So I finally bought a laptop, but no restore CD
by Guest mm- 2 replies

OT, in that most of this is about winME, but you guys will know more than others will. I finally bought a laptop, and if I had had more time (it arrived today Thursday and I'm leaving Saturday) I might have bought something else, but it was only 92 dollars plus 30 shipping, and it does look nice, etc. And it's loaded with WinME, but he enclosed a Restore CD for win98. This isn't of much value is it? Not worth taking with me? OTOH, I already have an original install CD that a friend gave me for WinME. Won't that have all the advantages and more of a Restore CD? Should I use it and put all the .cab files on the laptop, so I will have all the drivers w…

Unknown Devices in control panel
by Guest larry@invalid.com- 2 replies

This is 98se. I keep getting Unknown Devices in control panel / system. I removed them, and keep getting asked to set up drivers everytime I boot up, and have to repeatedly hit CANCEL everytime I boot up. I just reinstalled windows on top of what was there, so I would not lose my settings and programs. Now they are back with the yellow error markers. How the heck am I supposed to know what they are when they just say "Unknown Device"? This is most irritating. Thanks Larry

Unmountable_boot_drive
by Guest Scotty- 2 replies
I am using an OEM version of Windows XP on a Dell PC which is about 4 years old. I recently rebooted and I now am receiving a blue screen with the message Unmountable_Boot_Drive. I no longer have the original OEM disks of Windows XP, however, I have Windows XP disks from another computer. I have tried booting from the setup disks and when I get the setup screen I have the choices of hitting the R key for repair or the enter key to resetup XP, however, nothing happens when I hit either the R key or the enter Key. Any suggestions how I can work around this. I have searched through Google and there are several posts about this problem, however, they…

Is there a fundamental reason why a dos progam that switches the display to 640 x 480 x 16 color VGA mode can't run in a resizable (or even fixed size) window on either win-98 or XP? But instead it must run in full-screen mode?

Discussion was originally entitled Computer failure - 02/19/2008, poster BAP, in this discussion forum. The discussion spread to two other computers and issues with those, their systems and other. I have split that discussion into new separate discussions with headings for the individual potentials/issues. Please keep these discussions separated. Background, the Microtime computer had been running Windows 98SE until the computer started to fail. Presently diagnostic routines are being run through to attempt a recovery. The keyboard is erring out and has been tested by using other keyboards which also fail, and the computer apparently never gets to the POST scre…

Display colors
by Guest ms- 2 replies
Used computer, W98 A CRT-type monitor that came with it showed pink background color in desktop, screens, etc. I needed to quickly compare another monitor so did not go into W98 Display Properties to reset colors to my preference. But when I connected my usual monitor to this (new) computer, it displays normal (for me) colors. Question: Display colors are set in the OS AFAIK. I've seen some monitor problems in past, is this a monitor problem, or otherwise what is going on? ms

Local Area connection - task bar display
by Guest Sunny- 2 replies

Is it possible to show the local area/activity connection icon on the task bar? It's the small icon of two computers. (Using Win98SE on another PC and connected to my ISP by cable) It doesn't seem as easy to find it like in WinXP :-)

restarts after shutting down
by Guest Wally Wombat- 2 replies
Hi Problem has just started. When I switch off down the computer from the shut down options, the screen closes, but the hard drive continues to run, the system then reboots normally back onto the desktop. It will shut down if I hold the switch in. It does not seem to be related to any change in software. I have checked the usual places for answers but none seem to fit this "simple" problem Any ideas? Thanks in advance Wombat Eats, roots and leaves.

Damn icons wont go to LIST mode
by Guest bobobobobob@myplace.com- 2 replies
- 456 views
I opened a folder in Windows Explorer. Went to VIEW, FOLDER TYPES, VIEW, clicked on "Like current folder". (Which I have set to view as LIST). I also unchecked the View as Webpage before saving. In Windows explorer, they all view fine. However, I have a shortcut icon on my desktop for each of my partitions. (example) Drive C Drive D Drive E CDrom, Floppy A etc. when I click on them, and open any folders inside, the files are being seen as LARGE ICONS. WHY? (this is really irritating). Thanks Bobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobob -or just BOB.

"RPC stub" error. I finally decided to find out what it is.

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Download_Area/ATW_Library/Windows _Misc/Win___9-Incompatible_version_of_the_RPC_stub_error.pdf It's a 2 page 70KB PDF file. The first page, explaining /why/ this happens is worth it even if you still use a 9600 modem. Absolutely hilarious - yet, sad. Good old Microsoft. I don't know if I can continue to hate Google. BIOS problem
by Guest McDermotts- 2 replies

I also posted this to MS News server, hope it's ok to cross post. I have an old AOpen AX6BC motherboard. Per AOpens advise, I tried to install BIOS update so the system would recognize the larger drive I added to the system. During the update process, something went wrong and a message flashed that said "UNKNOWN FLASH TYPE". Since then, the system will not even boot and no monitor. If I turn it on with the floppy containing the BIOS file in the drive it tries to read for a while and then stops. Same thing if I power on with a startup floppy in drive a. Also, if I power with either one of these disks, if I hit any key on keyboard it tries to read from a dri…

My Documents folder is gone!
by Guest tlotzerguard-usergroups@yahoo.com- 2 replies

I hid "My Documents" and the "Windows" folders on a Slave Partition (G:) on my HP at home, then told the Tools: FolderOptions: View to "Do not show Hidden files or folders". The problem is when I told it to "Show hidden file/folders", they are still invisible. Matter of fact all of folders I set to Hidden attribute are hidden also. I did a DIR in DOS and it could see the hidden folders, but I can't find a DOS command to switch a folder attribute to UnHide. The DOS command ATTRIB only works on files, though, I'm not positive on that one. I was going to make a new directory to copy the contents of the "My Documents" folder and subfolders to, but I ran a pro…
