Windows Preotection Error? Whoa!
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 20 replies

Just started getting this message upon startup TODAY!!! There's no VxD or other descriptive text with the error. Here's what happened (at least twice today). INTRO The computer is OFF. I hit the power button, get the IBM splash screen and then Windows begins to load. All normal stuff. As Windows loads, the boot screen (in my case, a modified logo.sys) pops up and all the various drivers begin to load as is evident by the flashing lights on the various hardware hooked up through the USB. Again, all normal stuff. Then the boot screen then turns to a black screen (normal again) but instead of Windows continuing to load and show the logon screen…

'Error Deleting File' when empty Recycle
by Guest SANTANDER- 4 replies

Each time I empty the Recycle Bin, I get the error message: 'Error Deleting File': "Cannot delete J+lijs_cl: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename." The Recycle is emptied normally, just this error message irritates. Several years ago, the PC has been infected with virus, so these is consequence of the virus removal procedure. Where the error is located? Regards, S.

Scanreg /fix /opt
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 3 replies

First off, thanks to PCR for this little gem! I knew about scanreg /opt, but did not know about the /fix switch option. Does typing both /fix and /opt after scanreg in DOS compact the registry AND optomize (defrag) it? How about using only scanreg /fix. And why, PCR, did you suggest on another thread to repeat the scanreg atleast twice more? Next, I understand that a registry greater than 8MB cannot be fixed/optomized with this DOS command. My SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT files together are just over 8MB (although the Windows DOS scanreg utility reported that it successfully fixed the registry - took about 10 - 15 minutes). What about an external app…

by Guest jasmine@hutmail.com- 4 replies

I have a Pentium III, 1GH computer with Win98SE. The usb ports are 1.1 Can I add a USB 2.0 card (PCI type)? I have a slot available, but will 2.0 work with Win98 and on this older computer? It seems everything now wants 2.0, although my camera card reader works on 1.1 even though it says it needs 2.0. ~V~V~V~V~V~

I am aware I can defragment in safe mode, just curious as to why suddenly, after 5 years, my defrag is doing what others have experienced, and aborting half way through and starting again? I always use "end it all" with av shut down. any ideas? Thank you very much.

Win98SE config probs
by Guest Robert Baer- 21 replies

Am trying to config Win98SE from scratch and have the following serious problem. Run the Internet Wizard, use manual as i already have an ISP. Put i all parameters possible and then have to diddle modem for 115Kbaud, max FIFO; have to diddle dialing for always use area code; and some other diddling i do not remember to get the damn dialing to work correctly. *First* time, IE does automatically "launch" dial-up, connect, etc. **Problem #1: Absolutely hate it taking forever to login (booting an original 1980 IBMPC XT was faster). So i am on the net (whoopee - except i am asleep due to long wait). Close browser, disconnect. Try IE again, sa…

While using a library computer, I saved to a thumb drive some web pages that displayed running videos. Then I tryed to display the web pages using the home computer but got the message "you must have Adobe Flash Player installed to view the website properly". So I went back to the library and downloaded the flash player file to the thumb drive then installed Flash Player on the home computer then went to the Internet Explorer Manage Add-ons window but could not determine how to add flash player as an add-on. How does one add Flash Player as an add-on?

It appears that computer users will have USB 3 in 2008 and according to this article it will be backwards compatible with USB 2. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for computing and technology in general. http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9780794-7.html

What is Firewire for?
by Guest jasmine@hutmail.com- 3 replies

I have been looking to buy a USB 2.0 card, and was looking online to see what's available. I noticed one card that has both USB and FIREWIRE. What is the purpose of Firewire? Or maybe I should ask what it's used for. I also noticed some ads saying that it can use up to 127 USB devices. I see no reason to ever need that many, but lets say I wanted 20 devices. The computer has 2 ports and lets say I plug a 4 port hub into each, that's still only 8 usable ports. How could someone get more? Do they just keep adding hubs into hubs, or what? Thanks
