of WMV file to a friend of mine and when the arrived to his W98 computer, the files had a PDF icon in front of it and would open Adobe when it was double clicked on, only to get an error message from Adobe. The file could be run if you open WMP first then direct it to the file to be played? It has been a while for me on W98 but I cannot remember how to get the OPEN WITH menu up to change the file? Any help would be appreciated?? Thanks

Recent version of Flash needs SSE capable CPU ?
by Guest dave xnet- 2 replies
There's a lot of reports in the Adobe Flash player forums of crashes. It's occurring on those using older CPU's and a consensus seems to have been derived between the posters that indeed, SSE instructions have been hard coded into the player with no regard in the code as to whether they are supported or not. One thing that is conspicuous is the complete lack of any comment on the subject amongst the various posting by any Adobe rep. while they, in general, do make appearances and have commented freely on some of the other topics. Did Adobe just sneak it in with out making any announcement or updating the Flash minimum requirements ? The whole thing seems …

Hi, I got an error message when trying to do a windows update. It directed me to an article (# 319585) which ultimately directed me to delete the files named: iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll Then it said to go to the Windows Update web page to install new copies of ActiveX Controls. I tried to do this but couldn't find how or where to get this download for Windows 98. Any advice?

Do You Have A Healthy Brain? The Secret To Mental Agility
by Guest rota6566@yahoo.com.tw- 2 replies

We all know to exercise our bodies to keep fit, but how often do you think about exercising your brain? And what type of exercise does it need anyway? What are the facts? What is the secret to mental agility? Keeping mentally active will keep your brain in good shape. Getting older does not mean that you have to be forgetful! Recent research into Alzheimer's disease found that people who were less active between the ages of 20 and 60 years are almost 4 times more likely to develop the disease. The brain, like the rest of the body, needs to be kept active to keep healthy. You exercise your body to keep it in shape. Now it has been shown that exercising your…

Priority of use of multiple Ethernet Network Adapters?
by Guest ... et al.- 2 replies

How to instruct Win98xE to (if present) preferably use an external wireless USB-based Ethernet Network Adapter rather then an internal wired PCI-based Ethernet Network Adapter? It seems to be trying invainly to use the PCI-adapter even if there is no Ethernet-cable plugged in there. The computer uses the USB-adapter just fine after the PCI-adapter was physically removed. I found msKB # 894564: <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894564/>, that shows how to change the binding order and how to set 'InterfaceMetric' on some WinNT versions, but i can't locate how this should be done under Win98SE. -- Nah-ah. I'm staying out of this. ... Now, here'…

IIRC, in other W98SE machines, didn't have this issue. In Desktop, I want to relocate an icon. I tried dragging with left key and right key/move, in both cases the icon will not move. The icon is one of my utilities, not a windows default icon. How to move desktop icons? ms

Cannot hide files
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 2 replies

Recently I decided to try out an unofficial service pack that transorms Windows 98 into a very modern looking operating system. It works pretty good with a few minor bugs, such as Nero Express 5 not giving me an MP3 preview of the songs I select in a playlist and some other program functions not working properly. So, I decided to revert back to Windows 98 to the way it was before I installed the service pack (it has an option to uninstall and remove all components of the service pack). Everything seemed to have reverted back except for one thing so far. When I go to the WINDOWS and SYSTEM folders, I should have the option to hide all the files with an …

Win98se & SharePoint scripts
by Guest P.Schuman- 2 replies

this is just a techy professional curiousity question... When I test out new applications, like our new MOSS 2007 system I run thru a couple of different older systems... starting with Win98se & IE 6.x Most of the very basic functions of SharePoint work, but the "drop down" menu bars do not... they don't react to a hover or click. I can't really tell if it is an ActiveX thing, or a Javascript thing, or ??? Just curious...

undeletable desktop icon?
by Guest none- 2 replies
Just installed IBM's bluetooth stack on a laptop. Was sooo glad! Started to do the traditional 'cleanup' of an install and found the 'My Bluetooth Places' icon on the desktop will not allow me to delete it. Tweakui does not show it on the 'desktop' tab for icons. I figure it must be a registry entry that needs removing but not sure. Can anyone help with some info. on how to delete this thing? Thanks Happy Bluetooth User (except for desktop icon)

I currently dual-boot with 98 Second Edition and Windows XP Professional. I use AVG and I have discovered that AVG 8 will not support Windows 98 SE and support for AVG 7.5 is currently slated to end at the end of May. Can someone suggest a good antivirus program that works with Windows 98 SE that I can switch to next month. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Gateway PC fires up and then doesn't fire up
by Guest attilathehun1- 2 replies
I got this PC to finally get going when I plugged everything back in. I didn't even use the power button, I just plugged the power cord back into the back panel and whammo! It started, but nothing came up on the monitor screen and the power supply fan didn't turn, and yes I did plug the little 3 pin connector back up to the mobo. I bet if I change the tower case everything will be ok. Ok, yes it is me. And if you don't want to answer anymore questions, then let it be. There are enough professional people here that can answer questions and not make a big deal about it. Another thing is I tried to post another thread and I don't see it. I just bought …

Hi, My computer has Windows 98se. I have a folder with several .FLV files I have collected from YouTube. I am frustrated trying to find a GOOD YouTube FLV file(s) converter to convert those .FLV files to either AVI or MPG format so I can play them on my older Windows 95 computers. I can view these .FLV files using a FLV player just fine on my Windows 98 computer, but I gave up trying to find a FLV player that works in Windows 95. If you have Windows 98 and used a FLV converter several times without any problems, please tell me the name and where you downloaded it. Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your pas…
