Opening a WMV file
by Guest Art- 2 replies
I sent a couple of WMV file to a friend of mine and when the arrived to his W98 computer, the files had a PDF icon in front of it and would open Adobe when it was double clicked on, only to get an error message from Adobe. The file could be run if you open WMP first then direct it to the file to be played? It has been a while for me on W98 but I cannot remember how to get the OPEN WITH menu up to change the file? Any help would be appreciated?? Thanks

I have a couple of things I'd like to maybe hook up with Win 98 on. One is a old Trend Micron Trek II (NT 2000). The other is a an old thing (NT 2000) on this one (60GB). Any reason either of these wouldn't be OK on Win 98?

98SE and Linux
by Guest Tony Yarwood- 13 replies

Hi guys Sorry to bother you all with this, but I thought I'd ask in my favourite n/g first :) Just about to buy a new box that's got enough oomph to do some dual booting. As I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with XP, I was wondering about 98SE and one of the Linux distributions probably Ubuntu. Has anybody experiences with dual booting 98 and Linux, or have any pointers to an apt website? My gut instinct tells me that 98 will probably have to go on the first partition followed by Linux, could be wrong tho. Many thanks in advance. Best regards Tony

Flash drive Win98 compatibility?
by Guest Tiny- 1 reply

The wife and I are trying to nurse our old computers along until tax return time when we'll buy new ones. We both have AMD750s on GAIXE boards. My old HP burner went mams up so I bought a new one from the local comp store. It came with Nero 7 & claimed to be compatible with win98 but I couldn't get it to burn anything. I used my old burner as another drive with drag & drop capability for back-ups and the like. I only have a 20 GB HD & space is becoming an issue. I took it to the store I bought the drive at & they had to put an older burner in to get it to work with win98 at all. We also discovered Nero 7 won't support drag & drop in win98. The…

thanatoid's computer is 10 years old today, Sept. 27, 2007! Intel Pentium 166 MMX (original) PC Chips M572 MB (I originally got the M571, two died and there were no more in stock but the M572 had just come in so they gave me one) 4 x 16MB EDO RAM DIMM's (original, changed 2 of them for one 64MB DIMM about 6 months ago, total RAM now 96 MB) Matrox Mystique PCI (original) Creative AWE64 Sound Blaster (original) U.S. Robotics Sportster 33.6 Fax interna…

Browser Wars

As Microsoft continues to lose market share to Mozilla Firefox many must be wondering how come Microsoft tries to integrate I.E. and Windows Media Player into their operating system. I would like a bare bones XP and Vista that came without these extras. Mozilla Firefox supports 256 bit cipher strength all the way back to Windows 98/98SE. Mozilla Firefox does not have Active X to be compromised. According to secunia.com --- Internet Explorer still has many issues. http://secunia.com/product/14068/?task=advisories http://secunia.com/product/13/?task=advisories http://secunia.com/product/22/?task=advisories http://secunia.com/product/11/?task=advi…

Getting speakers to work
by Guest Larry- 5 replies
My old speakers on my Win98 Dell stopped working. I just installed a pair of used speakers (also from Dell) in their place, but there's no sound. So I deleted the driver for the Yamaha Legacy Sound system and restarted the computer but that didn't do it. There's also a U.S. Robotics Serial Wave Device. Is that the one I should remove? What else do I need to do or check for? Thanks, Larry

Help - No Volume
by Guest \Lou\- 4 replies

I have no volume when trying to use Windows Media Player 7.1. Other installed players(IrFanView, Real Player,Music Match) work fine. The volume is not muted and I even tried to reinstall Windows Media Player with no change. It's very aggravating when someone sends a media file and I don't have the option to use "open-with". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

installing second operating system or a virtual operating system
by Guest Roxana- 8 replies

Anyone have experience with: Putting a second operating system (such as WinXP) on a multi-partitioned hard disk already having an OS (W98se) on it ? Is this possible? What about these so called 'virtual operating systems' ? Do they work ? If so, is there any advantage or disadvantage to using one of these VOS'es instead of a real operating system ? Sorry for the multiple questions, but thanking you for any answers. Roxana

RE: A good subject line matters more (was: Re: does size matter) Your missing the point Mr. 98 Guy !!! Go back to twidilling with your fingers! He (or she - I will just say He) was simply saying that he wants to create a backup drive for Windows XP and format it as NTFS! Does that exceed your knowledge? I have no knowledge AT ALL about hard drives, but I am sure that we should ALL know the difference between FAT, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS! Anon, your best option is to dual boot like you said. However, I suggest you buy either an external HD, a black CD, or a tape and backup your private information to it. After that, you can install Windows 98SE and make…

Support for AVG Free after August 2008 1 2
by Guest pixturesk@gmail.com- 44 replies

While checking out the Grisoft site for some AVG Free information (I have been using AVG Free for a couple of years), I came across the following information: Important notice "Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum". So I asked about this on the AVG Free forum, got the following response: "I can say that currently Win95 isn't officially supported but AVG Free still works on it... but I can't say that will also be true for Win98-WinME at the point that Grisoft does drop support for them. I can say that most ( not all ) of the othe…

Strange Content.IE5 behavior 1 2 3
by Guest Eugenia- 50 replies

Hi. W98se. My Content.IE5 Folder and subfolders took on a peculiar attribute. I was looking for something in there and noticed that it no longer resembled the regular appearance, where one might find 10 or more alphanumerically named subfolders. It looked like the Content.IE5 that one might find in WinXP. i.e. - generally having roughly 4 alphanumeric subfolders. I've tried everything: DOS Deltree - which still ends up giving me the same result - and then simply deleting those folders (Temporary Internet Files / Cookies / History) from another operating system. Same issue persists. :-( Even after performing the Deltree of Tempor~1 in DOS, once rebooted…

Dual Boot woes
by Guest Mike- 1 reply

Hi folks- I've got a problem. I had Win98 and Win2k together on seperate partitions on the same drive and both were working. Boot manager was working, etc. I can't remember the chain of events, but I ended up running fdisk /mbr and lost Win2k. Win98 booted only after that. Then, I reinstalled Win2k. But, I never got back Win98 in the boot menu. I'e tried adding Win98 to the boot.ini and get the error about ntoskrnl.exe being missing or corrupt. Well, I don't think it needs to be on the Win98 partition, does it? My partition layout is as follows: Primary - win98 first logical in extended - win2k second logical - win2k swap rest of the logicals are for…

I am trying to use a spare power supply as a supplemental power supply. There is no room in the case for a second power supply so I put it outside the case and threaded the cables through the back of the computer case then attached the cables to unattached hard drives. Then, I turned-on the spare, external, power supple then turned-on the internal power supple but the spare, external power supple did not turn-on. What should I do?
