I upgraded 98 to IE6
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 23 replies

I have used Win98 since it first came on the market. Years ago, when they first came out with IE6, I installed it and my system got really unstable. I finally formatted and reinstalled Win98se. Ever since I have never upgraded IE beyond 5.5. I have had many people tell me that IE6 has now been repaired, so I just finally installed it again. I must say it's working flawlessly, at least so far. At the same time I dont see anything different from ver5.5. Anyhow, it now says I have Version 6.0.2800.1106 (why so many numbers?). I am trying to find out two things. 1. Is this the last version, or is there an upgrade (where to get it if needed?). 2. One featur…

shift-delete not working the _first_ time
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 23 replies
- 1.3k views
I usually delete files (folders too) with shift-delete rather than delete; you know, so it says "are you sure you want to permanently delete" rather than "are you sure you want to ... recycle bin" (and with a different icon). Thing is, nearly always, it doesn't work first time: it usually comes up with the recycle bin prompt. To which I say no, then shift-delete again, and it comes up with the right one. It's only on this one machine, and I'm pretty certain it _isn't_ a dodgy shift key - my fingers move very little between the first attempt that fails and the second that succeeds. Any idea what's causing it? (I know I could change it - I know the…

Hi, Does anyone know where I can get the download for *iTunes 7.3.2*? Will this *iTunes* work with the Windows 98SE? I tried the Apples website and the one they have now is 7.4 and it is for XP and above. The reason I want to know is because I need it for the class notes from the teacher. The teacher does podcasts for his classes. TIA Angel

Thanks for Google Earth for 98!
by Guest someone watching- 23 replies

A while back there was a thread on Google Earth, at least I *think* it was this group. Someone provided a link to a modified v4 program for 98. Well, in anticipation of using it SOMETIME it was downloaded. Finally got to install it and wow, it is nice to have this program for W98! Wish I could recall the name of the person who did it (Rick?). So if you were the one who did it, nice job, and THANKS! someone watching

Cannot shut down Windows 98
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 22 replies
I have installed Windows 98SE on a Supermicro P6SBU motherboard. When I go to shut down windows, the screen displays the usual "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message (I can't remember the exact wording), but the PC's power remains on. If I then turn off the PSU power button, the PC momentarily makes a squeeking sound as if I have stepped on a small rodent, then all is quiet and the PC finally stops. Ideally, I would like the power to the PC stopped when I shut down windows using the usual Start button / Shut down method. Any thoughts please? Thank you, best regards, Robert.

filesystem
by Guest Jim- 22 replies

The system properties on the performance tab advanced settings has three button choices at the bottom. The first choice is filesystem: desktop, mobile docking, network server. How does this change the filesystem and what are the changes? I remember something on a Aumha discussion about legacy filesystems by Jim Eshelman on this topic, but now I can not find it. Something about network server settings to optimize the HDD.

win98 se startup issues
by Guest schmenge- 22 replies
Every time I try to boot my computer, I get the message that it's "preparing to run windows for the first time". I go through that process and let it detect devices and install drivers, but when I restart I get the same message again and must repeat the detection process. I remember from a while back that setup makes some changes to some boot files to reflect that it is first boot, but I can't recall which files. Can anyone help with this issue? It's Windows 98 SE, and the computer was given to me by a previous owner; he used it for business and removed all his files then gave me the box. Thanks in advance.

A problem using Bing
by Guest ms- 22 replies
My intent is to format a P166 for use as a DOS computer. It had W95, a prior uninstall of Norton AV caused error screens so I had to format. When I tried a W95 boot disk, format, got error: insufficient memory to load system files. I then ran Bing, it did format, I rebooted with the W95 boot disk, at A:, entered C:, no C:. Ran Bing again, named the drive C, but see legend that the drive is not available to anything as it has Bing installed on it. Then rebooted with W95 boot disk, message: can't find Bing, assume it wants the Bing boot disk. I need to wind up with a C drive for DOS, and have created something else. Advice? ms

Question re USB features on win98se PC
by Guest Jason James- 22 replies
I have just one more question re the USB facilities on my 98se PC. After I successfully plugged a new KB into 1 of 2 USB ports on the rear panel, (initially I thought there was only one) I was looking at some cheap printer/scanners etc for $69. But like all peripherals these days they are USB. I understand that a converter adapter may get me back into the parallel port,..but before that decision I had a look at "System Properties" then "Device manager" then opened 3 headings under "USB Controllers" 1st Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USBUniversal Host Controller (exists in all hardware profiles) 2nd USB Composite Device (exists in all hardware profiles) 3rd U…

The smaller files consist of 173 blocks containing 615 C0h bytes plus one zero byte. If I delete these files, they will reappe…

With apologies for the repost - one positive outcome of the first one was that I discovered that what I thought was a valid cut-and-paste wasn't: for some reason the two surviving newsgroups have slightly different punctuations in their name. (Positive suggestions only, please - the details of my problem have been lost in the heat on the other thread, and please post to that one if your only contribution is to say I'm in the wrong place!) Migrating to Windows 2000
by Guest DaffyD®- 22 replies
- 1.5k views
My employer has been giving away surplus computers with Windows 2000 installed and I brought one home so I'll be migrating to that OS. I've heard for years that it was a more stable OS than 98. I'll still leave 98 on my old computer but it won't be connected to the Internet. I enjoy Win98 SE but I'm frustrated that support for it among many hard/software producers has ended and there are new online services that don't work with 98. Also, I've had increasing problems with 98/Windows Explorer crashing. I installed a 250 GB hard drive on my 98 machine but it will only recognize 127 gigs. I'm hoping that will be resolved in the W2K environment. I guess where I…

how do I get a CD out of this drive?
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 22 replies

apologies ahead of time, but this group has ALWAYS helped, so I'm back. I just spent two fruitless hours searching the net for info on this and zip! Here is the problem: I've got a CD Drive, Creative 24Xmx Model CR-585- B that has a CD in it that I cannot extricate. Yes, I tried the drive in a known good system....with power applied and bus attached. Either the drive is dead, or the eject switch is dead, but either way I've got a CD in there I can't get at. I removed four screws on the bottom and removed the metal plate. Then, removed two screws holding in the PC. But only one end lifted up and I'm reluctant to start forcing things when there's a 'p…

BIOS upgrades - reflashing the BIOS
by Guest Bill in Co.- 21 replies

Just spent an "interesting" (to put it mildly!) weekend on this project to enable a microprocessor upgrade. I wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted, suffice it to say, or you might end up with a paperweight. :-) You know, it wouldn't be quite so bad, except that in some cases, there is no reverse path available (i..e, it's a one way trip) - which seems unforgiveable, on their part! My question is: why do these BIOS manufacturers sometimes make it so damn difficult to upgrade/downgrade or go back to a previous version (especially when going from one manufacturer to one its subsidiaries, or vice versa (like Dell and Intel)? And not only that, but …

Desktop Icons puzzle
by Guest Jim- 21 replies
- 1.2k views
I have been having problem with Desktop icons when using the arrange icons menu selection. The icons become misaligned on left side of the screen even though the name, type, size and date are in order the icons themselves are in disarray. There are two users with personalized desktop settings. If I set the display properties dialogue on the effects tab with large icons checked, this will straighten out the misaligned icons. If I switch back to small icons the correction will continue to this setting up to the point that I use the arrange icon or line up icon on the application menu. This becomes tiresome when working. Any idea as to what is wrong with this fe…
