A billion (software) RAID 5 questions
by Guest Andrew- 3 replies
For Windows 2003 and up. It is extremely difficult to find any detailed information about software RAID 5 on the Microsoft site. So far i've found about 5 different pages that tell me what a RAID 5 is but does not cover logical things, like how to manage them, in detail. For example, how can I add new disk into a RAID 5? What about best practices for RAID 5 recovery when failures occur. Any help would be much appreciated! Any books, links, anything!

Hi Everyone I have a native windows 2000/XP/2003 network with about 40 clients and two Active Directory domain controllers running 2003 server with SP2. Domain controller 1 (DC1) is hosting DHCP, WINS and DNS and Domain controller 2 (DC2) is hosting a backup DNS server. Recently, a few of my users (3 to be exact) reported that they couldn't access their home drives (home drive = network share to \ \dc1\home$\%username% that's mapped by the user's user account in Active Directory). Upon further investigation, it appears that when the computer is rebooted it loses its IP and doesn't regain it until it gets into windows. However, since it doesn't have an IP d…

I am not sure if this is the right forum or not, but if it is not could someone please point me to the right forum. I have a few questions regarding WDS/RIS First of all is it mulicast or unicast by default? and are you able to change it. Also does the server have to authorized in DHCP in order to work? I removed the authorization of the server in my virtual lab and it still works so I was just wondering if it has to be authorized or if you can get by with out authorizing it and what sort of problems may occur? lastly, this will be used mostly in legacy mode as our organization has not switched to vista yet so I have been using RIPrep to create the…

When I installed one of our new servers it wass still unclear what it was supposed to do and when it came to naming it I just gave it a temporary boogus name thinking it was easy enough to change later. But now when I have changed that name to the real computer name I have discovered that the old name is still used everything from dns zone to exchange profiles and exchange accounts. Why hasnt all that changed when I change the computers name? How do I make sure ALL instances of the old name are updated with the new name? Thanks for any replies!

A question about using Low Level I/O API to read/write binary file
by Guest Bill David- 1 reply
I use Low Level I/O API (_open) to create a binary file. Then I use _chsize to set the size of this file (a big size). And then I _open this file for reading (get fd1), and _open it for writing (get fd2) and _write something to it. After that, I _read something from the beginning with fd1, but find: 1.I have written 65535 bytes to the file; (with fd1) 2.But I can only read 126 bytes out with the 3rd parameter as 1024. (with fd2) Is it possible? How to avoid it? Note: 1.Everything should have been done in a single thread. 2.I am writing an extension for another product, I must use fd instead of FILE* that's why I use Low Level I/O API instead of buffered FIL…

A question for you server builders
by Guest dan- 0 replies
I'm getting ready to build a new server, from scratch. This will be for my test lab so it won't be mission critical but obviously I want it to be highly reliable. I'm pretty well set on the specifications for the server, but when it comes to the motherboard it looks like I have the choice of several manufacturers. Does anyone out there have any advice for me on server motherboard manufacturers that are highly recommended, or should be avoided? What's most important to me, beyond the feature set obviously, is a reputation for high quality, and technical support if needed. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

A simple one...?
by Guest Jake- 9 replies

Hi, We have two domains, DomainA.local and DomainB.local on different w2003r2 domain controllers and separated subnets. When I take a workstation which is a member of DomainA.local and connect it to DomainB.local and try to login with a_valid_username@DomainB.local it complains that the domain (DomainB.local) is not available. It thought that a computer account would be created the first time this workstation logs in to DomainB.local and its user should get access according to the DomainB.local user account used. What am I missing in this scenario? jake

ABE (access based enumaration) not working
by Guest Gilbert- 2 replies
I'm running Windows Server 2003 x64 edition and I've installed ABE (access based enumration). I've rebooted the server but it doesn't seem to work. I tried to access the mail folder with all the subfollders in it. i.e. Share Apps Tech Uploads The user doesn't have access to any of the subfolders but I can still see all the subfolders. If I double click to try to access the subfolders, it says "access denied". But the whole point of ABE is not to be able to see those folders.

Has anyone successfully installed the Access Based Enumeration tool on a server running Windows Storage Server 2003 R2? I have heard it is compatible but when I try to run the .MSI installer it bombs out saying "You can only install on computers running 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1."

about Hyper-V
by Guest Synapse Syndrome- 2 replies

When using Hyper-V, is it right that the 'host' Windows 2008 OS has no more direct access to the hardware as any of the 'guest' OSs, as they all go through the HyperVisor? In that case, there is not chance of using other PCIe cards, even with the main 'host', as it were? Or does Hyper-V allow this someway? I'll have to experiment, but some experienced input would be appreciated. ss.
