I need a new motherboard

My motherboard etherport was recently fried by lightning. Fortunately, the whole computer was protected except for the motherboard and the lightning fried the ethernet port. Of course my housemate Monty's computer was running and 100% fine and he did not even have a battery back up like me. My housemates Brett and Mark were not at home in Albuquerque, NM at the time. My fried motherboard is an ASUS PS800D-E Deluxe - UAYD and was made in Taiwan. The serial number is 42MGON282. Please advise as far as a replacement board of the same type that will fit in my system and have all the features of this motherboard and more. In addition, it must be compat…

Confused about Microsoft MSLU Unicode install files

I'm trying to install an app, VLC media player, that requires unicows.dll. So I went to this URL: http://www.microsoft.com.nsatc.net/globaldev/handson/dev/mslu_announce.mspx and downloaded MSLU for Win 98SE. But when I extracted the file, I get two files, unicows.dll and unicows.pdb. I do NOT get unicows.lib, which Microsoft seems to say is in the download. So now I am wondering is this the correct thing for me to download? I am not a developer, I just need the Unicode support in order to get VLC media player to install on my computer. Did I download the wrong thing? Where do I get unicows.lib, and is that what I need? Thanks to anyone who can provide…

USB External Multi card readers question

Some of them come with the drivers for W98. And some of them have USB ports on them. My question is: does this allow you to read thumbdrives that don't come with W98 drivers? Obviously they'd have to be formatted in Fat 16 or 32. As a second question (and even though it's not W98 related) has anyone used one of these with Linux? I just recently installed Win 98 SE - I previously had win 98 - I did so because I purchased a Wireless Lan PCI adapter and when i attempted to install I received a message that I needed Windows 98 SE - when I installed 98 SE - I attempted to install the Wireless Lan PCI adapter and again received the error that I needed to have 98 SE or newer version of windows installed on the computer - I checked the system properties and they list the operating system as Windows 98 Second Edition - I assume there is a system registry file that did not update and therefore that is likely preventing me from installing the Wireless Lan PCI adapter - does anybody know what…

I can remember installing a Windows-2000 (I think) defrag file on my Windows-98SE system some time ago...I did this to make the defraging my system faster. Well, I have lost track of the name of that file and where it should be installed on the 98SE system. Can anybody enlighten me on this subject?
