After rebooting into MSDOS mode, I find that I can't restart the computer into Windows. Exit( which may work only internally) doesn't work. What is the command to exit from MSDOS in order to restart the computer in Windows 98? Thanks. Bruce

Tri-Boot Computer
by Guest Dan- 4 replies

Since I am thinking of having a tri-boot computer when I receive my new ASUS motherboard and my faster Intel CPU chip with fan and heat sink and want to do a clean install. What is the suggested procedure for this. I would like to use BING and I do have 2 hard drives that are both really messed up because of VPN (Virtual Private Networking) access and the computers talking to each other. I just want to have 98 Second Edition hidden all by its lonseome self on one hard drive. I want XP Professinoal on the 2nd hard drive and I will not use Cisco Virtual Private Networking because Chris Quirke, MVP told me it makes my computer as weak as the weakest one o…

BIO cache memory
by Guest ms- 8 replies

This desktop is unknown, had not been used for awhile. Typically on turn on, get the bios error I will describe. But on another turn on, it may boot into W98, displays normal desktop. Not enough time to get into DM, etc., as had to reboot to enable mouse, then got bios screen. At the next boot up, it will again stop at the initial Award bios screen, cursor blinking at Cache Memory, blank entry. On one boot, I went into bios, the only item seemed abnormal was the 1998 date as if the battery may be bad. Otherwise, RAM memory was detected, drives were detected. When it stops at the initial screen, if I shut down with the front button, it flashes of…

~4.6 GB data folder on DVD is fully readable from the DVD player?
by Guest Cymbal Man Freq.- 2 replies

I put 1500 .flv files into one major folder, and burnt them onto a 4.7GB DVD on a Win XP machine. I brought the DVD over to my Win 98SE machine, and I don't intend to copy the DVD to the hard drive, just play the files from the DVD. In My Computer, it says the DVD is using 1.99 GB. I'm wondering if Win 98SE will be able to read all of the files in this one folder (~4.6 GB folder)? I suspect every file WILL be available for reading.

Networking W98 & XP - Help
by Guest Jim B.- 4 replies

I am trying to network an XP Dell laptop to a W98 (first edition) Gateway desktop and I'm having some problems. I've read and tried to use most of the tips I've seem in earlier posting, all without success. Both computers are Ethernet wired to a US Robotics router and both computers can access the internet thru the router. However, neither computer shows up in the other's MY NETWORK, nor can they access each other via Find/Search or the RUN \\ methods mentioned in previous postings. Also, the W98 desktop cannot access the printer via the router, though it can access the printer when connected directly to the printer (bypassing the router). The XP can …

Fatal exceptions
by Guest vandenplas- 16 replies

Hello. I'm running Windows 98SE on a 433mhz Gateway with 256mb. For the last month or two I've only been able to read/write 3 or 4 emails before I have to restart the computer. Same thing holds true for surfing the web. I've actually been putting up with this but now I can connect to Aol but it freezes shortly after the welcome screen loads. In the last three days I've had 9 different fatal exceptions. I have tried searching each on on the internet from my other computer but don't find them mentioned anywhere. I ran memtest from microsoft but it said my memory was fine. Any suggestions? Cheers, John

<PING> Bill in Colo. 1 2 3

Oh well couple of days late responding. Just curious Bill,I was about to undertake a EE, and got married instead. Obviously long-range plans aren't my forte. Just kidding, I have the utmost respect and admiration for women. What was your main area of discipline? I used to be quite a ham operator, and RF still fascinates the heck out of me You can read *all* the books you want, author them even, but antenna theory has far too many variables to ever relegate it to a science, it will always be any art, unless you start talking Very High Powered Microwaves, and even then you better not has the slightest burr on the inside of the waveguide<OMIGOSH&…

AVI and WMV

I've been ordering DVDs lately and have no trouble playing mpg and mpeg short preview clips. Nothing over 1 or 2 mb. However avi and wmv won't open. An error message will pop-up asking if I want to search for correct codex online. I click yes but it only takes to mostly pay sites with LARGE downloads. I have wmp9, wmp_classic 6.4 and the Not MS mpc. Planning on d/l VLC later as it was suggested as a replacement. Anyone have a MS link I could try. Since I'm running Win, I'd like to stay within them if I can. Win 98 SE, P166 mmx, on dial-up. -- -------------------- http://NewsReader.Com/ -------------------- Usenet Newsgroup Service …

PDF reader
by Guest bobster- 13 replies

I have used Adobe Reader to read PDF files for many years through it's many different versions. It has always irritated me that it took so long to load it, and open a file in it, that I have sometimes avoided reading things because they were in PDF format and I didn't want the hassle of using Adobe Reader. It took forever to down load a multi-page file, and scrolling through the pages was laggy and jerky. I always attributed this to the fact that I was using Windows 98se and an old PII 300MHz processor. But today, on this forum, someone (sorry, can't remember who) mentioned that they used a free FoxIt PDF reader and that it was smaller and much faster than Ado…

Moving an icon on Desktop

IIRC, in other W98SE machines, didn't have this issue. In Desktop, I want to relocate an icon. I tried dragging with left key and right key/move, in both cases the icon will not move. The icon is one of my utilities, not a windows default icon. How to move desktop icons? ms

Versions of Visual Basic 6?
by Guest ms- 2 replies

Years ago, I downloaded VB6 from the Karen Kenworthy site, which I feel is trustworthy. I have a number of utilities that need VB6, no issues. Recently, I tried a game, it said "your version of VB6 is old, it needs a newer version." Same thing with another program a few days ago. Is there versions of VB6, if so, a URL for the "current version"?. ms

Added more than 512Meg Ram, now no windows! I increaded my ram from 512K to 1.5 gig, and I got this message at the end of autoexect.bat, but I wasn't concerned because on this group or some other I had seen it discused already: When initializing device V86MNGR?: Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilites from your config.sys or autoexec.bat and restart your computer. I found the message on the web and the fix it said was to Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less. Solution found for the error message on start-up "wincnu32.dll is missing" This file is part of the Spyware package VirtuMonde. On this machine, Spybot had deleted all the files but left the references in the registry. Editing the registry and deleting all references to VirtuMonde and wincnu32.dll got rid of the message. Angel, I am truly sorry, I must to apologize to you. I completely missed the link to the iTunes 7.3.2 version that was suggested to you, on the Apple site. I just happened to need to go back for the new version for a VISTA box I am working on [itself a wasted effort as the new iTunes would not download to this 9X box] and noticed the Windows 2000 link at the bottom of the download windows. {okay, don't hit me} About iTunes 7.3.2 for Windows 2000 iTunes is the best way to enjoy your digital music and video with your PC, iPod and Apple TV. iTunes 7.3.2 for Windows 2000 is designed to work with Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later. iTunes 7.3.2 for Windows 20…
