Entered data is not retained 1 2

I had a previous recent thread relating to the problem: "Save password in DUN". I have used this desktop machine for about 6 months, an AV check showed nothing. The machine has been otherwise normal. Data in files is edited, saved, retained normally. Scandisk shows a normal hard disk. I can dial up, but when I run my browser, at every one of my usual bookmarked sites, get "Server Not Found". In Control Panel/Internet Connections, Properties, the DUN icon, in domain, I had originally set it correctly, now it shows mail.copper.ne :it is supposed to be net. I reentered the correct mail.copper.net, closed that screen. Reopened the Properties screen, ag…

ISA Plug and Play not working (clean install) 1 2
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 26 replies

Are there are any noteworthy BIOS or Windows 98 settings I need to be aware of to get Win98 successfully installed on a QDI Advance 9 or 10 mobo? (VIA chipset). The reason I ask is that I am having a problem with Win98's ISA Plug and Play mechanism. Win98 is unable to detect any PnP ISA cards. Please note this occurs with the CMOS settings cleared and a clean Win98 install, plus I'm just using a basic VGA graphics card only, or occasionally this graphics card with a Soundblaster AWE64 (PnP ISA). For either hardware configuration mentioned above, inside Device Manager there appears to be some kind of resource problem with this System resource: "IO read d…

A faster modem than 56K 1 2

In the 80's and 90's it seemed like every couple years they came out with a faster modem. I think it's nearly 10 years since they came out with the 56K. Are they ever going to make something faster? Yeah, I know most people are on DSL or some other high speed connection these days, but I live in a rural area and dialup is all I can get. It sure would be nice if they came out with a 112K modem or something like that.

Quantative Measure of People Still Using 98? 1 2
by Guest Smith- 25 replies
- 1.7k views
This presents a legitimate question for software developers updating their programs. To my recollection, the last 98 computer was sold in 2001. That would make the last sold computer seven years old. You would think that the number of such systems still around would be near zero. Yet, anecdotally, lots of 98 users seem to be around. They speak up on newsgroups and forums. They still seem to like their systems and boast of not changing their operating systems. Still having a ten year old operating system does reflect some sophistication of computer skills. I have long wondered if there is any reliable quantitative measure of continuing 98 u…

hope Adobe personell read this;;;;;;;;; how Weak of you to deny certain computer users of the necessary, Adobe product........ even though it is free, you deny win98 users knowing full well they will have to 'update' to 'something', in order to utilise a .pdf. (ps,,,, i Hate pdf's) (ie,, forcing them to 'update' to xp or 2000 or nt or vista,,, and no, i dont give a damn that i typed them out of order... ) today, a friend, non-computer user, brought to me a second-hand 'set top box' so he could tune into the newer high definition channels on the telly,, but he doesnt have a manual on how to plug what into what. i said i would download a manu…

Internet connection problem 1 2
by Guest Alan- 25 replies
I'm running WinMe and had a hardware crash that wiped out most of the files for Zone Alarm (free ed) and AVG Anti-virus. I re-installed AVG OK but ZA won't re-install, and I got various error messages about VSUTIL.DLL not found. However that file was still in C:\Windows\System with its original date-stamp and I tried replacing it without success. I eventually fixed ongoing error messages at startup by finding and deleting residual files and registry entries for ZA, but it still won't re-install. I also got an error message in Total Recorder at close-down saying it couldn't reinstate missing registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\InternetAl…

*I have a WIN98 , HP Brio , its graphics card has got issues and causing me grief . My desktop icons are huge and animated , when I try and change them back and do a reboot as recommended when I get the screen back it tells me my display adapter is not configured correctly or not working , which takes me to a page about installing or correcting the problem by re-installing and rebooting , its a vicious circle of cycles that do not work . I went to my adapter info and it has an exclamation mark on the icon . I have a KM 133 from pro savage card , I think its onboard as well , not sure about that tho , was told by a tech in town that it was . This all come about wh…

Slightly OT - W98 or NT? 1 2
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 25 replies
- 1.1k views
My apologies for the OT post, but I am curious to ask an opinion on this. The machine I have originally came with your choice of 98 or NT4 on it. I have 98SE running pretty well thanks to the support and experience of this group. A friend of mine has a full install CD for NT4 Workstation he hasn't used for years and he is happy to gift it to me if I want it. Apart from the fact that NT groups on the Internet are fairly quiet now-a-days I think am more likely to get an unbiased opinion here I think from anyone who has used it. I don't use the machine for games - I run MS Office 97, and use Firefox and Thunderbird. I would gain stability from switching to…

IE6 is NOT working, why? 1 2
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 25 replies
- 1.8k views
Apologies ahead of time, but I need help on what should be a simple problem. I have four machines: 2 Win98 and 2 WinXP. All works to connect to my ISP, but the IE6 on one of the WinXP's, but then suddenly worked for one session, then quit again. It dials, makes connection, confirms me to my ISP, announces that the connection is made with a little balloon, but then stops and will not download the welcome page? The IE6 promptly sequences through everything until it's time to get the page, then...nothing, no data transfer, just an hour glass. I can't even activate the View Source. Have to stop IE, but then the 'can't show this page' screen is the same as …

Problems activating monitor
by Guest Alan- 24 replies
I have a monitor that used to be connected to a Windows 98 computer but recently has been used with a Windows Vista PC. I wanted to use it on the Win98 computer. However, everytime I boot, the monitor (an old Dell model m780) just sits there. The light beside its power button just slowly blinks, and the monitor never displays anything. When I switch it back to the Vista machine, it works fine. I tried powering everything down completely and removing power from everything for a few minutes, the reconnecting and booting. No change. Same results when I power up the monitor and computer in different sequences. Any ideas? Thanks, Alan

Clean install of 98SE after XP Pro. installed
by Guest Dan- 24 replies
- 1.5k views
Okay, I have decided to do a clean install of 98SE. I have XP Professional installed on the D: drive and 98SE is on the C: drive. I have seen the following web page on the Internet but I don't want to risk messing up the XP Pro. install in any way if possible. http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_98_after_windows_xp.htm Windows 98SE is on the c:\ hard drive but it really is now FUBAR. The software drivers do not even fully load anymore in the device manager even after removing them. Then by using the install hardware driver you can get some of them back but not all of them. I guess I have the option of doing an over install of 98SE but I would p…

Another nail in the W98 coffin?
by Guest keith- 24 replies

Have been using MSNBC news as my homepage for quite a few years. Thats MS as in MicroSoft. W98 didn't seem to care too much for their new and improved website a while back and any vid from that site would/will freeze this computer and are avoided like the plague. No problem with vids on other news sites. But there has been an odd intermittent problem of late. MSNBC.com site will open just fine when I get there from the desktop IE icon but "internet explorer cannot open the site..." if I try to go there ('Home') from some other site AND if I'm on their site and click on any news story and then go back to the main site page via the 'Home' or 'Back' button I'l…

formatting hard drive
by Guest attilathehun1- 24 replies

I formatted my slave hard drive and did a quick format (erase), instead of a complete format. I wanted to put another operating system on the hard drive and now I'm having problems loading it up. It says: Invalid system disk, replace the disk and press any key. I tried to get into BIOS but this message comes up. When I put Windows ME OS disk into it then it says: Boot from CD-ROM or boot from hard drive. When I chose CD-ROM and ran the operating system it got to the point where it says something to this nature: make sure to remove any floppy diskette and press any key to restart your computer. That's as far as I get. Maybe I should've done a complete forma…

Adobe Reader issues

Happy New Year everyone!! My question: I cannot use Adobe 6.01 on that old small computer. It keeps coming up with an Illegal Operation pop up. I do have Adobe 3.02 on it because I got that off my Office 97 disk. I tried to get the Adobe Reader from the Adobe site but all they have for Windows 98SE is the Adobe 6.01. Nothing in between the 3.02 and 6.01. I went up to the http://www.oldversions.com and tried to download 5.05 from there but it kept freezing up. When I did the 3 finger solute, it told me that http://www.oldversions.com was not responding. I was going too try to get the download from http://www.oldversion.com to my desktop that has the DSL …

This is a repeat of last years post on the GA511NA pc card I put in my toshiba 225 cds laptop. I have tried several installs/uninstalls with no luck. The install wizard asks for the 98se disk sometimes and sometimes not. The device manager shows the yellow icon for this installation but I just can not get it to work. Need Advice
by Guest bobster- 24 replies

Well, it looks like I've finally reached the end-of-life with my P11, 300 MHz Win98se machine. My master hard drive went belly-up but I have managed to limp along by replacing it with my properly re- jumpered slave drive. Fortunately it was a clone of the master so it was able to boot-up okay. The dilemma: What to replace my computer it with. I have a good friend who is a well respected local Computer (since 1994) technician who strongly recommends Dell, ONLY because they are the only ones who still sell XP machines. His strong opinion is that Vista is very buggy and doesn't look like it is going to be cleaned up in the near future. Also he says the uniq…

Windows 2000 vs Windows ME
by Guest Angel- 24 replies
- 1.7k views
I have a question: Is Windows ME the same as Windows 2000? The reason I am asking is because my printer is not what it used to be. I can not load it with paper, it jams or all pages go through almost all at once. I have to feed it one page at a time. I bought the printer, 10/30/2000. It is a Lexmark Z51. I was looking at a new printer and the requirements were for one, Windows 2000 or later. I am still using my computer which is a Windows 98SE, bought 6/1/2000. Angel

New k/board has an USB plug
by Guest Jason James- 23 replies
- 1.3k views
I've had my win98se PC since 1999. Its running 85% free resources atm. I've finally had to buy another k/board which has a USB plug only. There is a USB port on the rear of the PC and mention of a heap of USB files after doing a "search for files". My question is: can I simply remove the existing KB from it's circular socket and plug in the new KB to the single USB? I did plug in a coffee-cup warmer to the USB once, but removed it when I found it could only supply 500ma (found this info in one of the port specs list) the CCup was 800ma. Thanx for any clues,....Jason

My kids were playing with my older laptop and tried to use the install disk. Unfortunatly they did not complete the set-up process and I don't have an ID Key. Microsoft support would not help me since the version is unsupported. Any way to get a key for this thing?
