by Guest Ryan Newington- 6 replies

Hi, We have installed WDS on several Windows Server 2008 machines, and each instance has the same fault. When booting a PXE client, the PXE boot fails with a TFTP: Access Violation error. Further testing by running TFTP manually from a command line returns the same result. C:\Users\Administrator>tftp -i 192.168.0.222 GET /boot/x86/pxeboot.com Error on server : Access violation. turning on advanced logging reveals the following information in the \windows\tracing log folder [4064] 12:02:08: [uDPPorts] Allocated dynamic port 64401. Hello, This one is driving me completely insane. 1 domain\site I have a 2008 x64 SP1 server running as a Hyper-V host - the host also hosts all the user\corp data shares the 2 DCs are 2008 x64, no 2003 DCs Fresh install of XP SP3 on a physical machine (not a VM), fully updated - (this behavior also is replicated on a XP SP3 VM) heres the situation: from my vista sp1 client I can browse the root \\server & all shares \\server\shares whether logged in as a user, or a domain admin from the xp box i cannot do either above, even using \\ip-address\ - I get this error: "the network name is no longer available" i went as far to install wins i…

I have a Server 2003 SP2 file server that has worked flawlessly for months on end. This morning I attempted to install the IIS components from the "add / remove windows component" interface, it asked for the standard the 'IIS_iis_switch.bat' file on Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition CDRom under i386 folder. Huh? I have searched high and low but have been unable to locate this file anywhere. So, my actual question is: Does this file really exist? Has anyone ever seen this file? Did I do something to deserve this trouble, or is this simply a problem with the sequence of installation events? I have looked everywhere, and tried everything I can thin…

Installing IIS on a domain controller?
by Guest pez- 1 reply

I know best practices state you should avoid installing IIS on a DC if at all possible. We just purchase Symantec Endpoint protection. Originally I planned on installing the management console on my XP Pro PC, but have run into the problem that XP only supports 10 concurrent connections. I would like to install the console on one of my DCs (because these are my only servers that have enough RAM to support this application). The problem is in order for the console to work it requires IIS. I understand the one of the reasons you don't want IIS installed on a DC is because of the security concerns. But if I am the only person accessing the management website is…

User Network Drive establish but content is not the good one

Hello We have an AD domain under Windows 2003 Server and clients under Windows XP SP2. On each profiles on AD, in the Profile tab, we have set to connect a mapped drive on u: at \\SRV2003\Users$\User_Name. And sometimes for a few users, the network drive is created but at \\SRV2003\Users$\ (instead of \\SRV2003\Users$\User_Name) so they can see all other directory name and fortunately can open only their own directory. My question is how can I solve this problem ? Thank You

volsnap errors
by Guest David Knight- 2 replies

Please Please Please someone help me. I am having no end of problems with Symantec Continuous Protection deleting snapshots when it shouldnt. I have been told by Symantec several times now that its not their issue and I should speak to Microsoft at a further cost to my company. Bearing in mind the max limit for shadow copies is 64 and I have 13 currently showing in both CPS and vssadmin. I get this error 'The oldest shadow copy of volume R: was deleted to keep the total number of shadow copies of volume R: below a limit.' I have searched for this error and cannot find anything. Can anyone help? David Knight

Redundant Server at Lower Spec
by Guest Jim- 3 replies
We are deploying a server setup: two live servers and one redundant server for complete redundancy. Both are Windows 2003 SP2. Both are going to be quite high spec, eg, HP DL380 Proliant 3.0 GHz dual or quad core, 4gb ram etc. What we do is switch the hard drives from the live to the redundant server if there is a hardware problem. Not a particular cost effective method but it is bolt and braces. What I am thinking is that I will buy a lower spec DL380 for the redundant server. Instead of a 3.0 GHz, I will buy a 2.0 GHz server. Question is: will the OS accept this should I switch the hard drives? I know all is good when switching on the same spec, I nee…

Autoenroll client sets in frequently
by Guest Vineet- 0 replies

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this query, if not please tell me which one is? I have configured to issue device certificates to a client machine. The CA server is running on Windows 2003. I have set the group policy such that it checks every time for a valid certificate on the client, and if there isn't any, it sets off the auto enroll. Now I see that the auto enroll client is set off very frequently although previous client device certificate enrollment has gone off fine. What can be the problem? Is the certificate not being installed on the client systems properly? How do i determine the issue? Thanks

File Server Migration
by Guest Arsenal2003- 7 replies

We want to migrate our old file server to a new server running 2003 R2. The main objective is to keep all mapped drives/printers and UNC paths the same as the old path from the client perspective. All the current mappings have been made manually not via a login script. I tested the File Server Migration Toolkit in a lab. While the data and permissions migrated flawlessly, sometimes the mapped drives did not resolve on the client side. Do we have to use DFS to accomplish the above objectives? Has anyone else had a similar scenario? Too eventually I will have another server to perform the same task on. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Windows update changed to Microsoft update & only automatic
by Guest wileyfox- 0 replies

I can no longer scan for updates on 2 pc's unless automatic update is on. Also all pc's have changed from windows update to microsoft update. I really do not want to go to Microsoft update. When I use microsoft update, it attempts to patch Office 2003 sp3 with the sp3 patch and then errors out when it can't do it. Please let me know how to change back to windows update from Microsoft update. Also, I need to be able to do manual downloads again. I need some control over what gets loaded on systems.

Last steps in Migration from NT4 to server 2003
by Guest Brian K- 0 replies

I've migrated most of my users over to server 2003 using ADMT and a trust between the 2 domains. I have 3 member servers to the old domain that run Great Plains and various other applications. What are the steps to ensure everything still works after I shut down the old domain. Here is what I was planning. Remove the 2 way trust between domains Join the old application server to the new domain. shutdown the old NT4.0 domain controller. I was told something about removing Sid history but not sure. Does anyone have the steps involved for a sucessful cutover. Thanks, Brian

Task Scheduler Security?

Have a few Internet facing servers with half a dozen or more scheduled tasks each which to date have been run under the context of the Local System account. Was reading the following article; http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/f60ea8d6-d2af-4dd0-b050-c09951826f5d1033.mspx?mfr=true This article says that you need to be very cautious about running tasks using the Local System account due to the "Act as part of the operating system" permission. I read the linked article that was meant to explain this further, but I'm still left wondering how someone might be able to use this. Can anyone explain in layman terms what the risks of running S…

Volume Shadow Copy API and Disk Management Console
by Guest cwinkler95602- 0 replies

If I use the C++ Volume Shadow Copy API to create a shadow copy, that shadow copy does not show up when using the Disk Management Console (viewing the volume properties). If I use the example program "vshadow", same thing, but if I use vssadmin, the shadow copy WILL show up in Disk Management Console. Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? -- cwinkler

WEB based remote AD user manager - in windows?
by Guest Radioman- 0 replies
Hi all, As title, I am looking for an inexpensive preferably WEB based Active Directory user manager. I expect (in the usual fashion) one is buried in Windows somewhere (as are lots of useful things..) I have setup IAS using AD to run as a Radius server; my users are the wireless MACs from a number of access points, and I want to allow techs limited access to my AD on a W2K3 server to edit, add or delete only the wireless MACs group. I don't want a tech to delete my ADMIN account for example (even though I did that once myself, but there is a KB article on how to get back in if you are local to the server ;-)) So - I can find a number of solution…

Override Default Domain Policy - how??
by Guest Okramo- 9 replies

Hi, I've created OU "Testers". Opened "Testers" properties and at Group Policy menu created Group Policy Object linked to OU "Testers". There at GP Object I've changed setting required password complexity and disabled it. Also I've blocked Policy Inheritance to disable applying Default Domain Policy to my OU "Testers", cause there in Default Domain Policy I have password complexity configured which I don't want to assign to OU "Testers". My problem is that when I want to create user in OU "Testers" it always warns me to use complex password, which is configured at default domain policy. I can't create user with simple password what I was planning to ac…

User accounts getting locked out frequently
by Guest Tom Edelbrok- 2 replies

To all, We have a Server 2003 network (2 Domain Controllers, 3 member servers, and about 60 Windows XP SP2 clients). About 3 months ago we noticed that the occasional user would get into a lockout problem after having changed their expiring password successfully. What happens is that after changing their password they can run fine for a while (even logging out and back in), but then all of a sudden their account gets locked out. However, they haven't done anything to lock it out (ie: they haven't put in a bad password three times in succession). We unlock their account and they work fine for a day or so, then boom - it happens again. It occurs while the…
