Beware: learner driver. I have W98se as main computer, WinXP in son's room connected via wireless. I cannot seem to get his XP to talk to my W98se to enable printer via his XP. Is this a known problem? is there a workaround, or do I have to purchase another printer for his XP. Thanks.

I bought an Offspring USB extension (it's a USB receptacle pod that sits on the desk). I also bought a Cruzer USB 2.0 flash drive. However, the Cruzer doesn't physically fit in the receptacle pod. Is there an adapter to convert a USB 1 connector to USB 2? Thanks! Scott

by Guest ANTHONY DIODATI- 5 replies

I don't know if this is the best group to ask for help, but I'm ready to throw this thing off the porch! I've been fooling with it just about all day. I have some AVI's that will only play properly in WMP. Al shop is another player I have and like but they won't play properly with it. The voice and video are not in time. Anyway, some play with WMP but others do not, I only get audio. The only way I can get them to play is to install the codec called ffdshow. I have tried the 2007 version, the 2004 version(whole system hangs with it) and the 2006 version, that is said to be " the latest stable version of this software" with the 2007 and the 2004 version, the AVI'…

Are there any limits to the size of the hard disk I can run on a W98SE box? When formatting a hard disk, can I simply use the format utility provided by W98, or do I have to do special things to do with FAT etc. Thank you, Adrian.

Music skips
by Guest Stan- 11 replies

I posted this on windowsmedia.player board but don't know if I'll get an answer there. So if you don't mind I'll try here. Ten year old Gateway comp. but works fine. Win 98SE, Plll 500 mHz, 256 RAM, Windows managed Swap,WMP 9. CD ROM plays a music CD fine. When I "Copy from CD" to Media Library I notice no skips but when I play from Media Library every song has at least several skips and not just at the end of the track. I'll add here that I had these same CD's in WMP9 about a year ago (had to reformat) and they played fine then. I recently had to change the CD ROM and had to put in and older, used one; it's only Quad speed. Any ideas for a cure for …

Lost HDD space
by Guest G- 12 replies

Hi all; Recently I removed a couple of programs from my computer, one of them being "Yahoo Messeger" because I really didn't need further use of it and also needed the disk space, having a fairly old computer. After duly removing these programs I gained an additional 300MB, but lost it again immediately after defrag. I have cleared the history and temporary files folders to no avail; I run Win 98SE and everything seems to run well, but I would like my disk space back if possible. Kind Regards G

I was just wondering since it is now a proven fact that 128 bit cipher strength can be hacked then how come websites such as Bank of America and Citicards are still in the Stone Age and relying on only 128 bit encryption. Bank of America even has the audacity to claim it is the highest level of encryption generally available. B.S. This is totally untrue. The above 2 websites do not fully support Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox gives you 256 bit Advanced Encryption Standard protection which is needed nowadays since 128 bit cipher strength can be hacked even though it is really difficult and requires the proper tools. The surprising thing is open sour…

Hi to all, again...... I am continuing to attempt to clean up my system after my recent computer meltdown (see "Internet Connection Problems"). I see the following message, when I restart my computer in MS/DOS mode: error: Memory Manager not detected. PCI audio driver requires EMM386 or similar. PCI audio driver NOT loading. I did a Google search on "Memory Manager not detected" and there I found an exchange involving Glen Ventura. His message directed the one in need of help to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229186 - Sound Blaster Live! Error Message After Installing Windows. USB 1.0 and 1.1
by Guest freddy- 3 replies

I had a technician ask me if I had a 1.0 or a 1.1 USB on my old Win 98 PC. It is an Emachines Etower 333 with 3.2 GB hard drive and 32 MB RAM. Anyone know-or if not know how I can find out? It was bought in Spring 1999. The question I forgot to ask him-what difference does it make? I am concerned with transfering my photos, videos and audio to my more modern XP or Vista machines. The 98 has NO CD burner just a floppy (LOL).

Win98se & SharePoint scripts
by Guest P.Schuman- 2 replies

this is just a techy professional curiousity question... When I test out new applications, like our new MOSS 2007 system I run thru a couple of different older systems... starting with Win98se & IE 6.x Most of the very basic functions of SharePoint work, but the "drop down" menu bars do not... they don't react to a hover or click. I can't really tell if it is an ActiveX thing, or a Javascript thing, or ??? Just curious...

I need a new motherboard
by Guest Dan- 8 replies

My motherboard etherport was recently fried by lightning. Fortunately, the whole computer was protected except for the motherboard and the lightning fried the ethernet port. Of course my housemate Monty's computer was running and 100% fine and he did not even have a battery back up like me. My housemates Brett and Mark were not at home in Albuquerque, NM at the time. My fried motherboard is an ASUS PS800D-E Deluxe - UAYD and was made in Taiwan. The serial number is 42MGON282. Please advise as far as a replacement board of the same type that will fit in my system and have all the features of this motherboard and more. In addition, it must be compat…

Confused about Microsoft MSLU Unicode install files
by Guest arlo@eudoramail.com- 3 replies

I'm trying to install an app, VLC media player, that requires unicows.dll. So I went to this URL: http://www.microsoft.com.nsatc.net/globaldev/handson/dev/mslu_announce.mspx and downloaded MSLU for Win 98SE. But when I extracted the file, I get two files, unicows.dll and unicows.pdb. I do NOT get unicows.lib, which Microsoft seems to say is in the download. So now I am wondering is this the correct thing for me to download? I am not a developer, I just need the Unicode support in order to get VLC media player to install on my computer. Did I download the wrong thing? Where do I get unicows.lib, and is that what I need? Thanks to anyone who can provide…

USB External Multi card readers question
by Guest Haggard@abuse.com- 7 replies

Some of them come with the drivers for W98. And some of them have USB ports on them. My question is: does this allow you to read thumbdrives that don't come with W98 drivers? Obviously they'd have to be formatted in Fat 16 or 32. As a second question (and even though it's not W98 related) has anyone used one of these with Linux? Specifcially Suse. -- reply to cqcq68a at something like uniserve dot com Running Agent with WINE under Suse 10.0
