Quantative Measure of People Still Using 98? 1 2
by Guest Smith- 25 replies
- 1.6k views
This presents a legitimate question for software developers updating their programs. To my recollection, the last 98 computer was sold in 2001. That would make the last sold computer seven years old. You would think that the number of such systems still around would be near zero. Yet, anecdotally, lots of 98 users seem to be around. They speak up on newsgroups and forums. They still seem to like their systems and boast of not changing their operating systems. Still having a ten year old operating system does reflect some sophistication of computer skills. I have long wondered if there is any reliable quantitative measure of continuing 98 u…

Repair Windows XP by using the XP installation CD
by Guest admin_papa- 15 replies

Hello Everybody Just wanted to share my new experience. If your system fails to start due to an error corresponding to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Just boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Launch "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot Cheers, Carl -- admin_papa

Bootup - Shutdown logger 1 2 3 4
by Guest PSRumbagh- 75 replies
- 3.3k views
I would like to produce a (text) file that shows when (date & time) bootup is completed and when shutdown is initiated. The file needs to append itself everytime bootup and shutdown occurs, i.e the file grows bigger with time. For example, over a year period the file will probably have many hundreds of entries in it. The program must NOT delete previous entries. Any suggestions?

I've got a sealed, original Win98 CD, manual, etc. I give up on WinXP, too slow, and more importantly lost features I liked in Win98. So, in abandoning WinXP and installing Win98.... Where do I get a complete set of the really necessary updates? Robert

Killing the search suggestions on Google
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 14 replies
- 1k views
Lately when I type in a word or phrase to search for in google, these search suggestions pop up under my typing. I absolutely hate that feature. All it does is steal my focus of what I am typing. I want to block this feature in all browsers (IE and FF). I know that disabling java script works, but I dont want to do that because it interferes with other functions. Is it possible to block this, or do I need to just find a new search engine?

Upgrading Win98 to Win2000
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 12 replies
- 859 views
Has anyone successfully upgraded Win98se to Windows 2000? If you did, were there any problems? I am considering this. Of course I'll test it out on a backup copy of my Win98 installation. I know the purists will say to start from a fresh installation, but there is now way I will even consider reinstalling 8 years of programs. If it dont work, I'll just stick with 98. -OR- The other option would be to install Win2000 as a dual boot. But if I was to do this, is is possible to import all the installed applications from Win98 without reinstalling all of them? thanks

M572 processor upgrade update - mainly for Franc
by Guest thanatoid- 4 replies
Hi Franc, I DL'd the utils you mentioned, and decided to just go ahead and flash the BIOS with the "990224sj" hacked version. I figured I could always go back. Well, it worked fine and I am now running an AMD K-6 475MHz CPU set at 418 MHZ (or something) on a "300MHz max" board!!! (It runs at 475 as well and MIGHT even run at 500 or 550 but I don't want to overdo things. Better to "underclock" (?) than to overclock in this situation, I think.) It took about 50 reboots, fiddling with the RAM sticks, and several intermittent "windows protection errors" but everything seems OK now. The hacked BIOS is INFINITELY more customizable than the origina…

ATTN: Franc Zabkar, I have a specific M572 question, if I may...
by Guest thanatoid- 3 replies
Franc, I would really appreciate an answer to this simple question regarding the difference between the M571 (which you have so comprehensively discussed on the M571 site) and the M572 which I have. The M571 site talks rather casually about using AMD K-2 processors up to 450 or 500MHz, even though the "stated" max CPU speed of the two MB's is 300MHz. I now have the original Pentium 166MMX and I can certainly live with it, but I also have 3 AMD processors which could be put to better use than as mobiles hanging off the ceiling :-) I tried an AMD 333 and a 350 last night, and could not get them to work. (A shop nearby gave them to me for free :-) …

The mystery of the PCChips M572 motherboard connector for add-on USB "card"
by Guest thanatoid- 11 replies
Hi gang, I want to connect a Belkin 2xUSB port "card" to my PCChips M572 motherboard. The motherboard has a twin USB connector which has 2 rows of 9 pins, with one of the 18 pins missing. I have the manual, and the first two pins, facing back of computer, are marked 1 and 2. On the motherboard, /of course/, they're marked 2 and 1. But I don't think it matters, since I am pretty sure both rows are the same. The one "blank" pin is irrelevant, since it is where the S-Gnd connects, which I believe doesn't matter since 3 of the 4 configs in the Belkin manual do not even use that 5th pin. The Belkin card has 2 5-pin connectors and a very comprehensi…

Third Harddrive Causing System Halting
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 8 replies

On Sunday I plugged in a 3rd harddrive. I unplugged my CD drive and put this 3rd drive on the second IDE channel. The first one has my normal two drives. The drives are #1 = 40gig with 2 partitions. #2 = 30gig with 4 smaller partitions. When I plugged in this 3rd drive, a 40gig drive, I partitioned it as the entire drive, no partitions. I only plugged this drive in temporarily to backup my entire system, but left it plugged in for the last couple days to rearrange some files. The problem is that ever since I hooked up that 3rd harddrive, my computer was constantly falling asleep. If I copied or deleted a bunch of files, the computer would hang for as m…

Are you looking for a Windows XP registry repair solution for your computer? There are many ways to do a repair, with some of them being easier, and some others being very risky as well. I once had a registry problem as well, one that caused my PC to run really slowly, and hang at random times. I was finally able to fix my registry easily with simple software. 1. Symptoms Of Registry Errors Errors in this area of your computer can result in different consequences on your PC. The most common ones include processing/ loading speed issues, the Blue Screen Of Death, and frequent hanging or crashing of the computer. If your computer is experiencing any of these symp…

Wireless and Windows98se
by Guest LL0945- 16 replies

I am trying to connect a windows98se pc situated in an iron garage approx 6ft from the house. I am trying to connect using a wireless netgear wg311v3 pci adapter in the pc. My main router modem is also a Netgear DG834G and is about a further 20 ft away (in the house). I initially found I could connect wirelessly but signal was weak. I therefore invested in a netcomm homeplug np290W combo. This works brilliantly with my main computer in the house as I have located the unit near me. I cannot put this unit in the garage as there is only one power point out there and already it has two power boards connected - although not all points are turned on all th…

Intel 915 chipset and drivers for W98?
by Guest someone watching- 2 replies

Looking to buy an IBM laptop with Intel's 915 chipset. IBM's web site shows support/compatibility from W2K upward, no W98 support (I guess because of the chipset). Googled for info, found some but there is still a question about proper USB2 support (seems you can get 1.1 but not 2) and ANY audio support (there is none!). Decided to ask here; anybody ever try to get 98 running with Intel's 915 chipset? Did you succeed? You know where drivers are available? Thanks

Hi, thanks for the suggestion from Gary, Jeff, Philo and Ben on how to restore my windows98 system after I deleted some operating files. I went to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm, and copied a floppy disk "windows 98SE, consume, no ramdrive". Then I inserted this disk into my computer, turned on the power, now the screen is: "non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike with any key when ready...." So the computer still can not read the bootdisk. The computer also does not respond to any letters, and F1-F112. The bootdisk does not work! What can I do now? Thanks, Mary

Keyboard and mouse disabled in safe mode
by Guest petfit- 4 replies

I installed Registry Mechanic and ran the Compact Registry function but when it restarts it hangs. The advice is to restart in safe mode and double ckick are particular file in the application to trick it into thinking its run. This has worked once but now that I've tried to run the compact regisrty again I can't get to Safe mode as the keyboard is not active when I get to the Windows Startup menu. If I trick it to default to safe mode by crashing the Windoes load the keyboard is still not active at the Startup menu and the mouse is inactive if I get to Safe Mode. How can I get into Safe Mode and have an active keyboard and mouse ?
