WIN98SE on Desktop. Running only in Safe Mode. Device Manager has no 'Monitors' branch. So I can't install a monitor. How can this be restored? I seem to recollect a post detailing how this might be achived by extracting the necessary files from the WIN98SE disk, but can't now find it. Any ideas? Roger R

Extended FAT File System: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa914353.aspx Vista now has eFAT (or exFAT) compatibility with SP1. Not sure about XP. So what are the key technical differences between eFAT and FAT32? According to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT - theoretical max file size 2^64 bytes (16 Exabytes) vs 4 Gb (2^32) - cluster size of up to 2^255 bytes vs 32 mb (that seems wrong - a cluster can be larger than max file size?) (FAT32 spec is 32 kb, not 32 mb) - support for more than 1000 files in a single directory (what are they comparing it to? FAT32's limit is more than 1000) - support for access control lists …

microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion Cable does not come this far out in the suburbs where I live; so, I only have dial-up connection to the internet. I recently downloaded and installed all the Windows 98 SE critical updates. Prior to that when I was already online in Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, in Outlook Express I could select Send/Recv and send/check my mail while already online. Now when I'm already online I select Send/Recv and try to check mail or send mail my modem connection is disconnected and I have to dial-up again. I can then send/check mail; however, If I click to check mail again, it disconnects me and I have to go through the conne…

scanreg.exe switch syntax ?
by Guest RJK- 9 replies

Hello, An old friend recently presented me with an "old" W98 based standalone PC ! :-) ...built 20th-May-2000 ! After a long fight, (Asus P5A? AMD K6/2-500), and it hanging on a black screen, (after bios post and the "Windows 98 screen" with the "scrolling/rotating" line at the bottom of it), I fought and uninstalled Norton Internet Security, which I suspected was causing the black screen hang, .....and indeed after removing Norton - it will boot up in Windows Normal GUI mode. So ! before things start going backwards I'd like to scanreg /backup ....and label it. Do I have to use the quotes "??? ??? ???" .....and is it possible that 98's sc…

For Franc Zabkar: Recurring Monitor Problem
by Guest DaffyD®- 4 replies
Per Glen Ventura's suggestion, I'm posting this issue here. We have an old Cybervision 19-inch monitor. The problem we have is that on a recurring basis (it started closed to a year ago) the display is compressed into a horizontal line with the rest of the screen black. My son found out that if we tap the top of the monitor, that fixes the problem. Would anyone know what part(s) inside the monitor could be causing this? -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.

Which Video Card?
by Guest Scott- 8 replies

I have a used Gateway E3200 450MHZ with 384 MB RAM, running Win98 First Edition. With the Rage 128 AR AGP1X, AGP2x, 8.0M memory video card that came with it, videos are often choppy. I have a Radeon WBUC070 video card with AGP 32MB, SVGA video card available to replace this card. It looks like the model is 7000 A70L. I have another card ....an ATI Radeon 9200SE Stealth video card with 128MB DDR, DVI Out, PCI version. I assume that either of these cards would be an upgrade. This computer has a Samsung 173P LCD monitor. The computer is used for basic email and internet, which occasionally involves streaming video. There's no gaming done on this system, and no…

Video Card for an older Dell - Should I install a new one?
by Guest GeorgeW6- 1 reply
Hi, My video card was working great until a crash required my reloading Windows 98. From then on I never was able to make it work correctly, despite lots of help here and originally from Dell before the Windows 98 support went off. (The sound is not working, either, but it is the picture quality I need fixed) Since this is an old obsession, I have to revisit the situation. I would like to know if starting over by replacing the video card for a new one with its new software would likely solve my problem. I feel there is no sense in going through all the steps to repair again and again, as I did before. Also, are video cards specific to the computer an…

Mouse pointer static on desktop
by Guest Emrys Davies- 3 replies

My daughter uses Win98 (Not sure) at work and the mouse pointer is static on the desktop. The mouse and another mouse, which works, has been tried in the PS2 port and the USB port, but without success. The keyboard is working OK. I have advised her to look at 'Mouse' in Device Manager to see if 'This device is working properly' and to make absolutely sure that the mouse is properly connected, but she is not at work until Tuesday. Any other ideas please? Thanks, Emrys Davies.
