After security update Office XP keeps asking for accepting end userlicense
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 1 reply

After installing a security update for Office XP I'm getting a pop up message asking to accept end user license before I can use Word or Excel. All would be fine if it wasn't the terminal server where users connect to access Office applications. They can't accept the license as you need administrative privileges to do that so basically they get stuck till they contact me so I can log in as admin and accept the license for them. How do I set them up so they can accept that license themselves when it pops up again? yaro

Backwards compatibility Server 2008 product key
by Guest Herman- 1 reply

Hi All! I've run into a bit of a conundrum: we recently purchased 3 2003 Server Licences, with OEM Media Kits, however when it was delivered we discovered that the supplier had sent us 2008 OEM Media kits (and licences). From what I understand there is a way in which you can obtain 2003 Product Keys, based on the purchase of the 2008 edition - I've actually done this through the Eopen website, but for non-oem kits, please see Q2. All are standard editions, we wanted 2003 R2 64bit. Q1: Is this true? Q2: If so, how do we go about it? I've logged into the eopen website, where we normally register our non-oem server software, however this time round the …

Debug server crash
by Guest Scott- 4 replies

I'm getting notification that the server recovered from a serious error. Sending information to Microsoft indicates a device driver problem. It's a production Terminal Server so following their process for troubleshooting is pretty much out of the question, as the crash can not reliably be reproduced. I downloaded and installed DebugDiag as well as symbol files. When i try and do a crash analysis of memory.dmp I get an error message that DebugDiag failed to locate the PEB (Process Environment Block) in memory.dmp, and as a result, debug analysis for this dump may be incomplete or inaccurate. Does anyone know what I need to do so that DebugDiag can succes…

We are having issues with our exchange 2003 server. For some reason, the Exchange System Attendant wont start. It comes up with Error 1068: The depedency or service group failed to start We need a fix asap as there are alot of people in our company which rely on the exchange server to run (for obvious reasons). All permissions are in place, we have restarted DNS, and rebooted our Active Directory servers. Please advise Regards

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x8007000e. Symptom is exactly as described in hotfix 907875. However as SP2 already included fixes for 907875, cannot apply it any more. Not able to follow workaround solution as no boot.ini file can be found. Re-registered the vss services only work for two days and failed again. Server configuration: Intel Xeon 3GHz 1GB memory hard disk 150GB, only using 30GB of it maximum page file size set to 4GB Any suggestion?

unable to join to the domain with netbios name
by Guest OM- 11 replies

Hi I am unable to join my Vista business machine to a windows 2003 domain using netbios name, FQDN is fine. Netbios resolution is working as I can browse the domain and use net use to map network drive on all DCs within the domain. Also, all Windows XP machines can join to the domain with netbios name. Netbios over tcpip is enabled and IPV6/local firewall is disabled. All client machines are on the same subnet. No WINS is used on the network. The error message is: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target do…

Windows Server 2008 Cannot collect Performnce Alert data
by Guest frankcvc- 1 reply

I am running Windows Server Server 2008 Enterprise edition. I was testing the performance alert feature in Reliability and Performance monitor. I was able to create the data collector set, started the task, and created some activities to trigger the alert. However, no data was collected in my data collector set. At the same time I was able to create a performance counter data collector set and it worked as expected. Your help is greatly appreciated. -- Frank

Performance and Reliability Monitoring fails to act on Alerts
by Guest Andy Bee- 0 replies
I am running Windows Server 2008 x64. I want me server to take an action from a batch file if the processor time gets above some threshold. I set up a data collector set in Reliability and Performance, and set an alert task to kick of the batch file. I also set it to write an alert to the Application Event Log. Neither of these work. If I set a Perf Mon or trace, they operate as expected. However, when I add Alert, the Alert Action and Alert Taks both fail. Interestingly, if there is no Alert Action, the data collector set stops (it will start, then immediately stop with no error.) This does exactly the same thing on two different servers. It lo…

Managing SSL Certificates
by Guest Thomas M.- 2 replies

My employer recently had a major outage because an SSL certificate expired. Consequently, we are now trying to get a better handle on our SSL certificates. Toward that end, we are looking for a way to centrally manage our SSL certificates. We have an environment that includes Windows 2003, Unix, Linux, and Novell servers, and a mainframe system. I would be interested in knowing if anyone out there has any experience with products that can centrally manage SSL certificates, and if so what are the names of the products and the pros can cons of each product that you've used? I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has a scripting solutio…

Greetings Everyone, Below is the error I am getting on the Wireless Client before a user Logs in. I have read numerous articles and cannot seem to find the correct answer. The user accounts are assigned to a Group along with the Computer accounts. There is a valid certificate installed on the IAS server and the Certificate is also installed on the local computers through a GPO. I have read many articles about a computer certificate is that different from the certificate that I created for the Wireless User and assigned to the Remote Access Policy? My issue is that since the computer cannot authenticate to the local network a new user to the wireless de…

hi, have server08 and sbs 03 in same domain with a couple of other pc's. outside of the domain but still on the internal network cant ping or get mail into exchange on the 08 box, in the domain can communicate fine with the server. have been messing with the advanced firewall all week but nothing i do makes any difference, surely it cant be that hard to allow mail in and let me ping/rdp without having to put my laptop into the domain.turning the firewall off seems to have no effect. i have read that gp manages the firewall at a higher level than inbound rules, any ideas?

Introduction to User Accounts and Permissions

Hi there, At the risk of asking what sounds like a lazy question, does anyone know of any good introductions/tutorials to the Windows user security model (XP, Vista and Server 03/08)? What I mainly want to learn is user accounts and file permissions (and how they work together). Strange as it may seem, it's harder to find well-explained material on this than I'd have expected(!) Any help appreciated- thanks! - Triffid

In linux i would run a ping -s "source ip" address. I only see in windows a ping -s for ipv6. Does this exist for ip4 at all in windows 2003? Thanks for the help guys.

Gurus, Running Windows XP Pro SP3. I run my computer as a limited (non-administrator). There is one program I need to launch as an administrator, and I certainly know how to right-click and select "Run As" and input administrative credentials. But what happens is if I save data under that program it goes to the Administror's My Documents and not to my own. So I need to figure out how to use "Run As" but send data to my profile. This would apply to Windows Server 2003 as well I guess. -- Spin

Folder on server regularly becoming locked
by Guest Jason- 6 replies

We're using Windows server 2003 Standard version (5.2 SP2); we use the server to store user data & PST files. Everyones current PST file is stored locally on the C drive but all archive PST files are kept on the server with the users connecting to them via a mapped drive 'U'; i.e. user 1 may have: user1: C:\pst\user1.pst user1archive: U\userdata\pst\archive\user1archive1.pst The problem we are experiencing is that occasionally users are unable to open / expand their archive PSTs, when this occurs the whole of the archive folder on the server is 'locked'. The only solution to the problem is to use 'Open Files' under 'Shared Folders' in 'Computer M…
