32-bit server, mixed 32/64-bit clients?
by Guest Hurricane Andrew- 0 replies

What are the issues that I should anticipate in such a setup? Specifically, I'd like to tread slowly in the move to 64-bit. I have a simple home network setup: 1 Longhorn 32-bit standard server 1 dual boot Vista/XP client 32-bit (main PC, Vista default OS) 1 dual boot XP/Vista client 32-bit (kids PC, XP default OS) All are on a single domain. Both clients are capable of 64-bit. The server is as well, but I'd like to hammer out any 64-bit issues, quirks, etc. on a client before messing with the server, plus most of my kids' games and such aren't ready for the 64-bit plunge, so their PC will be stuck on 32-bit XP Pro for the foreseeable future. …

I see we can buy Standard OR Enterprise versions. In each version can we choose to install as a 32bit or 64bit installation? In other words both Standard and Enterprise versions contain BOTH 32bit and 64bit installations?

32bit Apps high CPU x64 W2008

Issue: Generally performance ok on x64, all drivers up to date as are patches. When running 32bit applications such as IE or even mpsreports the cpu utilisation jumps to almost 50% making everything very poor. This obviously has issues for a lot of applications. Any thoughts? Thanks TC

32bit clients can't add printer from 64bit 2003 Server
by Guest JuanPineyro- 1 reply

Orinally posted by JuanPineyro: Ok, I know this seems very elemental but it is kicking my butt. I have a 64bit Server 2003 and I use it mostly for file/print sharing all of a sudden I am having problems with some users on Windows XP 32bit clients complaining they can't connect to their printers. When i get there I try to add the network printer but it tells me the driver is not compatible. I then go to the 64bit server and try to add 32 bit driver support but it will not allow me. Any ideas? Thanks, Juan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JP

32bit processor and 4 gig limit
by Guest FF- 4 replies

Anyone know if you have 2-4 processors if you can exceed the 4gig RAM limit? What I'm wondering is, does the limit apply per processor. We're looking to possibly setup some VMWare on a server with 4 processors and 4 gig of RAM. We're wondering if it would make sense to toss in 8 gig of RAM before we buy more windows licenses. Thanks!

32GB RAM in Windows server 2003
by Guest ghillard- 3 replies

I have a Windows 2003 server (HP DL360 G5) which I have upgraded from Standard Edition to Enterprise R2. I have installed 32GB RAM in the server but Windows only recognizes 3.25GB. The Bios on the server recognizes all 32GB. I have added the /PAE switch to the boot.ini file but still Windows only sees 3.25 GB. Have I missed something? Thank you in advance for your help. Greg

3rd Request: ASR Backup Question
by Guest Bob Felton- 2 replies
Original Posting: 6/12/2007 2nd Request Posting: 6/25/07 Is it possible to exclude one or more folders (non-system use folders) of the system drive (c:) during an ASR backup? There is nothing in the GUI to allow doing this. Is there by chance a registry hack to allow it? Thanks. Additional with 2nd request posting: Or, is there some way to generate the ASR diskette without doing an actual ASR backup? Platform: Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. Thanks. -- Bob Felton

Hi there. A year ago or so we built this monster server for files with a RAID-5 array it has just about 3TB of disk in it total. I just noticed today in Disk Management that we actually only partitioned 2048GB of it (I guess the limit for a single filesystem?) and that there is almost a 900GB 'unallocated space' block sitting there unused. Windows will not allow me to create an additional partition in that 900GB space. Any advice? -Drew

58 seconds delay before next fax can be received
by Guest wildeskraut@googlemail.com- 0 replies

OS: Win 2003 Faxboard: Diva Analog-4 (4 ports) If I receive a fax it takes almost a whole minute (58 seconds) before I can receive the next fax, the line does not pick up calls during that time. If I start a CAPI application the line is always free if no fax is being received. My configuration does not allow any outgoing faxes on that two involved lines, so this can not be a reason for this problem. Is there such a built in delay in Microsoft fax? Thank you for your time Oliver

60 XP machines to join the server, some questions.
by Guest FFMG- 5 replies

Hi, I am 'managing' a school computer network with 60 computers dotted all over the place, (I use the term managing loosely). We have 30 computers in the computer lab for the students and 30 computers in various classrooms/offices. All the machines are currently Windows XP pro, (we got 60 licenses from Microsoft rather than a single volume license). A technician is coming to install a server, (new machine and MS Server 2003), I am not sure about the version yet but I know it is at least Windows 2003. I am guessing that the technician will do some of the basic work but I would also like to learn how to do some basic things myself. Also as we are on a budg…

60-70 Printers going offline last two nights
by Guest Sandy Wood- 6 replies
Our main print server, Windows 2003 R2, SP2, hosts about 130 printers. HP LaserJets, Xerox Document Centers. The last two nights I've seen over 60 of the printers sitting Offline. I can't manually put them online, I have to stop and start the Spooler service to bring them back. This happens to a variety of printers, it's not specific to a certain driver. I've got nothing in my App or Sys logs that gives me any clues. Are there any other diagnostic tools to dig a bit deeper into this? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

64 bit print server...
by Guest John Whites- 1 reply

has anyone ever set up a 64 bit print server? I wanted to make my windows server 2003 x64 r2 into a print server but it seems to be a bad idea because I can't get anything to work properly... Not all printers have x64 drivers, so what do you do? Try to use the x86? Doesn't work. Try to use just generic and then specific the x86 drivers? Doesn't work....always says they're not the right drivers.... Guess i'll just reinstall with 32 bit.

64 bit vs 32 bit file systems
by Guest wlhj@news.postalias- 1 reply

I am a sys admin for a small local gov. entitity. We are considering upgrading our Exchange Server from the 2003 version to the 2007 version. We will have to upgrde the server to Windows 2003 64 bit. Presently for backups we copy the files to another Windows 2003 server (32 bit) and then to removeable hard drives, which we rotate. My question is this. Will we still be able to do a copy of these files from the 64 bit version of Windows Server 2003 to the 32 bit version or will there be some compatability issues?

64-bit for VM's?
by Guest soup_or_power@yahoo.com- 2 replies

We are going to host 3 VM's on a 64GB server. The host OS is going to be some version of Windows. Does it have to be a 64-bit OS like Win2k3? Also: if 64-bit Win2k3 is used as host, do the VM's have to be 64-bit OS as well? Is the RAM going to be partitioned into 2 GB for each VM? Thanks for your help.

64bit Print server 32 bit Clients

Hi there was wondering if anyone could help me I have a 64bit server running Windows 2003 R2 but all my client workstations are 32bit. After i recieved two Knonica C550 printer/copiers I began installing them on the print server. I of course had to install them on the server with 64 bit drivers that the workstations can not use. I remember that I had some trouble getting the 32 bit driver to install under the "additional drivers" section of the printer, but I did get them to install and everything seemed fine. Now however I realize that I can change the default setting for the printer. I change them on the server in the usual way, but this change isn'…

75 GB limit in Windows Server 2003 R2
by Guest Harold Naparst- 15 replies

What is the meaning of the 75 GB storage limit in Windows Server 2003 R2? Does that mean that the sum of the whole company's mail in Exchange, files, etc cannot exceed 75 GB? Seems absurd. An average user has about 5 GB of mail, so this would mean that if the company exceeds 15 people, we can't use this product or would need to buy more servers. Harold

I have to replace Disk 0 of a software mirrored pair as it has a bad block. The mirror is up showing Healthy (At Risk). Disk 0 is "Online (Error)". Disk 1 is "Online". There are volumes C: and D: in the mirror. Volume C: will not reactivate past 7%. Server still boots without problem from Disk 0. My problem is that if I attempt to boot using Disk1, it starts off promisingly enough showing the Windows Server 2003 startup screen, but then stops with a 7B stop error: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" etc. etc... I have built a new Windows 2003 IAS server and configured Wireless Authentication (802.1X). I followed the TechNet documentation "Securing Wireless LANs with Certificate Services". I have a test laptop which has a Wireless Group Policy applied, I confirmed the wireless policy settings are applied to the laptop, the user and computer certificates were enrolled and installed. A Linksys WRT300N has been configured as the Wireless Access Point and has the relevent Radius server settings applied. The problem is that the laptop attempts to connect to the Access Point, it connects and then within seconds it disconnects, it attempts a reconnect several t…

Hi, Running dfs on a Win2003 box, with trend micro AV. The system process is constantly at 99%, meaning the server is ruunning extremely slow. Is this because of the AV or is it a known problem. Btw, this is one dfs server which is one of 5 on the network, with replication traffic between them. Thanks for any advice,
