Hi.. I've had Windows 98se for many years and I'm looking to get a newer PC. I see that MOST of the systems today come with Windows Vista. I do see an occasional PC with XP but it is usually one that is on "clearance". If I do get a newer PC, which operating system would you reccomend? I have heard quite a few people say that they didn't care much for Vista and I was wondering why that is the case? Thank You Annie

How do you update Windows 98? 1 2
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 31 replies
- 1.5k views
On this Microsoft webpage - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239937/kb/239937 It tells me about the availability of "Microsoft Windows 98 Customer Service Pack". I am assuming that this is a big all-in-one update to Windows 98, which is what I am after. In the above-mentioned article, it says - Windows 98 Customer Service Pack is available for download from the Windows Update Web site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ The problem I am having at the moment is that if I go to the above webpage (using my XP-based PC), I get automatically redirected to - http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us This appears to be …

Identity Stolen Again 1 2
by Guest Dan- 30 replies
- 1.4k views
I think I told most of you how my social security card was stolen in a 2005 break in when I lived in Tucson Arizona. In addition, the computers were attempted to access but fortunately mine had a BIOS password and stopped the intruder. Well, this time I was working on Michelle Mora's image being illegally put on a Painted Sky Elementary School computer and the next thing I know my administrator passwords are changed and I am locked out of the two computers I was working on. This fall a cable was missing from the sub station area. I am now being blamed for computer sabotage. I know my work identity has been stolen. Oh Well, I had planned on not giving…

File extension changer 1 2
by Guest SANTANDER- 29 replies

Could anyone recommend handy File Extension Changer utility, to change files extension? Renaming manually via enable 'Hide file extensions for known file types' option in 'Folder Options' menu is not very convenient since if then whenever we want to rename a certain file, we will always have to include the extension for it, or else we will get a warning prompt. Thanks

Seek opinion on "fix OE errors" 1 2
by Guest Rod- 29 replies
- 1.2k views
I'd like to run one of the free fix-it programs "fix OE errors" available on the web. Any recomendations? warnings? Just checking with the cognoscenti. Any problems are probably with my ISP, my OE shows posts to my fav Newsgroup, but they are not getting replies, nor showing up in Google, so I thought I give these programs a fly, in part, to appease my anxiety. Praise to the knowledgeable.

Printing a complete thread. 1 2

Good morning friends, Jamming along to Fleetwood Mac as a I write--better that *any* meds! Even after firing off that post of yesterday AM, I thought I would try it one last time without my "Spill Chunker" (Spell Checker--Oh, I don't know). I was amazed by just how bad I mucked it up, but I trust you good souls got the gist of it--well, maybe not CPR! <intentional this time> I have need to print out an entire thread using OE6. Is there an easy way? You gotta remember, I used the insane CDO interface for my first two years here--NEVER Again! Thank you for all the heartfelt feelings and well wishes on my behalf. I'm *very* fortunate* in tha…

Antivirus Software 1 2

I have heard about some free versions of software packages that one can download and use to check W98ME systems for viruses, but I do not know if any of them could be launched at the Dos Prompt. There may be times when a System may fail to boot successfully and the only way to get anywhere is by using a Start-up Diskette. Is there some way to check for viruses at the C: Prompt? Thanks!

An Internet Explorer 6 Frustrating Problem 1 2
by Guest turbguy- 28 replies
- 1.7k views
I have had many recent crashes on IE6, SP1 (particulary on content- rich sites, such as nhl.com). When I try to repair it through the add/ remove programs part of Control Panel, repair stops and says it cannot be repaired, please run setup again. The details show it cannot load "mstime.dll". I downloaded a good copy of "mstime.dll" and put it in the windows/system folder. Upon further IE6 repair attempts, I get the identical error. Any suggestions??

Slightly OT, but need help with MS Word on Win98! 1 2
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 28 replies

HELP! MS Word has added a line to my document, and I don't know what it is, or worse, how to get rid of it! It's a line across the page, placed at the bottom of the page. Sometimes on each page. I can't get the cursor to land on it to do anything with it. Well, actually I can get the cursor to make a little double bar on it, and then move the line up or down a slight distance, but that's all. Right clicking on it does not tell me what it is. Putting the cursor on the line and then right clicking to question what it is, doesn't work. The line prints, but doesn't show up if I open the same *.doc using Wordpad. What is this line? How do I get rid …

It is an older HP Platinum 40 with W95 whicjh I had upgraded to W98SE2. I can't find anyway to get it to register the 64 MB RAM. I tried MS Cong and F1 setup to no avail. -- Posted via http://computerhelpforums.net Forum to USENET Gateway

Securing Windows 98(SE) in the Modern Age 1 2
by Guest Dan- 27 replies

1. I would suggest using a wired connection with ethernet and a NAT address within your router. You can go to grc.com and check the Shields Up test to see if over 1000 ports are stealthed with green setting. 2. I would suggest making sure your Windows 98 Second Edition and its associated updates are fully up to date and would suggest using the security cd if you have it although you will have to edit the *.inf as PCR has suggested to show to some programs that it is indeed 98 Second Edition. You will need to use the Windows update site after that. I cannot endorse the use of non-approproved Microsoft update packs and they may or may not work but us…

Ensoniq Creative AudioPCI sound card autoexec.bat woes 1 2
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 27 replies
- 1.5k views
The driver package for this card installs an unwanted legacy audio device inside Device Manager. It also adds a "SET BLASTER" line inside autoexec.bat, which "cancels out" my own SET BLASTER line for my real SoundBlaster card. If I remove the unwanted SET BLASTER line, the legacy audio device simply adds it back in after a reboot. If I remove the legacy audio device from Device Manager (by removing it from my specific hardware configuration profile), what happens is that after any reboot, I find that my own specific SET BLASTER line gets removed! Now that the legacy audio device has been removed from my specific hardware configuration profile, how can I …

From WinXP directly dial up my Win98 and get access to the LAN connected to it. The connection in rejected after typing in the username, password and domain. The username I use is the same as I use to log onto Win98 on that computer. The domain is the name of the Win98 computer. Where might I start looking for the problem. Thanks Harvey

Win98 upgrade to SE 1 2
by Guest technolady@earthlink.net- 26 replies

I have an old Win98 computer that doesn't have internet access, and i need to transfer files from it to a newer computer. Trying to use a flash drive for it, but the flash drive manufacturer requires download of drivers to use it with SE, and it can't be used for earlier versions of Windows. Any suggestions on (1) transferring the files; (2) making the flash drive usable? Thanks.

Tricky Win98 Format 1 2
by Guest Deus0Factus0Sum@gmail.com- 26 replies
- 1.1k views
Hello everyone, It's been a very long time since I've been on Usenet, so please forgive any netiquette faux pas... I have what might be a bit of a tricky format of a Win98 machine... It's P200MMX with two HDs. The master drive is the older and slower of the two, and contains the system files; the slave is the newer and faster, and has windows installed on it. I'd like to format both drives, click the newer faster one onto 'master' and install windows (98) onto it in full (i.e. a normal install, with system files and the program on the this one drive). I'd like to switch the older and slower HD to slave and leave it as just an internal backup, as storage…

IIRC only older versions of Zone Alarm firewall will work properly in Win98, Jim. If you're NOT running Zone Alarm v6.1.744.1, uninstall it now. [if you're connecting to the DSL modem via a router, the router alone should provide adequate protection for the Win98 box. Others here are sure to disagree with me but so be it.] Moving on...…
