Partitioning a HD with win 98 with windows xp CD-Rom
by Guest Ken- 9 replies

My question is this. I have a hard drive that won't boot and has windows 98 (not sure what edititon). The motherboard still boots, and I have it set up to boot from CD-ROM. When I put my windows xp pro CD in, it attempts to boot from it and fails. I seem to recall last time I played with 98 years and years ago, that I needed a boot disk on a floppy. This will be very inconvenient for me to get now, and I was wondering if there is a way to get around it, so that I can use the windows Xp pro CD in the rom, to boot up to the partition screen so that i may attempt to repartition the drive to windows XP?

CDilla wat dat?
by Guest Rod- 8 replies

It appears common advice here, to have a brace of programs for malware, Spybot and Adaware. I must say I am quite pleased with their cleanup routine, but it seems that at every Spybot run, on my machine, it picks up CDilla. Does this malware keep reinventing itself, or is there something I can do to prevent it re appearing ? I am not au-fait with the general nuts and bolts of the spybot program. Thankyou very much for any advice. R

Lost second hard drive

Advice would be welcomed about what to do and in which order. 1. Win98SE PC hung (rare event here, especially with only a couple of apps loaded) so rebooted via front panel hot reboot button. 2. BIOS then reported no 2nd hard drive (Primary slave). It reported both CD drives as Atapi CD-Rom when (I think) it normally identifies them by brand and type (on CD-ROM, other DVD RW) 3. Boot process was very slow. DOS CHKDSK took 4.5 min. overall (on HDD #1, 5 logical drives total 80 Gb, 75 pct. full). 4. After Win98 loaded HDD #2 (drive H) was absent, Fix It Utilies Scandiisk would not load at all, MS CHKDSK found and repaired errors in c:/windows/sysbckup…

Removing a hard drive from a desktop
by Guest Larry- 17 replies

A friend's eight-year-old Windows 98 SE Dell Dimension recently came to the end of its days. The hard drive stopped being accessible. She's throwing the computer out, but wants to keep the hard drive around for possible recovery of data at some point, namely her huge e-mail folder. I was trying to remove the hard drive. I disconnected all the cables, but the hard drive seems immovable. I thought that hard drives were supposed to be relatively easy to remove. I see no moving parts or clips or anything that would enable me to take it out. There are some small screw heads in the corners of the hard drive, but they looked too "locked" into place to be regula…

Return Items to Start Menu Folder Win98SE
by Guest pixturesk@gmail.com- 10 replies

I went on a pruning binge in the Win98SE Start Menu folder in an effort to lessen the number of programs that start with the OS bootup. I went too far by deleting the "Accessories" folder with its arrows pointing to Games, Communications etc. Where can I locate this folder so I can copy it back to the Start Menu folder. Thanks.

Cannot hide files
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 2 replies

Recently I decided to try out an unofficial service pack that transorms Windows 98 into a very modern looking operating system. It works pretty good with a few minor bugs, such as Nero Express 5 not giving me an MP3 preview of the songs I select in a playlist and some other program functions not working properly. So, I decided to revert back to Windows 98 to the way it was before I installed the service pack (it has an option to uninstall and remove all components of the service pack). Everything seemed to have reverted back except for one thing so far. When I go to the WINDOWS and SYSTEM folders, I should have the option to hide all the files with an …

Installing New Desktop Wallpaper on Win98SE
by Guest pixturesk@gmail.com- 15 replies
I am trying to install a new 98SE wallpaper from the folder C:\Windows \Resources, to where I extracted 2 folders with a new wallpaper in each. The instructions were to click on the registry icon in the folder to install the registry entry into the registry which was successful. However, when I go to Display, then click on the far left tab, these new wallpapers are not there in the list. How can I locate these wallpapers then try them on my desktop? I am not that tech savvy, so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

Remove My Computer toolbar
by Guest ms- 2 replies

A mouse click in my windows shell program caused a new toolbar in Desktop, "My Computer", across the top of the screen. I've used this shell for 4 years, the problem is in windows, not caused by the shell program. I have a My Computer icon already on Desktop. How to remove this new, unwanted toolbar? Is there a registry key that controls it? ms

Why don't my date and time stay in memory?
by Guest Phil James- 6 replies

I have an IBM ThinkPad A20m running W98SE which has been working just fine since I got it in 2000. We took it with us in or motor home for a 4-month trip from which we recently returned. The computer was well-cushioned in a bag in one of our cabinets. We didn't actually use it on the trip, so it just sat in its cushioned cocoon for 4 months. When I started it up after we got home, it went to the configuration screen and asked me to reset the date and time. I did so, and Windows 98 started; everything worked normally. Next time I started it up the same thing happened, as it has each time since. Why isn't the date and time going to memory and resid…

open letter to W98 users 1 2 3

It's beginning increasingly apparent that I will not be about to keep up with the "deluge" of 98 trials and tribulations for much longer. I first cut "my teeth" here, and the great part of so many of you originals are still around--(Don't nobody croak anymore" ;- I do know Alex will be missed, although I never get to speak in person. As many of you know, (and much to CPR's chagrin) I have also moved to three XP groups, but always have my times here. I'll continue to answer questions as best as possible but with out the wit, and the "quick-draw". (I *never* was either!) I'm not looking for anybody's sympathy, but I thought those involved should n…

How long will it last?
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 13 replies

I was recently reading posts on the msfn.org and read a few things that I thought this community might know about (maybe there are some people from here who go there also). The first thing was that Windows 98 SE will soon be "dead" to the internet. It will no longer be able to connect to newer websites that require a newer browser/flash player and shuch. And since IE7 cannot be installed on Windows 98, Windows 98 will soon be unable to be used for this purpose. Then there were unofficial service packs which apparently allowed for XP-only software to be installed on Windows 98 SE. (There's also a service pack called Revolutions Pack or RP for short…

Antivirus software
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 5 replies

As per another thread, I stated that I do not use an antivirus software. For about three months now, things have been good. However, with all the good advice I was given in relation to the said topic, I have decided that perhaps I should reinstall an AV program again. I used to use AVG. But I would like input as to which software is very good. I run Windows 98 SE on an IBM 300 PL with a Pentium II (355 MHz) processor and 192 MB of RAM. AVG seemed to work fine for me, but did cause a slow startup. Is there any other AV software that is not only free, but very reliable and easy on system resources? At this particular junction, I am open to any s…
