newbie - automate email
by Guest patti- 10 replies
i have no experience w/ windows server but am trying to come up with a way to automate an email. I want to email a file on Server A. (Can't use outlook to send b/c requires user being logged on & then there's outlook's security prompt) every Monday. Windows server is Server B. Is there a way to do this via the windows server? Does smtp just send email w/o security prompts? Can things be sent by the system as opposed to a user being logged on? If anyone could point me in the right direction....I am trying to learn. Not even sure what to be googling. thanks for the help. patti

DCPROMO Question
by Guest Ann- 10 replies
I was reading up on decommissioning a DC. This is the last server in the domain, no other servers are in the domain. I plan on running DCPROMO to remove Active Directory and then shut the server down since it's no longer needed. My question is (and it's a weird one), when you're going through the wizard and it states that the domain will no longer exist, does that rip out all the information from the DNS server for that domain I'm removing or will it stay there? (it's on a completely different server) Odd question I know, I hope I asked it right. Thanks in advance.

Like in win 2000/2003 we could install Adminpak.MSI / suptools.msi or resource kit to have additional snap-ins' & tools installed on the server what is it like in win 2008? I created a win 2008 server core & installed a DHCP server on it. To be able to manage it thru remote MMC running on a win2008/Vista machine I could not find the DHCP MMC snap-in. Please let me know how to do install all these additional snap-ins & tools on a system

Network recycle bin? Windows 2003 Server Std.
by Guest Calab- 10 replies
Is it possible to create a network recycle bin on a Windows 2003 server, either natively or with third party software? I have 1.5TB of data on a RAID5 array. If I delete a file on the server from one of my workstations I would like to be able to recover it the same way I could recover a file deleted locally. I don't need the ability to track file changes/versions. I don't want to waste drive space by backing up tonnes of files.

Can't browse server shares
by Guest LincolnIT- 10 replies
We have about 6 Windows XP machines that suddenly cannot browse the server shares on the DC. These computers are not running the login scripts from the server automatically and I think this is why. Other XP machines are not having this issue. If you try to browse to the server using its ip address the shares do appear. I've tried the following with no success: -using a host file with the servername and ip address -enabling netbios over ip -ipconfig /flushdns

by Guest AzSav- 10 replies

Hi, Our main DC (dns, wins) has a constant high cpu (60-99%). It is a 2003 server with SP2. Via Process explorer, i found in the threads tab that srv.sys has contant a minimum of 45% cpu time. It mentions 0x16602. Searching on the net does not give me anything usefull. Rebooting the server does not help. Mcafee 8.5 is installed, but i stopped all services. Does not help. What can i do ?

Is Hyper-V too complicated for the following.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 10 replies
I want to upgrade to W2008 down the track but in the meantime I want a backup box for my 4YO IBM X206 running W2003. (I cannot get another X206) I was thinking of Installing W2008 with Hyper-V on a new box, and have an area (whatever it's called) set aside so I can use it as an emergency backup for my current W2003. Or is Hyper-V too sophisticated (and too great a learning curve) for this scenario and a simpler product exists. -- Regards Tom

Scheduled backups fail to start
by Guest Frances Butcher- 10 replies
We have been using Win Backup on Win Svr 2003 for at least 18months now and suddenly it is refusing to work. If I run a manual backup it backs up no problem. However the scheduled backups do not start. No log is generated in the backup GUI and the very few messages which appear in the event viewer do not seem applicable. I have rebooted the server and also deleted and recreated all the scheduled tasks and media but it has made no difference. - The only clue I have is that if I select properties on any of the tasks then the following error appears: >General page initialization failed. The specific error is: 0x80090016:keyset does not exist. An error has o…

KB948496, 2003 x64 server stops net functions
by Guest Thomas T- 10 replies

A 2003 x64 server provides since last patch tuesday no net functionality anymore. Error: All services run No entries in the event log Ping to the server goes No RDP No "Net View" .... KB948496 patch has been installed. After uninstalling the patch everything was fine again. This patch probably at least for some x64 machines is not recommended. In my case this is a HP385 G2, AMD64

Disk requirements of next version of Windows Server
by Guest Tom Del Rosso- 10 replies

Any idea how big the next version of Windows Server is going to be, so newly installed boot partitions can accommodate an upgrade later? (I'm thinking about a partition without a pagefile.) -- Reply in group, but if emailing add another zero, and remove the last word.

Getting a list of users in global and local groups.
by Guest Joe- 10 replies

I found this batch file on a newsgroup a while back, I'm trying to get a text file that shows all the users I have in my domain groups. It keeps on giving me a message of something like "group not found" (I'm not near a dc to give the exact error) I noted the line numbers in this string. Any ideas how to make this work ? Line 1@echo off Line 2 if exist c:\Groups.txt del c:\Groups.txt Line 3 for /F "tokens=*" %%* in ('net localgroup ^| find "*"') do call :Sub %%* Line 4 for /F "tokens=*" %%* in ('net groups /domain ^| find "*"') do call :Sub %%* Line 5 goto :eof Line 6 :sub Line 7 set name=%* Line 8 net group "%name:~1%" | find /i /v "comment" | fin…

Remove Server from Domain and Rejoin, Implications?
by Guest Karl Burrows- 10 replies
I have been advised by Citrix in order to repair an installation of their Presentation Server to remove this server from the domain and rejoin it to clear an error I am having with this installation. This is not the DC, but it is our primary file and print server. What are the implications of removing this server? Will I lose shares, user permissions, mapped network drives, etc? If not, is there a preferred way of doing this with the least loss of network settings? Thanks!

Installing RIS on Windows Sever 2003
by Guest justin2312@gmail.com- 10 replies
- 669 views
I've read a few how-to docs on installing Remote Installation Service (RIS) on Windows Server 2003; they all seem to say go to Add/Remove Programs> Windows Components and select "Remote Installation Service". I looked on my server, however, and the option isn't listed there at all. I'm sure the server is Windows Server 2003 SP1, is there any reason why the feature would be absent?

What is wrong with this syntax?
by Guest Wowbagger- 10 replies

Executing this script on a 2003 server results in an error claiming that the syntax is incorrect. What am I missing here? This script works perfectly on an XP machine. -- script begins -- c: cd "c:\shared\RE Photos" if not exist thumbs.db GOTO main attrib -s -h thumbs.db del thumbs.db :main if not exist #Numbered GOTO error_missing_dir if exist 0*.* move 0*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 1*.* move 1*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 2*.* move 2*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 3*.* move 3*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 4*.* move 4*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 5*.* move 5*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 6*.* move 6*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 7*.* move 7*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 8*.* m…

Catastrophic Corruption of Dynamic Disks
by Guest Will- 10 replies
I had a really disappointing event take place today with a critical system that runs Windows 2003 32-bit. Effectively *all* of the dynamic disk structures were corrupted, even though we were not working on them at the time of the reboot. Upon reboot the system gives some brief message about the disk being corrupt, and the Windows 2003 boot sequence never starts. Looking at all of the drives inside the Disk Management utility in Microsoft's ERD Commander Boot CD, the Dynamic volumes show in the state "Offline". A Google search seems to suggest that Dynamic volumes in an offline state normally means the Dynamic volume information is corrupt and ca…

Windows server 2003 randomly failing
by Guest dDan- 10 replies
I've scoured the web for information on this but with no errors reported in the event viewer I'm finding it a little difficult to know where to start. Basically, our Windows Server 2003 server seems to randomly stop responding correctly. By this, I mean users cant log on to the domain, access any shares etc. The server itself doesn't actually hang, in that I can still navigate around Windows, however it does appear to be very unresponsive (for example, if i click START, it might take 5 minutes or so to show up). The server and all clients also fail when updating group policy. Restarting the server fixes everything, but then it happens again a seemi…

FRS Service Doesn't Start
by Guest Kent Tylman- 10 replies

Hello, I have a Windows 2003 DC on which the FRS won't start. I just get a generic message saying that it didn't respond in a timely manner. I just installed SP 2 hoping that might help but it didn't. Can you point me to some troubleshooting steps? I found articles on troubleshooting FRS but they aren't much help if the service just won't start. Thanks. -- Kent

MMC cannot open the file C:\....\file_name.msc
by Guest David- 10 replies
Win2003SBS SP2 This has just to appear after the possibly coincidental uninstallation of Panda Business Secure Exchange. Start -> Run -> anything.msc and MMC cannot open the file ... This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient rights to the file. From the command prompt mmc.exe browse to a .msc same error.. Any assistance gratefully received. -- David @ Solsletta

Domain Controller Certificates
by Guest Adrian Marsh (NNTP)- 10 replies

Hi All, Posting in both SBS and general server as this applies to both. I've a transition-packed SBS 2003 server, and I need to understand the different types of certificates involved in Domain usage. For example, yesterday I setup a linux server that makes LDAPS requests to our SBS server for authentication, all worked fine. Today its failing, and when I examined the LDAPS traffic I can see it believes the certificate has expired. Checking the certificate identified, I find it actually has, on the 7 Aug 08. The certificate in question is based on the Domain Controller (DomainController) template in the SBS CA. Theres a three of those certificat…

Disappearing hard drive space on 2k3 DC
by Guest DonnaJ@abbe-lib.org- 10 replies
I've got a Domain Controller that is low on space. The thing is, I just freed up 25 GB on hard drive space on it a couple of weeks ago (relocated the software storage folder). I did this because it was low on space and running poorly because of it. And now this server is running so slow that I have to reboot it several time a day and it only has 3.38 GB's of free space. How do I figure out what is filling up the hard drive? We use DFS replication. This DC holds the Schema Master Role. I'm sure you will need more info in order to be of help; I just don't know what to posted. Just ask. Thanks, DJ

Cant install any software from a netwwork drive.
by Guest Wajahat Khan- 10 replies

I have a windows server 2003 R3 SP2 domain setup with all workstations running the same OS and SP level. I cant install software on any of the workstations when mapped to a network drive. I am logged in as the domain admin and as such would think that I would be able to install software on the workstation. If I copy the files locally then I can perform the software install. Is there a new policy in winsvr2k3SP2 tha prevents running executables from a remote netwrok drive? Thanks

DHCP
by Guest Bob- 10 replies

I am new to Windows Server 2003 and have Static Addresses set up on all of my servers. I have 3 DNS servers running Windows 2000 Server. The rest are all running Windows Server 2003 with Exchange or other various applications. I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding DHCP Client. I believe that I can disable DHCP client on all servers where I am running Static IP addresses, however can not find any information that confirms that as fact. I am getting errors on all of these machines that might indicate a corrupt database however, since these mahines in question are not my DHCP server, and there is no databse in the directory, then I jus…

I have a test comptuer. So this is not a productions machine. I have been testing converting from dynamic back to basic disks. I was testing a program called ptedit that several have had success with in doing this. I made the required changed to the hard drive and then rebooted the system. The server reboots fine, but after I log in it imedietly logs me out. There is no time to do anything. I cannot connect to it over the network. I try to reboot vi cd and run the program to put the drive back to the way it was but cannt do this. It seems it cant find the usb drive that had the program on it. My reading tells me that the reason its doing this is becasue it …

Hi! All, I have a situation here. I wanted to install the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition on a DELL Optiplex 755 with an 80 GB SATA drive. A couple of minutes into the installation I get the blue screen " 0X0000007B(0XF789E63C,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000) asking me to "chkdsk" the hard drive. After searching the Internet I get to know that Win Server 2003 doesnt provide the SATA drivers. I checked with DELL and they say they cannot help as I am changing the default O.S of Optiplex. the Intel chipset is "Intel NH82801 I0" and I dont find the chipset on the Intel website. Nor could I find the drivers elsewhere. I am missing something her…
