Missing registry entries
by Guest JoeM- 1 reply

Was doing a virus scan and Norton found a low risk virus that it automatically removed. Just to be sure I looked at the docs for the virus and it mentioned that certain entries may have to be deleted from the registry. Since I use my own account, most of my keys fall under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/windows/current version etc or HKLM/software/microsoft/windows... or internet explorer/main etc. I noticed that I do not have any entries under HKCU/software except an empty default key, and a key named "blah" with the following data; R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;127.0.0.1;*.wired…

My computer gets stuck on the blue "Microsoft Window 98...windows is shutting down" screen. This is happening all the time; I have to physically turn the computer off. My system is normally slow due to using dial-up, so that is not the problem. -- Thank you for any help you can give, ajb

RE: How to change IDE-0 to Ide-1 in windows 98 I reformatted my hard drive in windows 98. However, now I can't boot with my floppy boot disk. I get a messages searching for boot record from IDE-0..OK and invalid sys disk, replace the disk and hit any key. How can I change my IDE-0 to IDE-1 so it will accept my boot disk in drive A. I am unable to type anything, when I hit any key the above message appears and that is as far as I can go. -- Help! Bob M "tim" wrote: > I will repost with more details . My w98se cannot boot up. AVI and WMV

I've been ordering DVDs lately and have no trouble playing mpg and mpeg short preview clips. Nothing over 1 or 2 mb. However avi and wmv won't open. An error message will pop-up asking if I want to search for correct codex online. I click yes but it only takes to mostly pay sites with LARGE downloads. I have wmp9, wmp_classic 6.4 and the Not MS mpc. Planning on d/l VLC later as it was suggested as a replacement. Anyone have a MS link I could try. Since I'm running Win, I'd like to stay within them if I can. Win 98 SE, P166 mmx, on dial-up. -- -------------------- http://NewsReader.Com/ -------------------- Usenet Newsgroup Service …

Whenever I type an invalid web address IE goes to http://search.live.com. I never selected this. Apparently IE has some default to go there, which I want to disable. How do I disable this? I just want a blank page that says "error" like I get in other browsers.

I have a large stamp image collection in ACDSee using the Windows explorer style folder hierarchy. I am wondering if there is a hot key combination to collapse all the open folders under windows explorer? If so, I can try it with ACDSee as well. Ta.

I am about to tell you a story that is unlike any story you have ever heard. Guess what? IT IS TRUE! There is a place in the world that is one of the most remote. A place that no one knew was being studied until 40 years had passed. Well; there are people that live in this region. In the morning, when the sun rises above the mountains, these people wake up. With one exception. They wake up 100. 110, and yes, even 120 years old! They also are healthy and full of life. One gentleman named Gabriel was featured in a major publication because he walked home up a hill everyday carrying a sack of potatoes. At 117! They have extraordinary vitality, their sexual e…

Autorun.ini security hole
by Guest foo- 1 reply

The Windows Secrets site has article about how to prevent systems from executing autorun.ini files on removable media. http://windowssecrets.com/comp/071108 It sounds like a significant hole to me. I am surprised that this hasn't come up long ago. The article refers to XP and Vista only. Woody Leonhard has long paroted the M$ line that Windows 98 doesn't matter any more and is a long time Opera denier. The article contains a registry update file REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYS:DoesNotExist" Years I set autoinsert off in device manager and that kept CDs from goi…

please help - CD writer has suddenly stopped writing
by Guest matthewsarler@yahoo.com- 1 reply
- 332 views
Last night I put a blank CD in my CD writer and tried to copy some files to it. I got the message: 'access denied - make sure the disc is not full or write-protected'. When I clicked on Properties, it showed the disc as full, even though it was fresh out of the box. I tried another new disc and got the same thing. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with something I did recently. I was having trouble ripping CD's to MP3 using Exact Audio Copy (dropouts of a fraction of a second every so often), and someone advised me to 'enable DMA', by checking the DMA box in the Control Panel dialogue box for the writer. It made no difference to the ripping problem so I…

my sapphire video card cannot enable 3D acceleration
by Guest freestonew- 1 reply

hi all. Oh dear! I tracked a problem, but I need more help in fixing it. I just bought a new sapphire 9600xt, to replace a "crappy" nividia gf5200. [yes, the graphic improvements are Treeeemendus!] I was somewhat mystified when my Gothic II would stop at the game loading screen when the exe called it up, even though this old card would not work well, i expected to be able to get maybe to the loading screen, at least. my new 9600xt has the same problem! also morrowind will also not load. but baldurs gate II and neverwinter nights will load. at first i thought this was an issue with the new cd-rw rom. The morrowind files has a "program flow" sheet…

Hi, After using Lexar's "FireFly" (1GB) on my Windows 98se computers by downloading the driver from the link below, I took a chance on a Lexar "Secure II Plus" (2GB) that was on sale ($14.95) http://www.lexar.com/drivers/files/jdusb2.zip Well, I was unable to install a driver for "Secure II Plus" JumpDrive in my Windows 98se. On my wife's WinXP computer, no problem of course. I assume that if I knew the VID & PID numbers, I could add that to the .INF file (from jdusb2.zip) and perhaps, that would work? On my wife's WinXP computer, I looked at properties via Device Manager for "Secure II Plus", (which was plugged in), b…

Reformat, Reinstall, and updates
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 1 reply

Last night, I reformatted the HD and installed everything all over...AGAIN! It's actually quite a peaceful past time lately! I was just wondering something. After I installed the Yahoo messenger for my wife, it automatically installed the latest flash player for IE6, which is Adobe Flash Player 9. I haven't yet patched the computer with the Microsoft updates. I know from past experiences, that if I apply the critical service packs AFTER I've installed Adobe Flash Player, I lose that flash player to Macromedia's flash player 5. My question is, do I really need the Microsoft critical updates for Windows 98, WMP9, DirectX9, and IE6? I'm behind a ro…
