wim 98 WMP Help
by Guest ANTHONY DIODATI- 5 replies

I don't know if this is the best group to ask for help, but I'm ready to throw this thing off the porch! I've been fooling with it just about all day. I have some AVI's that will only play properly in WMP. Al shop is another player I have and like but they won't play properly with it. The voice and video are not in time. Anyway, some play with WMP but others do not, I only get audio. The only way I can get them to play is to install the codec called ffdshow. I have tried the 2007 version, the 2004 version(whole system hangs with it) and the 2006 version, that is said to be " the latest stable version of this software" with the 2007 and the 2004 version, the AVI'…

Size of hard disk question 1 2
by Guest Adrian- 35 replies

Are there any limits to the size of the hard disk I can run on a W98SE box? When formatting a hard disk, can I simply use the format utility provided by W98, or do I have to do special things to do with FAT etc. Thank you, Adrian.

Music skips
by Guest Stan- 11 replies

I posted this on windowsmedia.player board but don't know if I'll get an answer there. So if you don't mind I'll try here. Ten year old Gateway comp. but works fine. Win 98SE, Plll 500 mHz, 256 RAM, Windows managed Swap,WMP 9. CD ROM plays a music CD fine. When I "Copy from CD" to Media Library I notice no skips but when I play from Media Library every song has at least several skips and not just at the end of the track. I'll add here that I had these same CD's in WMP9 about a year ago (had to reformat) and they played fine then. I recently had to change the CD ROM and had to put in and older, used one; it's only Quad speed. Any ideas for a cure for …

Lost HDD space
by Guest G- 12 replies

Hi all; Recently I removed a couple of programs from my computer, one of them being "Yahoo Messeger" because I really didn't need further use of it and also needed the disk space, having a fairly old computer. After duly removing these programs I gained an additional 300MB, but lost it again immediately after defrag. I have cleared the history and temporary files folders to no avail; I run Win 98SE and everything seems to run well, but I would like my disk space back if possible. Kind Regards G

I was just wondering since it is now a proven fact that 128 bit cipher strength can be hacked then how come websites such as Bank of America and Citicards are still in the Stone Age and relying on only 128 bit encryption. Bank of America even has the audacity to claim it is the highest level of encryption generally available. B.S. This is totally untrue. The above 2 websites do not fully support Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox gives you 256 bit Advanced Encryption Standard protection which is needed nowadays since 128 bit cipher strength can be hacked even though it is really difficult and requires the proper tools. The surprising thing is open sour…

Audio Driver and Memory Manager Problems
by Guest Frog- 9 replies

Hi to all, again...... I am continuing to attempt to clean up my system after my recent computer meltdown (see "Internet Connection Problems"). I see the following message, when I restart my computer in MS/DOS mode: error: Memory Manager not detected. PCI audio driver requires EMM386 or similar. PCI audio driver NOT loading. I did a Google search on "Memory Manager not detected" and there I found an exchange involving Glen Ventura. His message directed the one in need of help to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229186 - Sound Blaster Live! Error Message After Installing Windows. Well, there at the top of this article were the exact…

USB 1.0 and 1.1
by Guest freddy- 3 replies

I had a technician ask me if I had a 1.0 or a 1.1 USB on my old Win 98 PC. It is an Emachines Etower 333 with 3.2 GB hard drive and 32 MB RAM. Anyone know-or if not know how I can find out? It was bought in Spring 1999. The question I forgot to ask him-what difference does it make? I am concerned with transfering my photos, videos and audio to my more modern XP or Vista machines. The 98 has NO CD burner just a floppy (LOL).

Win98se & SharePoint scripts
by Guest P.Schuman- 2 replies

this is just a techy professional curiousity question... When I test out new applications, like our new MOSS 2007 system I run thru a couple of different older systems... starting with Win98se & IE 6.x Most of the very basic functions of SharePoint work, but the "drop down" menu bars do not... they don't react to a hover or click. I can't really tell if it is an ActiveX thing, or a Javascript thing, or ??? Just curious...
