Slightly OT, but need help with MS Word on Win98! 1 2
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 28 replies

HELP! MS Word has added a line to my document, and I don't know what it is, or worse, how to get rid of it! It's a line across the page, placed at the bottom of the page. Sometimes on each page. I can't get the cursor to land on it to do anything with it. Well, actually I can get the cursor to make a little double bar on it, and then move the line up or down a slight distance, but that's all. Right clicking on it does not tell me what it is. Putting the cursor on the line and then right clicking to question what it is, doesn't work. The line prints, but doesn't show up if I open the same *.doc using Wordpad. What is this line? How do I get rid …

Problems opening Word Pad File
by Guest SDUSER- 2 replies
I saved an important document created in Word Pad to a floppy disk and sure enough the hard drive that I had it stored on crashed. When I try to open the file on the floppy disk on another computer I get the word pad screen and then a pop up error message with the yield sign exclamation point: "An unexpected error occured while opening c:filename.doc" or txt or whatever the extension for word pad is. I looked in the local help section of Windows 98 for what to do and it was no help. I tried opening it on a Windows XP computer and I get the same problem. Is there any way to get a more detailed explanation on what the problem is or any way to resurrect …

Good morning friends, Jamming along to Fleetwood Mac as a I write--better that *any* meds! Even after firing off that post of yesterday AM, I thought I would try it one last time without my "Spill Chunker" (Spell Checker--Oh, I don't know). I was amazed by just how bad I mucked it up, but I trust you good souls got the gist of it--well, maybe not CPR! <intentional this time> I have need to print out an entire thread using OE6. Is there an easy way? You gotta remember, I used the insane CDO interface for my first two years here--NEVER Again! Thank you for all the heartfelt feelings and well wishes on my behalf. I'm *very* fortunate* in tha…

Help! I'm getting the notorious "Type in the name of the Command Interpretor" error message and it appears that my HD is missing the Comman.com (and maybe other files) so that my laptop won't boot up. Can anyone send me a Windows 98 boot up disk? I would hate to junk this laptop. It's not the greatest but it does have a lot of PM type software on it. Email me at jim.flack@gmail.com. Thanks!

I have a legit product key that I got when I bought my computer many many years ago. I decided to wipe my hard drive and format it again and then reload Windows 98. When it asked me for the Windows Product Key I entered it exactly as it is on my Certificate of Authenticity and I do not have enough keystrokes for it to take the number? Does anyone have any knowledge on who I can contact at Microsoft to find out what to do?

by Guest ms- 11 replies

P 120. It has a low density floppy drive which I need temporarily for some work. Initially, seems to have no OS. In the initial POST screen, the hard drive is listed. In BIOS, I went to Autodetect and let it run to be sure, rebooted, the POST display was unchanged, The hard drive appears to look normal there. I put in a DOS 6.2 boot disk, it goes to an A prompt. But changing to C: gives error message "invalid drive specification". If the drive shows up in POST, what results in error message? ms

HP Presario 4530 loose leads
by Guest ms- 2 replies

Power on, fan runs, hard drive light on, but black screen. Quite awhile ago, answer here on this machine was probably a bad onboard video card. Opened up the case, out of the power supply is a loose 4-wire power cable with a small connector, smaller than I see on the CD drive or the floppy drive. The cable harness has a spare data connector tucked into a bay beneath the existing CD drive. But the power supply rating is only 100 watts, so don't think it came with more than 1 floppy drive and 1 CD drive. I was hoping the loose power cable would match a jack on the MB, maybe help video issue. But don't see any 4 pin jack on the MB within reach of the …

Hello all... I have an older computer running Windows 98 (256MB memory, 300mhz, 6 GB hard drive). I use the computer primarily as a backup for my main computer. I have it stripped down to only those programs that I really need. Would uninstalling .NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 2.0 gain me anything in terms of speed or performance? Thanks in advance.

I am running win98SE but with a mobo that is considerably newer. I have the energy saver in the bios set to stop the hard drive from spinning after 15? minutes or so, but afaict, it never stops. Is there a windows or dos instruction that will stop the hard drive when it's not required to do anything? If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-)
