scheduled task job (access denied)
by Guest pedro28@gmail.com- 3 replies

windows server 2003 r2 sp2 I created a domain acocunt called domain\username and added that account to the "log on as batch" and "log on as service" and "backup files and directories" in local security policy. When the job runs the log shows access denied. To clarify I set the job to run with the account I created and with the correct password which I also validated. I notice the job will only run if I add the above account to the adminsitrator group and I do not want to do that. What other priviliges are needed for a scheduled task job to run without adding it to the administrator group? Any help is grealty appreciated thank you.

Exchange 2k7 backup with ntbackup
by Guest mmark751969- 1 reply

I am having to backup my exchange 2007 server with windows backup on windows server 2003. I notice that ntbackup is able to see the e2k7 server and the information stores in it. And it is able to do a backup. What i am wondering is when i go to do a restore - on the restore and managed media tab. I see the both the information stores, the log files and mailbox database folder. But i don't see any catalog information on the right pane in that window(it just says no entries found when i click on either the log files folder or the mailbox database folder). Is this normal, or the way it should be. I am wondering if i need to install the exchange 2k7 management…

High CPU Usage After KB958644
by Guest jason.hill- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
Hi, We installed the critical update KB958644 on a Windows Server 2008 machine 2 days ago and have experienced a massive increase in CPU utilisation, apparently for the System process. Our performance monitor reports typically showed the web server running in the 5-15% CPU utilisation range for the whole day even under fairly heavy load. For the last 2 days, the CPU graph now looks like an earthquake has hit and we have had to reboot the server both days to reset the CPU to normal. Today, the graph was showing 90%+ CPU utilisation and we were not able to RDP to the box and all web sites were non-responsive so had to get the ISP to do a hard reboot. The grap…

Printer deployment best practices
by Guest Nuno Santos- 1 reply

Hello. I Have installed a new server 2008 as a Primary domain controller. The rest of the servers are 2003 server and all the clients are windows XP professional. I'm trying to deploy printers to the users with group policy. Each user will have only the printers that are defined in the policy. What is the best way to perform this? 1-Install the printer in this PDC, go to print management and deploy the printer to the correspondent policy? 2-Directly create a rule in the policy "user configuration-->preferences-->Printer" Both options are not working very well. With the second option i can install some printers, others are not installed. I…

csrss.exe High I/O in combination with Terminal service
by Guest Vincent- 1 reply
Hi, Currently I’m running into some issues which occur on each and every windows 2003 server that I’m managing: When someone logs in on a server the csrss.exe process starts to use up a lot of disk I/O. It seems to have a minimum of 10 MB/s with a maximum of 80 MB/s although the average seems to be around 30 MB/s. The high I/O continues until the user logs off. The high I/O also stops completely when (and this is especially weird) the Terminal service client screen is minimized, but high disk activity will resume as soon as the screen is restored. I am aware of knowledge base article 934330, and even though the article in question states the fix…

File server search
by Guest John- 1 reply
I am not sure where to post this question but I suspect I will get a few... different suggestions. We have an AD domain with 2003R2 servers, and many files stored on server file shares. We would like to use search to look for words inside documents (mostly MS Word, som MS Excel). Most of the clients are XP pro. The search from the clients works sporadically. When we say to search the contents all of the files in a folder and sub-folders sometimes it finds it and sometimes not even though you know it is there. Is there a tool or a better way to do this where the files are? TIA

Event 202 Paged Memory Pool Empty
by Guest Sandy Wood- 1 reply

Just inherited the task to administering our Win2003 Enterprise file server. The server has 16GB of ram and is connected to our SAN for our organization's file services. This morning I was copying some files in the SAN and I started getting some errors in copying large files. Seemed the server was out of storage. Looked like a memory issue. In checking the System event log, I ran across an Event 2020 for the Srv service. It said "The server was unable to allocate from the system paged pool because the pool was empty". Also, I couldn't Remote Desktop into the server. I could login at the server console but it was so low on resources it couldn't even load…

by Guest Scott Townsend- 3 replies

I have the Server (Win2008) setup for Shadow Copies. I can see in the Properties of the volume that there are 2 a day for the past 2 weeks. Though when I go to folder where stuff has changed, there are no previous versions. The Drive that has all of the Shadow Copy Data on it has 207GB on it, so there is something there... How can I see the Shadow Copy files?

Creating Group Policies in General
by Guest Jim in Cleveland- 2 replies

I was curious what the best practice is for creating a group policy. Is it better to combine a bunch of settings into one group policy or is it better to create a group policy for each particular setting that you want to implement? I know that latter might become overwhelming if you create dozens of GPs. But if you do it that way, couldn't you label the GP accordingly? What is the difference between Link order and Precedence? Regarding precedence order, I understand that the higher numbered GPOs are processed before the lower numbered ones are. With that being said, suppose GPO2 hides the control panel and GPO1 does not. If GPO2 is processed first, …

Servers "stop"
by Guest Guus Ellenkamp- 2 replies

I have a small network with 2 domain controllers with Windows Server 2003. They are also used as workstations, which has worked fine, until a few weeks ago. Since this time they "freeze" for a few minutes like every half hour or so. I cannot find anything in the error log and can't imagine what it is. I have the feeling it is network related, but cannot pinpoint it. Today I heard that when there is only one user using them everything is fine. As soon as more users arrive, the problem starts. I have been experimenting with IPV6, but still can't imagine why this would affect the system(s). Please advise.

Hello Everyone, I have recently gave up my subscriptions to Experts Exchange due to the lack of responses when posting an item. (The help was perfect when someone did respond) My question is, I have posted a "How to" on here, and I would like someone to tell me where to view it or search "My Questions" at a later time. If this is not a possibility, I would like to know. Thanks everyone.

Time service problem
by Guest PaddleHard- 3 replies

Greetings, We are running server 2003 r2 fully patched domain controllers. Everything has been running fine for quite a while--event logs running clean, no replication issues, etc. This afternoon, I noticed my time changed on my XP box. I got on our PDC Em. and it was skewed by an hour just like my PC. I had set this server a good while back to pull time from an external source and it has been humming along. I hunted down the KB article on setting an authoritative time server and dug into the registry. It appeared that some setting had been changed, so I got that fixed and changed the source (time.windows.com didn't seem to be working) to USNO ntp. Now it seem…

by Guest richlich- 6 replies

Windows Server 2003 x64 with latest patches and SP. VSS service will not start. Gives "file not found" in System log. ImagePath in registry is correct and vssvc.exe is in the path (%SystemRoot%\system32) shown in the registry. Running vssadmin list writers doesn't show any writers. Please help as this is affecting our ability to back up or Exchange 2007 mailstores and the System State on this server. Many thanks!

office Update EULA
by Guest John- 6 replies

I am using WSUS to push updates, and recently have had on Office update that requires the end user to accept an EULA thing, yet it doesn't take the accept. It keeps popping up. It appears to go away with admin rights. I do not want to have to visit each one of these machines with the login out... required. Is the a fix for this so the user can accept it or it is done from the server? I posted this under WSUS group but haven't seen an answer.

Lack of Drivers in Windows Server 2008 Standard Trial?
by Guest beyeriii@aol.com- 2 replies

Hello Group, I recently downloaded Windows Server 2008 Standard Trial and installed it on a test machine, ie. MB: Asus CPU: 800Mhz PIII RAM: 512MB HD: 10GB ATA133 Video: NVidia GeForce 256 Ethernet: Intel Pro 10/100 (or maybe RealTek) Audio: SoundBlaster Live! The installation went very smoothly, but afterward I noticed I didn't have Audio or Ethernet connectivity. I looked in Device Manager and sure enough there are two "Other Devices" labeled "Ethernet Controller" and "Multimedia Audio Controller", and the icons for these devices have a black on yellow exclamation mark. I also noticed my Display Adapter is set to a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter…

KMS count for windows 2008 / Vista
by Guest Igor Karasik- 20 replies

Hi, We have KMS 1.1 service installed on windows 2003 server. Our KMS key (group B) activated on this server. We successfully activated 6 windows 2008 servers vs. our KMS server. Currently we have only 4 Vista Business computers and they don't want to do activation. Error message: "Error: 0xC004F038 The computer could not be activated. The returned count from your Key Management Service is insufficient." 1) After reading different articles about KMS activation - if I understand correctly - I thought Vista machines will do activation if we have at least 5 windows 2008 servers OR 25 Vista machines. Apparently, even with 5 windows 2008 servers we need …
