Problems to add PCs to domain
by Guest Walter P.- 14 replies

Hi all, I have a Win 2003 Server, with about 50 PCs (XP Pro SP2) into the domain. My problem is when I try to add a couple of PCs to the domain. I normally add them thru My Computer - Computer Name - Change - Member Of... reboot. There, there is no problem, but when a user logs in, with his domain user, you can see that the GPOs are not applied, and that the PC cannot "see" the domain (for instance, to assign rights to domain users) Nevertheless, the PC appears in the Computers OU and its full name includes the domain... I have tried to re-add the PC several times, deleting the PC account from the AD, but it is the same. Any ideas? Thanks! W.

Windows 2008 Remote desktop instances
by Guest MarcusB- 7 replies

In all windows 2003 servers we have possibility to use two parallel remote desktop connection plus one console connection. (mstsc /v:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX /console) On all our new Windows 2008 Enterprise servers we can only have one remote desktop connection, and it seems that it is the same as console connection. Should we activate some services to have the same possibilities in windows 2008? Regards MarcusB

Windows 2003 partition setup
by Guest Myron Oakley- 9 replies

I have installed Windows 2003 server on a new Dell 2900. This machine has a raid 5 config of 500 gig. I took the default c: partition size of 12 gig when I installed. This machine will be run Terminal server and also act as a file server. I have now realize with Program Files and Document and Settings folders on this partition we'll have immediate problem. I'm either going to have to resize the C: partition *or* reconfigure the system with these folders on a new drive. There isn't a lot of information on this subject available. How are the real world admins doing this? My gut reaction is to simply divide the array right in two 250 gig volumes, …

Hi Question about server en workstations defragmentation Is there a way to centrally manage disc defrag in a small network with one SBS 2003 server, AD -DC configured and 10 XP SP2 Workstations ? my workaround is to set a scheduling on each workstation to run "defrag.exe c: -f" wich is not the best practice. with this workaround i'm unable to create an overview of each workstationhealthstatus. Can i install a tool that enables me to manage disc cleanup- defrag and disccheck from the active directory for example and give me statusreport ? Thank you in advance Best regards Maxime

simple networking question
by Guest pete0085- 14 replies

Hopefully this isn't a "dumb" question. I'm setting up a lab at home to work on my 291 exam. I am running server 2003 on virtual pc installed on two different pcs. I need the two to be able to communicate. I attempted to use my liksys router and had them both hooked up to the router, using the same gateway. They were not able to communicate (ping). I don't believe its necessary to get out to the internet. Would I need to use a hub instead and plug them both into a small hub? Sorry if this is too easy of a question. Neither of the virtual pcs are set up as a DC.

Folder redirection
by Guest justmark- 9 replies

Okay, I'm just trying to get a handle on this... We have Folder Redirection set up with a GPO, using \\%HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH% to redirect our users' My Documents to a network share area. We also have Offline Files configured to synchronize their files. From what I can see (and maybe this is by design), it appears that opening a document in My Documents is actually opening it live from the server rather than locally? In addition My Documents Properties states that the target folder location is \\server\etc. rather than a local folder. I guess I don't understand what's happening here. I'd assume that you'd want My Documents to be an actual local folde…

Hi All… I am running a production Windows Server 2003 SP2 on C:\ with Exchange 2003 installed on E:\ when the E:\ drive was full in the morning and has 0 bytes free space! I tried to free and delete or move some files but they appear shortly after I do that again and no changes in the size appeared. After restarting the sever, I start to get this error: E:\ is not accessible. There is not enough space on the disk. Also the Exchange services and some other service couldn’t start. This drive E:\ has all the Information Store and the files!!! Any idea how to resolve this? Thanks -- Aws awsok@yahoo.com

Printer deployment best practices
by Guest Nuno Santos- 1 reply

Hello. I Have installed a new server 2008 as a Primary domain controller. The rest of the servers are 2003 server and all the clients are windows XP professional. I'm trying to deploy printers to the users with group policy. Each user will have only the printers that are defined in the policy. What is the best way to perform this? 1-Install the printer in this PDC, go to print management and deploy the printer to the correspondent policy? 2-Directly create a rule in the policy "user configuration-->preferences-->Printer" Both options are not working very well. With the second option i can install some printers, others are not installed. I…

Unable to logon to a Windows Server 2003 system.
by Guest Edson da Silva- 7 replies

Hello guys I have a problem with a server in one of our remote sites. We normally connect to this server using VNC. for the last two weeks we are unable to log on into it, basically what's happening is that when you type your credentials (Username/Password) the system attempts to log you on but instead of loading the desktop, it takes you back to "press contrl Alt and Delete" window. All network shares can be accessed without any problems, is just the fact that we are unable to log on to the server that is presenting an issue. I have also tried Remote Desktop and reboot the machine but didn't work either. I there any way to solve this problem remotely (…

DEP error for IIS Worker Process
by Guest aja44- 10 replies

I rebooted my server running 2003 and Exchange 2003 and began receiving a DEP pop error for the IIS Worker Process. No matter how many times I cancelled it, the pop would return as soon as I clicked on "do not send" to Microsoft. I finally had to go into System Properties > Advanced > DEP tab and choose to exclude the IIS Worker Process. Can someone tell me what this error is about? Thanks

MS - Excel
by Guest Dave- 9 replies

I have a small network, an SBS server running AD, and a file server running Windows 2003 server. Everything has been fine. I know have several users running Vista, and Vista Ultimate. Those now running Vista cannot access excel sheets located on the file server. The permissions are set as they were with XP. Some of the users even created the excel sheets and have full rights to the file and folder. They can open other various files, autocad, pdf's but not the excel files. Their office programs have been registered with MS. They are using Office 2007. -- Dave

Windows 2008 Server Performance Counters missing
by Guest John Meng- 7 replies

Hi, I have 2 Windows 2008 Servers Ent where some of the core Perfmon counters have gone "missing". Plenty of other counters are there (.NET, Exch2007, etc). But some of the main ones like Processor and PhysicalDisk are not listed anymore. And if you try and enable them via DOS, I get a msg stating they are already enabled. I have tried using Windows 2003 directions regarding repairing corrupt Performance Counters (kb 300956) - but no luck. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Extend Partition
by Guest John- 5 replies

Hello all: Here's the deal. We got a new server with Windows 2003 x64 Standard. It has only 12GB for the OS partition w/only 4 left. We have 200+GB of unallocated space that I would like to extend this partition onto (at least 8 more GBs). I know this can be done with diskpart but since this is the system partition, needs to be done from the command line (i.e. boot into DOS). However, to do so requires a boot disk with the proper RAID drivers (this is a Dell PowerEdge with a PERC 5/i). We do not have a floppy and I have tried creating a boot CD with the drivers slipstreamed, but that failed. My next resort was to use the Windows Automated I…
