As I understand the PDC emulater normally is configured as the Authoritative Time Server, however, should I configure more time servers for redundancy? If I do, will they serve as time servers, or until I promot one of them as the PDC role? Is there specific doc on this?

Windows 2003 oder 2008 Datacenter Lizenzierung
by Guest Andreas Wensing- 2 replies

Boot issue
by Guest psalm19- 3 replies

I used System Commander to move free disk space from the d partition to the c partition. All seemed to go well except upon reboot the system goes through post and then just hangs...no errors just hangs...odd I know. I can get it to boot back into the OS if I boot from the System Commander CD and select "install generic MBR" from the available options. The system is then able to find the MBR and all is well. I contacted System Commander support and they didn't offer any useful help. I also ran "fix mbr" from the Win2003 CD which didn't fix the issue either. Got any ideas on how I can permanetly fix this issue without needing to reinstall?

Win2K3: Insufficient system resource exist

...to complete requested serivece. Dear Sir, I encountered this issue these days. My customer reported that their server met this situation after running our system for about 1 month. At that time, even taskman or notepad cannot open. Because we didn't open perf monitor at the beginning, it is hard for me to analyze the issue. Below is my 1st question: This error message indicate handle leak or memory leak? Another question is: I gathered some data by Process Explorer. I found that the sum of all private bytes of processes doesn't equal to the total comit charge. The total private bytes are only about 300MB but commit charge is as high as 1.3GB... I'…

server hardening and security checklist
by Guest wuzzle- 1 reply

Hi, I have been asked to come up with a checklist for junior techs who build out servers. We are concerned about hardening and using best practices to secure Windows servers. I am not authorized to run scans against the machines and thus I need them to have some form of accountiblilty. I suppose the closest thing I can compare it to is a paper audit. Anyway, any advice, template or suggestions would be helpful. Mitch

I am trying to configure Remote Terminal Services and seem to have successfully done so at least on my local lan. I would like to try this from outside. What port(s) and transport(s) (TCP and/or UDP) do I need to open on my router to allow me to connect to a remote session on my server from the Internet?

Spontaneous Reboot
by Guest hpoincare- 10 replies

Late model IBM Server Windows2003 Server standard SP2, almost all updates except for the ones dating back a week (or two). The server will go through the POST and then display Windows Splash Screen, then show progress messages; “Starting Windows”, “Applying Security”, “Applying Settings”.. – eventually showing the login (if lucky). But before login, the server will spontaneously shutdown/reboot. I was able to boot to safe mode just fine. No shutdowns/reboots at all in safe mode. The last error in the System event log before shutdown refers to the WSUS. Event ID 1010 “A process serving application pool Wsus Pool failed to respond to a ping” Next …

Laptops hang at "loading profile" after login w/ domain account...
by Guest JoshGfromPortland- 8 replies

Issue: Laptops hang at "loading profile" after login w/ domain account when not on the domain. OS: Windows XP SP3 Domain Controller OS: Windows 2003 x64 SP2 Details: Laptops login fine when connected to the domain. Recent Changes to Group Policy: none Recent Software Installations: none Other Recent Changes: I think DHCP and DNS was recently turned off on one of our servers. Possibly also the server role was changed so it is no longer a domain controller. We still have another domain controller running DHCP and DNS. I will try to confirm these changes with the techs and get more details. Also there have been many Windows patches lately. Possibly Relat…

Log AD users who send print jobs
by Guest News Group- 3 replies

Correct me if I'm in the wrong news group for my question. I'm looking for a way to log/track all AD users that send print jobs to our printer. Lately, users have been wasting a lot of paper and I want to see who is doing this. One of our printers is an HP 8100 shared out on a AD Windows 2003 SP2 box. Any thoughts our suggestions? Dan

"save as" on server
by Guest Roland Schneider- 2 replies

Hello, in one network we have the following problem: users on workstations can't use "save as" with any application such as Word, Notepad, Adobe PDF standard, to a 2003 R2 Server (no active directory). In this case the application hangs. All other functions, such as copy, delete, save ..., are working well. This happens on all clientcomputers in this enviorement. I tried it also with administrator-rights for this users. Has anyone a idea to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!
