My Documents folder is gone!
by Guest tlotzerguard-usergroups@yahoo.com- 2 replies
- 424 views
I hid "My Documents" and the "Windows" folders on a Slave Partition (G:) on my HP at home, then told the Tools: FolderOptions: View to "Do not show Hidden files or folders". The problem is when I told it to "Show hidden file/folders", they are still invisible. Matter of fact all of folders I set to Hidden attribute are hidden also. I did a DIR in DOS and it could see the hidden folders, but I can't find a DOS command to switch a folder attribute to UnHide. The DOS command ATTRIB only works on files, though, I'm not positive on that one. I was going to make a new directory to copy the contents of the "My Documents" folder and subfolders to, but I ran a pro…

please help - CD writer has suddenly stopped writing
by Guest matthewsarler@yahoo.com- 1 reply

Last night I put a blank CD in my CD writer and tried to copy some files to it. I got the message: 'access denied - make sure the disc is not full or write-protected'. When I clicked on Properties, it showed the disc as full, even though it was fresh out of the box. I tried another new disc and got the same thing. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with something I did recently. I was having trouble ripping CD's to MP3 using Exact Audio Copy (dropouts of a fraction of a second every so often), and someone advised me to 'enable DMA', by checking the DMA box in the Control Panel dialogue box for the writer. It made no difference to the ripping problem so I…

DVD burner with Win98FE?
by Guest Dee- 12 replies
I always assumed I couldn't install a DVD burner on my Win98 First Edition machine because every burner I looked at in stores "required" Win98 Second Edition. Then it occurred to me that maybe it's just the bundled software that required SE and it was not some limitation inherent in FE that wouldn't allow a burner to work. So is it true that I could install a burner and use some free software, such as DeepBurner or Express Burn, that works with Win98FE? Thanks, Dee

My 1999 dell computer chokes when trying to connect to the Internet. This started about two months ago, I use Dial-up networking and I have to redial up to 6 times before it will connect. I get the following: Disconnected from AT&T Dial-UP Networking was unable to complete the connection Error: 629 You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. Double-click the connection to try again. I stopped all virus and pop-up stoppers, tried different access numbers and called AT&T (India) multiple times over a 2 month period. Basically they said my modem drivers are out of date and I should contact Dell for an update. Dell said I have the latest dr…

As I like to have a 65nm-processor in my new computer and the motherboard I looked at didn't supported that, I'm looking for another one. In order to end 17 years of intense study after just 4 or so, I hope for a quick answer to the following question. Here is my Kerio "Primary DNS Server" rule, got from some expert & currently modified only in that I now include the entire NetZero/Juno address range (where earlier I tried to determine just the ones NetZero seemed to want to use)... Primary DNS Server rule Protocol: UDP, both directions Local Endpoint-- Ports: 1024-5000 -- Application: Any Remote Endpoint-- Address: Entire NetZero/Juno range -- Port: 53 ANY app can use it, as currently wri…

The following was recently posted in the win-9x forum on MSFN.org. I thought I'd re-post it here and see if any MVP's have anything to say about it. I haven't verified this particular issue with HP myself. ----------------------- Is microsoft forcing hardware producers to remove win9x drivers from their webpages? HP have just removed their win98-drivers and says thing like this "HP’s licensing agreement with third-party providers granting use of their components will expire." and "Microsoft has stopped providing and supporting certain files related specifically to Windows 98 SE, and this change affects all technology companies. HP, along with other…

WORD PAD HELP!
by Guest Brusso- 2 replies
Whenever I open up Word Pad I have it to where the ruler is showing so that it will know when to drop down to the next line when it reaches the end or I press Enter as it's set to 6 and a half inches (the little slider that you can move left or right on the bottom right side). For some reason or another when I start typing on it the little slider will automatically move itself all the way to the right or even if I cut and paste or copy and paste to the Word Pad it will do this as well. Can you please tell me how I can set it to where it won't do that and so that it will stay at the specified inch that I set it as well. The 2 sliders that you can see are th…

I have a 20 GB Western Digital hard drive that was formerly used as an external drive (slave drive) in a PC with Windows 98. I just attempted to use it as an external drive for my notebook with XP. Upon recognizing it as a new drive, XP said that it needed to be reformatted. I clicked "Yes" and it formatted and now works fine with XP. But now my Windows 98 PC will not even recognize it as a drive. Question: Is there a way to format this external hard drive (using XP, since it is no longer recognized by Windows 98), so that it will work with both XP and Windows 98? (I want to use it to transfer large amounts of data between the two.) Thanks for any id…

WINDOWS 98 QUESTION!
by Guest Brusso- 1 reply

I have this old scanner for Windows 98 which is called Pagis Pro 3.0 and will not work for Windows XP at all. What I want to do is to save these files on to a disk and save them to my other computer that has Windows XP and be able to see them on that computer as well as send them to someone in an E-Mail whether it be a picture to a document or anything else I've scanned as well also. I just want to be able to see these files on my computer that has Windows XP and for other newer versions of Windows that come out in the future for the same reasons as well also. This is also because that other computers may not have these type of conversion files and will on…

Hard Drive wont spin up
by Guest george41407@noemail.com- 1 reply

I have a Quantum fireball 15gig harddrive. It has been working fine as my master. I have another identical drive for my slave. Earlier I started my computer and it would not boot. I unplugged both drives, changed the cable, all the usual stuff. Booted from a floppy and Fdisk dont even see the drive. Thats when I noticed that if I plug and unplug the power connector while the computer is on, I do not hear it spin up. However, the slave drive has a noticable spin up sound. Obviously the drive is trash. Fortunately I had a backup from a few weeks ago and did not lose much. I am not booted from that backup. Anyhow, I'd like to see if I can make that drive …

Old style keyboards ? ? ?
by Guest geotews6@______.com- 7 replies

Does any company still sell keyboards that dont have the windows keys? I hate those extra keys. I never use them, and because the ctrl and alt keys are smaller I keep hitting those useless things. I had several old keyboards and have used them until now. This is my last one and it's dying with a dead down-arrow key. I'd much prefer to get a NEW keyboard since the old ones are usually pretty well worn. Does anyone know of a source that still sells them? (Not Ebay, please). By the way, what do Macintosh keyboards have in place of those things or dont they have them at all? I'd imagine a Mac keyboard wont plug into a PC. Thanks George

Looking for old screensaver

I think it was a Win98 screensaver, but I'm hoping to find the screensaver that allowed a "glass marble" or hurricane swirl over your desktop. I haven't been able to find it through regular searches on the internet. Does anyone know where I can find that file?
