Add-ons

While using a library computer, I saved to a thumb drive some web pages that displayed running videos. Then I tryed to display the web pages using the home computer but got the message "you must have Adobe Flash Player installed to view the website properly". So I went back to the library and downloaded the flash player file to the thumb drive then installed Flash Player on the home computer then went to the Internet Explorer Manage Add-ons window but could not determine how to add flash player as an add-on. How does one add Flash Player as an add-on?

It appears that computer users will have USB 3 in 2008 and according to this article it will be backwards compatible with USB 2. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for computing and technology in general. http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9780794-7.html

What is Firewire for?
by Guest jasmine@hutmail.com- 3 replies

I have been looking to buy a USB 2.0 card, and was looking online to see what's available. I noticed one card that has both USB and FIREWIRE. What is the purpose of Firewire? Or maybe I should ask what it's used for. I also noticed some ads saying that it can use up to 127 USB devices. I see no reason to ever need that many, but lets say I wanted 20 devices. The computer has 2 ports and lets say I plug a 4 port hub into each, that's still only 8 usable ports. How could someone get more? Do they just keep adding hubs into hubs, or what? Thanks

Recently when I end some programs running in a DOS window, the window size reduces to slightly larger than a postage stamp. I have been running these programs for years without that happening. I can't find any setting that would correct this. Has anybody encountered this problem? Thanks for any help. Jack

SAFE mode with 1.5GB RAM
by Guest none- 12 replies

Recently installed 1.5GB ram in the laptop. Went to boot into SAFE mode last night and got the "windows cannot initialize, bla, bla, bla something about not enough memory". Well, 98Se works fine, just wanted to clean out some registry devices as the laptop has had numerous upgrades and I prefer not to have old HDDs listed, old CDROM/DVD etc. The SYSTEM.INI has the MaxPhysPage=40000 entry and tried lowering that to 20000 for safe mode but still Windows would not boot, so, is there any way to get 98 to boot to safe mode without physically removing a memory chip? Thanks Vic

Deleting Profiles (.PWL)
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 9 replies

Hi everyone. It's me again...the "INTERMEDIATE" user! It seems the more I explore Windows 98, the more I have questions I have no answers to. I've been stuck in a Windows 98 rutt for the last 5 years or so (that is, I ALWAYS did the same things over and over again...never really explored the operating system's features). I finally just learned how to create profiles which alllow each profile to have specific desktop settings and such. I have since deleted a profile via the USER option in Control Panel and ended up re-creating it a few times (because NOW I'm exploring, you see!). Anyway, I've noticed that my free disk space has been getting smaller a…

Autorun.ini security hole
by Guest foo- 1 reply

The Windows Secrets site has article about how to prevent systems from executing autorun.ini files on removable media. http://windowssecrets.com/comp/071108 It sounds like a significant hole to me. I am surprised that this hasn't come up long ago. The article refers to XP and Vista only. Woody Leonhard has long paroted the M$ line that Windows 98 doesn't matter any more and is a long time Opera denier. The article contains a registry update file REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYS:DoesNotExist" Years I set autoinsert off in device manager and that kept CDs from goi…

HP Digital Camera won't support Win98
by Guest george-thurmann@no_email.com- 4 replies

I just bought an HP Digital Camera model M547. This 6.2 MP model was just replaced with an 8 MP model so it was on sale. My old camera was a 3mp and took excellent pictures (till it died), so I dont need 8mp. However, the camera came with an install CD which has all the photo-editing software (which I dont need), and the USB drivers. I tried to install the drivers for Win98se and found the CD only has software for XP and above. I went to the HP website to download the Win98 drivers and got a message saying they no longer support Win98, WinME, or Win2K. The camera itself seems to work fine, and easily. However, if I can not download the pictures to my c…

Windows 98 SE and UHCD.SYS
by Guest shaz- 5 replies

Recently my computer crashed and although I was able to restore the registry, the usb ports no longer work. I get the following message: "Ntkern.vxd device loaders for this device could not load the device driver (code2)." the solution is suppose to be to download the UHCD.sys file. which i have done. However when i ran the exe file i could not see where on my pc it had been installed and the current uhcd.sys file has not been modified/deleted. Also after restarting my pc the usb ports still do not work. any suggestions as to where i am going wrong? thanks

Computer Security

This thread apparently was finally cleared and I was notified today in my Hotmail account. It is on page 7 of this newsgroup but I wanted to repost it since it was so buried that few people would notice it. The hacking happened apparently around the same time (in August/September 2007) my system was hacked because I was foolish enough to install VPN without realizing it makes my computer as weak as the weakest computer on the Albuquerque School Network according to Chris Quirke, MVP. "Dan" wrote: > I read in the newspapers that DOD has firewalls that can hack your system if > anyone tries to get in there. Do you know anything more about th…

High-speed Internet & w98se
by Guest Sudy Nim- 20 replies

I do have a couple of questions about the correlation with w98se. Has anyone had experience with a DSL modem/router and w98se? Will it be a (valued) improvement over the dial up modem and is there anything to watch out for? The store guy said that the modem is "on" all the time so virus can be a greater threat. That doesn't appear logical to me unless the computer is also on? TIA. I received the modem from AT&T - Yahoo and purchased a 10/100 EtherFast PCI Adapter from Circus City. I guess I'm ready to install this thing and make the connection. My computer is a Dell XPS-T500 purchased in 1999. I have updated it in 2001 with an Intel 824438X 1 GHz Pentium…

Installers
by Guest anganb- 0 replies
Installers Each device within the wireless network (computer, printers, auxiliaries) must be installed with a Network Interface Card, or NIC. The NIC transmits wireless signals from the access device and enables each device in the network to send and receive signals. Installers must also decide which of three industry standards by which to designate to the network. These industry standards are 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g -- these names differing only in the last letter. The "a" standard is the least common and incompatible with "b" and "g." The b standard is most common. The g standard enables more robust digital downloading, and can support with b. The b …

Win98SE & DSL...
by Guest Cagey Bee- 2 replies

Can anybody give me step-by-step instructions on connecting a Win98SE PC to the AT&T/Yahoo DSL service? Or point me to a web site where I can find the information? Should I just try using the Home Networking Wizard? Their tech support adamantly refuses to help with this issue. I already have a network card installed, so you need not explain how to do that. User specific settings
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 8 replies

Is there any way that Windows 98 has the capability to show certain wallpaper, themes, and even files based on the login? For example if I want my wallpaper to be a picture of T-Rex's and monsters, but my wife wants flowers and bubbles, can we set it up so that Windows 98 remembers our specific settings (maybe even startup programs)? Do we choose the Windows Family login, or would it be the login for the ethernet card we have installed? Thanks in advance!
