Two DC's question
by Guest Dave Mc- 4 replies

I have a very small network (15 workstations) with 2 servers (A, B) both of which are DC's. "A" has all fsmo roles. When "A" goes down, users cannot be authenticated thru "B". I thought, even with no fsmo roles on "B", the network would still be pretty much functional when a DC went down ?? Is there something fundamentally wrong with my network ?

Windows Server 2003 to 2007
by Guest karlman- 3 replies

I am currently running a single Windows 203 STD server which is also my Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005 server. I am wanting to upgrade to 2008 and Exchange 2007. I am having some issues with the current server so I rather not do any kind of upgrade and instead wipe it out and start from scratch. Is there a best practice on how to do this? Should I bring up a temporary domain controller and join it to the domain before killing my server? If I just wiped the server and installed 2007 would I be able to restore my Exchange 2003 backups to the new Exchange 2007 server? If I just wiped the server would I keep the new domain name the same? Could I lose access …

Hi, I have snmp service configured to receive/send snmp packet to a specified server. Every now and then, the service crashes and I was unable to restart the service. The only way to get the service running again is to reboot the server. The following is from the event viewer. Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2008 Time: 9:27:14 AM User: N/A Computer: server Description: Faulting application snmp.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x000417b1. Hi! I have several machines (about 27) I manage in a neat workstation config I put together all by myself! I am so proud... still undergoing testing, and it is almost perfect. It runs across three floors, work rooms, and private rooms in a youth hostel I manage. I am working on building a completely Vista based system eventually... but now it is a hybrid Windows XP & Vista system.... (Vista Ultimate all the way baby! Vista is very awesome and I love it! I miss some of the way XP worked, but it takes some time to get used to.... I am evolving) I am kinda a tech-geekees in terms of tinkering with my machines!, ... so, gulp, here goes my novice question, s…

Win2K3 R2 x64 SP2 DNS & name resolution problem.
by Guest Chuck Chopp- 1 reply

I have a Win2K3 R2 x64 SP2 test environment running under VMware Workstation v6.03 on a Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 host system with 16 GB of RAM and 2x Quad-core XEON processors. There are 2 DCs and 2 member servers. Both DCs are also DNS servers. Each of the 4 systems has 2 virtual NICs configured. The primary IP addressing scheme is in the 172.31.x.x/16 network with static IP address assignment on each NIC, and each system has a NIC that is part of that network. Those NICs also have the IP bindings configured such that they register with the DNS servers. In order for these systems to be able to access the Internet for things like Microsoft Update, etc..., e…
