computer won't start up
by Guest lutra- 19 replies

Hello. Yesterday I started up my computer quite normally. When I opened OE it froze. This happened a number of times and so I restarted in SAFE MODE. From there I did a number of things like VIRUS CHECK, SPYBOT and did a delete and clean up of files. Scan disk, defrag, etc. Later I went into normal mode and tried again.......another freeze up. Did a restart and then disabled NORTON Internet Security and ANTIVIRUS. Then OE opened fine and I was able to do a little more work online. Shut down normally. Today I pushed the start button......did NOT notice any peculiar sounds or something out of the ordinary....the screen went just past the DELL COMPUTER SCRE…

To whom it may concern, After an accidental shutdown of the Windows 98 machine I was using, no programs are listed under Start -> All Programs. I have been interacting with Microsoft Technical Support regarding potential solutions and have received some good tips, but nothing has solved the problem so far. I would like to hear from anyone who may have experienced and solved this problem. Thank you. Jean-Pierre P.S. I have verified the folder shows hidden files.

Win98, then WinXP, and now only Vista??
by Guest Bill in Co.- 19 replies

Well, this is a bit OT, and I'm still a die hard Win98SE fan, but.... I was just checking this out, and it looks like even WinXP is getting harder to find on a new system these days. (For example, it seems Circuit City sells their systems only with Vista now). It appears time is running out. I checked the Dell site, and apparently you can still get a new system with WinXP, (but probably not for much longer, I bet). Which is a bit scary. WHO wants Vista????? (At least XP would be tolerable!). I'm almost tempted to get another computer with XP - before that is too late. I believe you can get a new Dell Inspiron, with WinXP, for about $1000,…

Display loads at 640x480 res & cant change
by Guest Gary- 19 replies

Win 98se with SIS 530 display hardware version 163, driver dated 4-14-1999. On boot sometimes the display comes up at 640x480. Going to settings, display, settings, the resolution bar is stuck at the low resolution! Can't change it without rebooting (sometimes several times) before the resolution bare is unstuck and resolution can be reset to 1024x768 with no problem. Things are then ok for several boots! Checked SIS site and there is a new driver version 1.08 dated 2002-11-14. Using a HP vs17e flat panel display. Any chance the new driver will fix or cause more troubles?

I am aware I can defragment in safe mode, just curious as to why suddenly, after 5 years, my defrag is doing what others have experienced, and aborting half way through and starting again? I always use "end it all" with av shut down. any ideas? Thank you very much.

More Network Password Issues
by Guest Jay- 18 replies
Greetings! I'm posting this after reading the thread started 07/21/07, and not having any success with those suggestions. I have several old Win98 machines which used to be networked. Now they're stand-alones, but they keep asking for the username and password. If I type in anything or nothing at all and click OK, I get a residual message from the old network days saying that the default desktop will be loaded. The previous "administrator" locked out the Control Panels, and now not only can't I stop the thing from asking for usernames and passwords, I can't adjust any settings or install some software I need on them. Is there some way to reset it wit…

I am running windows 98 SE. When I defrag, it gets to around 10 % then it starts all over again. Never finishes. Anybody knows what could be wrong? Is there another defraging program out there you would recommend that is compatible with windows 98? -- ----------------------------------------------------- øivind reinemo

Stand-alone virus scanner for Windows 98?
by Guest Tony- 18 replies
Can anyone recommend a stand-alone virus scanner that will work with Windows 98? I need something I can use for maintenance that I can burn onto a CD-R disc - put it into the CD drive and then scan the system. FYI, Trend Micro makes a great stand-alone scanner sysclean.com, but it only works for Win2K/NT/XP. Thanks!!!

Starting up your PC
by Guest attilathehun1- 18 replies

I'm having problems starting up my PC at all. I think a wire is loose on the power button assembly. The power supply works, because I tried on another PC and it booted up. Isn't there a way to start your PC by touching 2 points on the motherboard? I took a PC class a while back and my teacher often started his PC by touching 2 points on his motherboard with a screwdriver? If there is a way to do that please tell me. Thanks, attilathehun1 -- attilathehun1

Printing from messages received here
by Guest attilathehun1- 18 replies

I was having problems printing because the print was too small. Well, I just figured out how to get big prints from these messages that we are receiving here. Use selection , then right click on the selected area, choose print preview, then choose, as selected on screen. Then on page fit choose whatever you think is right, in my case I the biggest I could fit was 125% on one page. So, now I figured out how to get prints that are big enough that you don't have to use a magnify glass on it to read it. See, I find out something that will help out someone and I print it out for them. No probs. Maybe I'll get good luck on Monday playing the stock market.…

Fiesta Recently I have been constantly getting the following IE6 error message: IEXPLORE.EXE-Application Error The instruction at 0x10003dfb "referenced memory at 0x006e0069". The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program Click on cancel to debug the program When this occurs I have the choice of either logging off or rebooting. My 1999 dell computer chokes when trying to connect to the Internet. This started about two months ago, I use Dial-up networking and I have to redial up to 6 times before it will connect. I get the following: Disconnected from AT&T Dial-UP Networking was unable to complete the connection Error: 629 You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. Double-click the connection to try again. I stopped all virus and pop-up stoppers, tried different access numbers and called AT&T (India) multiple times over a 2 month period. Basically they said my modem drivers are out of date and I should contact Dell for an update. Dell said I have the latest dr…

Re: 250 GB drives - please help Adam wrote: > Not sure what the potential problem is with ScanDisk+Win98SE+ > Big Drives First, understand that there are 2 scandisk's. One is the DOS scandisk (scandisk.exe) and the second is Windows scandisk (scandskw.exe + diskmaint.dll). Then there is defrag (AKA windows defrag). The windows scandisk and defrag have problems when the number of allocation units (AKA clusters) exceeds a certain number (I think it's 4 million but it could be 6 or 8 million). The windows ME versions of scandisk and defrag have a higher limit (and most people recommend you use them on your win-98 system for other reasons anyways)…

YES, I do....but before I put it in and start trying........could someone tell me what the procedure is and how I should respond to hopefully get my old girl up and running.
