The Quickbooks database server on SBS
by Guest Tom Del Rosso- 10 replies

The Quickbooks database server apparently needs an admin to stay logged in while it runs. I'm wondering if you can make it run as a service or in a startup script. The fact that it also closes when you close it instead of minimizing to the tray makes it look pretty lame. What's the trick to make it work, or do you chuck it and let a workstation control access to the shared file? It seems to be designed to search for QBW files on a whole drive instead of simply remembering the folder you select. Are users supposed to open the file as before and rely on the manager to act transparently? This mechanism is strange for a database server. Does it hook file acce…

Event 202 Paged Memory Pool Empty
by Guest Sandy Wood- 1 reply

Just inherited the task to administering our Win2003 Enterprise file server. The server has 16GB of ram and is connected to our SAN for our organization's file services. This morning I was copying some files in the SAN and I started getting some errors in copying large files. Seemed the server was out of storage. Looked like a memory issue. In checking the System event log, I ran across an Event 2020 for the Srv service. It said "The server was unable to allocate from the system paged pool because the pool was empty". Also, I couldn't Remote Desktop into the server. I could login at the server console but it was so low on resources it couldn't even load…

2003 enterprise server keeps rebooting with BugCheck 50, {ffffbff8, 0, 8089b522, 0}

Hello - I have a citrix server (PS 4.0 enterprise) running windows 2003 SP1. This system has all of a sudden started rebooting on it's own... Originally, the reboot was blaming UPHClean, so i uninstalled it and it still is rebooting randomly... I cannot pinpoint the reboot - it seems to happen when someone either logs off a session in citrix, or opens a session... I cannot pinpoint exactly what's going on to make the reboot occur... this is the most recent bug check (any help would be GREATLY appreciated - let me know if you need more info too): Microsoft ® Windows Debugger Version 6.6.0007.5 Copyright © Microsoft Corporation. Hey everyone, Just a quick question. Is it possible to have multiple domains configured on 1 computer? Specifically we want to have a new domain and exchange email services installed on a computer already running an exisiting domain/exchange server. Does anyone have a link for a walk thru or is the process the same as setting up the original? Also can we use the same Static IP for the 2nd domain/exchange server? Thanks in advance! -Scott

Hi All, I'm trying to find a way to backup and restore the network printer settings for a server I have to reinstall. I found PrintMig from MS but it seems it backup\restore only the settings for local printers and not for network ones. Does anybody have an idea about that? Thank you very much

boot.ini file missing - how do I recreate it?
by Guest David B- 10 replies
When investigating our inability to boot from a mirrored system volume, it came to light that our Server 2003 system did not have a boot.ini file. Going through Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings, I am being given the option of writing a boot.ini file, but fear it is beyond my abilities. Is this a very complex file, or can I realistically create one - any advice would be gratefully received!

I am working on a Dell Poweredge 2900 with an integrated RAID controller. The server consists of 2 RAID 1 160GB hard drives. I have a few 80GB hard drives and would like to ghost the OS Image from the 160 GB Drive to the RAID 0 80GB hard drive. The trouble I am having is that after the ghost is complete the server will not boot from the 80GB drive. Is there a way to break the 160gb Mirror or convert to RAID 0, before GHOSTING

Hi all. I am unable to rdp into my server after doing manual windows update. Upon windows update completion i would manually restart the server. Previously if i just click on the restart button from the windows update dialog box i would have this problem. All my other servers do not face this problem except this particular server. All my servers are of win2003 standard with sp2 and have the latest patches. Is there any setting i can do to prevent this issue? Thks in advance.

Domain login errors
by Guest Tom- 9 replies
Hello, We recently installed a new Windows 2003 server; set it up as an additional domain controller; transferred the FSMO roles from our existing Windows 2000 DC server; demoted our old server and removed it from the network. We have approxiametly 200 clients that login to our network. 25% Vista Business and 75% XP Pro. Since the change over we are getting "The system cannot login because the domain (example) is not available.". We don't get the message on all of the clients, only on about 25 machines. I've disjoined and rejoined them to the domain with no problems. The Vista machines work with no problems, we've only seen the problem on XP. If I …

Our server is running Windows 2003 Server R2 Enterprise x64 Edition. Yesterday I happened to notice I can't open Windows Firewall anymore. I tried to start Windows Firewall service, but got the following error: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it's disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it But I checked that service startup type is automatic and it has hardware profile enabled. The server is running Mcafee Antivirus. But I don't think that's the problem because we have another server with exactly the same O…

is there anything other then Remote Assistance for remote assistance...
by Guest Kelvin Beaton- 9 replies

I spent a short stint a year or so ago working in a Help Desk environemnt. On that network they had some Netware server and there was a software package that we used to remotely access the user PC... I think we entered the user account name, the got a popup that asked if we agreed to give them access to their system and likely asked what level of access to give us. The product might have been or had something to do with ZenWorks... I suspect there was an agent installed on both machines... Is there a Micrsoft equivilent? It seems like Remote Assistance has too many hoops to go through... Thanks Kelvin

Uninstalling Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition trial

I took a class that required Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. I didn't have any unusued space and I only have one partition, so I installed the 180-day Evaluation Edition included with my textbook in an alternate file path on the same partition as Windows XP Professional. After this, I found the following FAQ website and statement: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb430832.aspx "Q. If I installed Windows XP Professional on a server running the evaluation version of Windows Server 2003 R2, will Windows XP Professional be removed when the 180-day limit on the Windows Server 2003 R2 software is reached? A. Yes, if you installed th…

Hello everyone, I know that Remote Web Workplace (RWW) is a standard feature of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server; however, I was wondering if there is a similar feature that can be installed on a Microsoft Windows 2003 Standard Server? We have a client who is interested in this technology, but their environment warrants a full standard edition of Windows Server. Thanks everyone and I look forward to reading your responses.

Cannot ping client, even on LAN
by Guest dan- 9 replies

I'm going to repost this issue since the my information in the other post was getting confusing. I have one client on a small LAN that I cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to access, even fromt the LAN, although I can access all other clients with no problem. Upon investigation I find I cannot ping the client from my server (Windows Server 2000) with either IP address or computer name. If I run pathping, I see the computer name is resolved to the IP address so DNS is working. Pathping reports 100% loss of packets on the first hop- failure. I can ping the other way, from client to server, just fine. I've checked the firewall setting and it appears to unbl…

Making domain users local admins
by Guest Laphan- 9 replies
Hi All I had a problem whereby the teachers couldn't use their home internet on their 'domain-linked' laptops because of the limited access that they get. Didn't want to make them part of the domain admins groups so somebody suggested that I add the domain users group (which they are part of) to the laptop's local admins (ie via Computer Management / Users&Groups/ Groups/ Admins. Is this OK to do? They seem to be able to get to the TCP/IP bit now, but what other 'doors' have I opened to the blessed teachers by doing this? Can they install/uninstall software now??? Thanks Laphan

Cannot install IP based Printer
by Guest Hmoll- 9 replies

When I attempt to setup an HP network printer and use a standard TCPIP Port, nothing works: * Print Test Page results in a popup that it failed * Using Notepad, I get a "The handle is invalid" * Using Wordpad, the Print command executes without error, but nothing prints and nothing is in the queue and nothing is in the event viewer * There are no errors in the event viewer * When I setup the port, it immediately recognises it as an HP JetDirect card * I can setup the desired printer on my test machine, that has the same OS-type installed (so I know my process works, it's just failing on this one machine.) * I am using Windows 2003 Enterprise R2, SP2 …

Windows 2003 crashing when enabling /3GB
by Guest Massimo- 7 replies

I've been working a cluster of two Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 systems, which run SQL Server and are also domain controllers for a local domain (it's an hosted environment, so only two servers could be fitted there). The two servers have each 18 GB of memory, but run the x86 Windows version. The /PAE switch is enabled on those systems, in order to take advantage of all that memory; today, we tried enabling the /3GB switch too, to give SQL Server some extra memory... but then the systems started behaving erratically, taking hours (literally!) to start up, even more time to log on, showing plenty of errors in the event log about almost everything crashing…
