Any thoughts on the benefits of upgrading your Ethernet Card. I'm on cable and have the original Ethernet Card that was installed (1999) NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter Was wondering would there be any increase in speed by upgrading to a newer card. If so, any recommendations. Many Thanks!!! MAK.

My pc is an old one but have serve me well. It has a giant size kb connector and use Serial mouse. It also have a ps2 which I would assume thats for ps2 mouse. When I try to do the installation, after copying the files and type "setup"> it check the integrity (blue screen checking the hardware etc)> "continue" or "exit setup" At this point both the bk/mouse freeze and hence I cannot contine the installation. ( It does not matter whether I use the ps2 mouse or the Serial mouse). I went through the process 3 times and every time it freeze at "continue" or 'exit setup" Please advice what shall I do in order to install win98se, thanks

Floppy drive and FAT question
by Guest Walter Lane- 4 replies
While working on my Compaq 5700t, I removed the power supply. I put it back in, reconnected everything and had problems with the A: drive. I checked connections and redid them. It has power now and will spin the floppy, but it will not not read the floppy and I get a message about an FAT problem. I checked under properties for FAT and it's just blank. Under Win98, should this be reading FAT32? If so, how can I reset it. Thanks, Walter

MS Security patch doesn't "take" with successive scans
by Guest turbguy- 14 replies
Running Win 98 SE, Upon visiting the Mocrosoft Windowns Update site, it scans my systems and says I need: "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" I do use OE (version 6.00.2800.1123), so I click on install, and it goes "through the motions". No reboot required... I scan again, and I get the SAME result, I need: "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" I check my installation history, and it indicates the Update was successfully installed! I re-install, and rescan, same result! What gives??

The software in question is usually some version of On Track's Disk Manager that has been customized for a given manufacturer's drives. I have some Samsung 160 gb sata drives, and the WD or Seagate versions of Disk Manager (AKA Disc Wizard) refused to work with the Samsung drives. Seems that Maxtor was merged/bought by Se…

Intrigued
by Guest Tony Yarwood- 14 replies

Hi everybody Sorry to bother you all with this, it's not really a problem more of a query. I run 98SE as my main os, well the turbo-charged version, patched with the unofficial SP2 and Axcel's 98SE->ME. If anybody here's not tried it you should, it hums! Anyway I digress, even with the superpatch there are various gaming sites that still won't work, I think it's that bloody bloatware Flash Player crap that so many think they need to use these days. So what I've had to do is dual boot with win2k, and everything is working just dandy. However this is where the query arises, I've got a copy of Opera on both partitions and they seem to be linking so…

An Internet Explorer 6 Frustrating Problem 1 2
by Guest turbguy- 28 replies
- 1.6k views
I have had many recent crashes on IE6, SP1 (particulary on content- rich sites, such as nhl.com). When I try to repair it through the add/ remove programs part of Control Panel, repair stops and says it cannot be repaired, please run setup again. The details show it cannot load "mstime.dll". I downloaded a good copy of "mstime.dll" and put it in the windows/system folder. Upon further IE6 repair attempts, I get the identical error. Any suggestions??

Internet Connection Problems 1 2
by Guest Frog- 42 replies

I am sending this message from my XP machine (being radiated according to PRC), I can't get my Windows 98SE machine to connect to the internet. Problem: My Windows 98SE machine had a run in with a very damaging virus. I have formatted the disk in this computer(loosing all of my data files in the process). To this point, I have reloaded most of the software that was originally on this machine. At the moment, I cannot figure out why I can't make a connection from this machine to the router, and ultimately to my Verizon FiOS ISP. I evidentially have a setting somewhere along the line that is incorrect. Here are the steps I have taken to establish an i…

Belkin Netware Products + Win 98
by Guest Adrian- 4 replies

Based on my personal experience with selected Belkin wireless network products: Re: Belkin Range Extender / Access Point (The product can be used for both functions.) I (only) used the access Point option. Above was used in combination with a Belkin USB wireless network adaptor. Both packages state Win 98 as being a suitable os. Re: + Win98SE The combination is a disaster. Sometimes it will work (only after a cold reboot), sometimes it won't. All my settings were correct. I checked them out. Every one of them. My advice would be, "Don't". The Belkin Service Desk on one entire day was totally unavailable. When I did get hold of them on another day, th…

installing windows 98 on a new computer
by Guest anti-geek- 3 replies
hello windows user, i am building a new computer (1st time) and i'm having trouble loading windows 98. windows formatted my new harddrive, but when it starts to open i get a message stating "insufficent memory." the message also says the config.sys or autoexec.bak may be too large. the config.sys only has one line in it. i can't find an "autoexec.bak" file. i have 2 G ram, a pentuim d processor and a 160 G hard drive. so i know that "memory" is not the problem. if anyone has suggestions/ideas, that would be greatly appreciated. i have windows 98 (1st ed) for new computers. i have xp upgrade if i can ever get 98 to function.

I presently have two CD drives installed on my computer - Plextor CD-R PX-W1210A and Samsung CD-Rom SCR-3230. I also have an IOMEGA ZIP 100 drive on this system in addition to a floppy A drive and the hard drive. Here is the layout for these devices as noted in the BIOS: Primary Master - [sT330621A] Primary Slave - IOMEGA ZIP 100 Secondary Master - PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W1210A Secondary Slave - SAMSUNG SCR-3230 FYI, my mother board is ASUS A7V133. Now for my questions: ---I would like to have the system at bootup check the drives in this order: A Drive (floppy), PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W1210A, and then continue to normal boot procedures. How do I make this …
