Every time I start my PC, the volume control panel settings always revert to their maximum levels. This is despite the fact they were adjusted lower prior to turning off the PC. Is there a registry setting that will address this? Or is this indicative of a different problem? Thanks!

MPREXE error message
by Guest thinman- 1 reply

Did a clean install of 98SE , plus, I used the update packs from Gary . Got down to the "Recommended Updates \ Mapped Drives Shut Down" and after the install, rebooted. Now, it locks up before getting into Windows and pops up an error message as follows: MPREXE This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problems persists, contact the program vendor. Have tried booting into Safe Mode with the same result. Booted to the DOS prompt and looked for MPREXE in the Windows directory but found nothing. What's the solution to getting past this so everything works ????…

Accessing W98 files and printers in a wireless network
by Guest Adrian- 16 replies

Previously my network (containing a W98) was wired. I have changed to wireless. I am able to access email and internet alright form the W98, but how do I make files and printers of the W98 accessible by other boxes in the wireless network? When the W98 was hard-wired up there was no problem in doing that, however, now being wirelessed up, I cannot solve the access problem. Adrian.

Both programs state "Failed to read network time from server" A ping cannot reach them either. I renamed HOSTS and shutdown my firewall but still no success. Any ideas? BoB

I was changing the refresh rate on the video adapter. NeoMagic256ZD and when it was set to the highest rate the monitor and laptop blacked out. When I rebooted it said the adapter was set up wrong. It displays as the minimum and cannot be reset to 1028x840 The drivers look ok. Is it possible there is a registry setting than has to be corrected. TIA Bob

Password problem
by Guest Sudy Nim- 8 replies

I inherited a dell laptop Latitude Xpi. I have no additional information or instructions and have no idea as to its operating system. When I turn it on I get a message "enter password" or use control-enter to bypass password. However, I can not get pass this point. It is not the operating system password and I've tried various F-keys without success so never having experienced this I'm guessing that it is a BIOS password? Is there a way around this, or is it too old to bother with and should I just toss it, any suggestions or recommendations? My apologies if this is the wrong group for this question.

Canon SD1000 + Win98se
by Guest P.Schuman- 4 replies

We have an old Win98se desktop that we still use to transfer files and act as a main storage and print server for all the other WiFi XP laptops in the house. We have a new compact Canon SD1000 digital camera, but it will not function/open on Win98se via USB. We rarely install the "software bundle" and merely want the USB driver, so the camera opens as a USB "drive". This works fine for all the flash drives in the house, along with our old Olympus digital cameras via their USB cables. Anyone been able to access the Canon SD1000 using Win98se USB, without resorting to using an external card reader ?

This is the data that comes up on my monitor screen: Pos terminated-data base error Event DBMaint0 called Error Number 3343 Error Description Unrecognized data base format 'C\Pos\pos.mdb' That's all of the error message. I already tried to go into Safe Mode by pressing F8 and F5 after the boot and no luck. Maybe you could help me find safe mode too. Thanks, attilathehun1 -- attilathehun1

Have you heard about the hotfixes from Microsoft
by Guest Dan- 7 replies

Apparently, you can now request hotfixes from Microsoft from the Internet for older Windows systems without even having to call Microsoft. I have read about this but not actually experienced it so I cannot say if it is fully true and/or factual.

Startup Error
by Guest Trainbuff- 3 replies

Hello everyone. This is my first message here, and it concerns a problem I'm having when I get to the main screen (the wallpaper and start menu) in Windows 98. This error message keeps coming up: EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module SHELL32.DLL at 0167:66869ad4. Even before this appears, none of the icons on the screen will come up. The start menu still appears though. If I click close, however, the start menu will also go away. Any suggestions? I stopped using this computer for this very reason and got a new one; however, I'd like to get it running again because I do miss it a bit. In fact, I've got both my Dell computer and this Windows 98 …

Converting USB 1.1 front panel Ports to USB 2.0 ?
by Guest Dingwhistle- 14 replies
Anyone know if its possible to adapt a Dell Desktop Tower 'puters front panel OEM USB 1.1 ports to be USB 2.0 enabled ? Currently, the front panel USB 1.1 ports connect to the Motherboard by some header type plug/socket (looks like a sort of IDE type cable). I have a USB 2.0 PCI card installed and that makes the two inconveniently located rear ports USB 2.0 capable, but not the front 2. They are still USB 1.1. Hope someone might know how to modify this to make it work Thanks.

How to install DSL, how to install ethernet card? 1 2
by Guest mm- 49 replies
- 2.8k views
So Verizon DSL is getting cheap and it's clear IMO that my current ISP (erols/rcn/starpower in Baltimore) is never going to have highspeed. Verizon sent me the kit and started billing me yesterday**, but not until I was on the last page of the Quick Start instructions and 2/3rds of the way through the CD did I learn that I can't, they say, use the USB port, that I have to have an ethernet card. I think I have one in the other room but haven't found it yet and I don't think it has a software CD to go with it. Since ethernet wasn't common iirc in 1998/9, do I need to find software somewhere else. (The ethernet card I found on ebay had a cd to go with it.) I…

can I rip a CD as if it's one track using EAC?
by Guest brigstockedavid@yahoo.com- 13 replies
- 894 views
I've been ripping some classical CDs using Exact Audio Copy (I'm a beginner and most of its features are a mystery to me), and LAME. One problem is that some of these CDs have 'tracks' that aren't really separate tracks - the music is continuous, and the track number is really just a way of letting you get to that part of the symphony or whatever. EAC treats these as separate tracks, however, and the result is that a fraction of a second of the music is missing at the beginning of each track. It even sometimes misses a bit off the beginning of a track that really *is* a separate track. One solution would be to have it rip the whole CD as if it were one bi…

Installing Windows 98 1 2 3
by Guest Logs- 54 replies

I'm trying to reinstall windows 98 on my computer. I succesfully reinstalled it, but it didn't have everything on it. I found the first disck to reinstall and figured that was my problem. So I tried to redo it with this disc but now my computer freezes when i try to install. It freezes when it gets to 100% when saying it's getting ready for setup. I think its the security in the BIOS but I don't know how to change it. Please Help!
