by Guest Drew Govnyak- 5 replies

I have a windows 2003 R2 domain environment in native mode. One of my users has a windows xp workstation and a mac laptop running Leopard. I have a shared folder on the server where all domain users have Full Shared and Modify NTFS permissions. When a user logs on to his XP workstations he does not have any problems creating new files in the shared public folder on the server, but when he accesses the same share using his MAC (types smb://server_ip/share) he gets prompted for his domain user name and password. After he authenticates, he can open/read any of the files in the share, but as soon as tries to save/copy any file over 10kb he getts an error on …

When a user logs through thin client to the server, gets message: your desktop is currently blank! Please notify your administrator. I created the same user under different name and can login fine on the same machine. But I need to have his old account fixed because of all his emails and other stuff. I renamed the old profile and logoff and log back but still get the same error message. I would appreciate any help

NTFS vs Share permisions
by Guest Louis- 4 replies

Hi, I have this dilema with share and NTFS permission... I am trying to restrict a share with just read permissions and then control write persmisions to the folders inside the share using NTFS permissions. But it seams read takes precedence over write. Conversly, if I give the share read/write permissions and NTFS read to the folders same thins happens. Any suggestion on how to circumvent this?

about Hyper-V
by Guest Synapse Syndrome- 2 replies

When using Hyper-V, is it right that the 'host' Windows 2008 OS has no more direct access to the hardware as any of the 'guest' OSs, as they all go through the HyperVisor? In that case, there is not chance of using other PCIe cards, even with the main 'host', as it were? Or does Hyper-V allow this someway? I'll have to experiment, but some experienced input would be appreciated. ss.

I posted this question some time back and it was never resolved. I trying to move my DHCP service from a W2K server to a W2K3 server. Here are the dteps I have done in order; 1. net stop dhcpserver (on W2K) 2. jetpack dhcp.mdb temp.mdb (on W2K) 3. Dhcpexim.exe (export configuration to c:\dhcpdatabase.txt and disable selected scope on local machine) (on W2K) 4. Disable dhcp service (on W2K) 5. copy dhcpdatabase.txt from W2K to W2K3 6. netsh dhcp server import c:\dhcpdatabase.txt all This is where I get an error. The error is; Error while importing option "5." This option conflicts with the existing option"" Is there any way of modifying the text f…

Imaging Boot Partition
by Guest mcp6453- 4 replies

Today I tried to use BootIt NG 1.83b to create an image of the boot partition of a Windows 2003 Server. The server has a hardware RAID. BING was able to see the boot partition and the USB drive with no problem. After I selected the boot partition (Image) and then pasted it to the USB drive (Paste), nothing happened. BING works with this hardware setup normally because I previously successfully used it to resize the boot partition. My objective is to create an image that can be used to restore the operating system in the event of a catastrophic failure. Other than BING, what software will work? Acronis? Whatever it is, it needs to work from DOS so that I ca…

All, I have a server that uses an automatic login at startup. We are having a problem when the server starts the auto login can not login because it is prompting us for a reason for an unexpected reboot. Is there a way to disable this prompt for a reason? I know this is not an ideal way to handle it, but this is what the customer wants. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Craig

DFS Upgrade
by Guest Mike- 2 replies

Hello guys, I have the following problem: 2 Windows 2003 Domain Controllers(to keep it simple DC 1 and DC 2). Each DC is a DFS server with replication between. Because replication was very slow, we decided to upgrade both DC's to Windows 2003 R2, so we could use DFRs instead of FRs. DC 1: Windows Server 2003 -> in place upgrade to Windows Server 2003 R2. DC 2: Windows Server 2003 OEM -> we installed a new domain controller DC 3 with Windows Server 2003 R2 and removed DC 2. So current environment: DC 1: Windows Server 2003 R2 DC 3: Windows Server 2003 R2 (both SP2) We installed DFS on DC 1 and DC 3. Everything went fine until we started to …

Re: Print Management on Server 2003 R2

Re: Print Management on Server 2003 R2 Hi I am currently implementing Print Management on a server running Server 2003 R2 with Windows XP SP2 clients and was wondering about the following: I have added our printers to different group policies and they are installed when the users log on to their notebooks. What will happen if I change the share name for a printer or the printer name? Will the "pushprinterconnections.exe" push the changes at the next login or do I first remove the printer from the GPO so it's uninstalled from the client computer and then add the printer with the new settings? /Lasse

I am using Win2K3 R2 SP2 with Symantec Backup Exec 12 with Continuous Protection that utilises VSS. Every once in a while, I get these errors in my event log along with a mass deletion of nearly all my snapshots on the volume - maybe a dozen or so: Event ID 10 Volume Shadow Copy Service information: The COM Server with CLSID {65ee1dba-8ff4-4a58-ac1c-3470ee2f376a} and name SW_PROV cannot be started. Most likely the CPU is under heavy load. Win2k3 SP2 - MSI Installer
by Guest Nomad- 1 reply

Hey Everyone I have a problem on our Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 Terminal Server box where the MSI Installer (when installing / uninstalling an app) pauses for between 20-45 minutes (while using 100% of a single core, this box is a Dual Socket Dual Core Xeon 3.4ghz). After this delay the system eventually continues on with the install / uninstall and completes it successfully. However, just as the installer pauses it logs the following in the event log. ----- Detection of product '{0D20B6A8-2B82-4376-9876-C3A289C80590}', feature 'AlwaysInstall', component '{5CC2D105-DDDD-4EC4-8B74-750194E57B99}' failed. User Security Inheritance in Active Directory
by Guest Drew Govnyak- 5 replies
I have over 1000 users in Active Directory on a Windows 2003 in native AD mode. Some users were brought in to AD from NT 4.0 with Exchange 5.5 by the means of the AD connector. If I look at the security tab of the imported users, and click the Advanced button, the inheritance of the permissions from the parent is not checked, but any user that was copied or created from scratch in 2003 AD has the checkbox checked. Is there a utility I can run that would give me a report on who has the inheritance enabled and who does not. Ideally I would want to have the inheritance checkbox checked for all of the users in AD. Not sure if there is anything in Windows…

SBS 2003 License service is denying connections
by Guest Jeff Morgan- 1 reply

I have a SBS 2003 server that has the intial 5 user license. We are running exchange. I have 5 workstations in the office. When all five machines are on and using a share, the 5th one is being denied connection to the server. If I disable the licensing service, the 5th person can get on without any issues. I have searched online and have found a few things, but they don't apply to SBS 2003 running exchange. I shouldn't have to purchase additional licenses to be able to use my 5th machine. The license service restarts itself after 30 minutes, so disabling that is not a long term solution. How do I get this to count correctly and not have to buy …

W2K3: Volume Shadow Copy Slow Client
by Guest Dvord Direwood- 3 replies

I have two file servers which are both running Volume Shadow Copy. One is W2k3 Std and the other is W2k3 Storage. If I bring up the Previous Versions tab on a properties window on my XP client, the W2k3 Std shares come right up, showing me previous backups. The W2k3 Storage one takes nearly 10 minutes to display. Sometimes explorer even crashes on the client. Here are some of the particulars: W2k3 Std SP2 Shadow Copy on D:, 69 shares, 2621 MB out of 54723 MB, Schedule is 10 AM and 2 PM M-F. Shadow copies only exist from 5/5/08 to today (5 currently). W2k3 Storage Shadow Copy on E:, 2 shares, 32236 MB out of 67904 MB, Schedule is 9 AM and 3 PM M…

How to check the box "Show icon in notification area when connected" in NIC properties using Netsh?

How to check the box "Show icon in notification area when connected" in NIC properties using Netsh? Gurus, Previously on this newsgroup I had asked if there was a Netsh script by which I could set the parameters of my local NIC. There was. One must use the "netsh interface ip set address" syntax. Now, is there any way one can tell netsh to check the box "Show icon in notification area when connected"? A BIG bonus to anyone who comes up with this answer! -- Spin
