Hello everyone. I could really use some help here. I know the description is long. But I'm trying to give as much info as I can. Please help! I have a win server 2003 sp2 with a bunch of winxp client machines. I have active directory running. I created a logon script for mapping network drives that is in the active directory->domain->group policy->.... logon script. This logon script works fine for all users. I wanted to create a intranet system with using internet explorer so users can simply browse with links to all the various things that they need. I created the web pages and they are working fine. Internet information service has been…

We have a w2k3 sp2 server and lots of xp sp2 pc's. Most of our users have roaming profiles. We have now added a couple of vista machines for testing and wondered if there was a way of setting up a user account to use the alternative roaming profile for vista when the user uses this machine. Thanks Glenn

WINS
by Guest boba- 3 replies

I don't see WINS configured on any of our Servers. Only DNS with backup DNS. LMHosts lookup is enabled. Does it matter if WINS is configured or not. If I have to can I do it on one of the DCs? We have two DCs. We have some virtual servers (5-7) and 4-5 other servers. I am new to the company. Not enough info is present. Mostly users are using Wyse thin clients to connect to Citrix servers (3 of them). Thanks!

by Guest Paul0426- 1 reply

I'm a Novell guy working with my first w2003 server. I'm use to a "rconj" utility which gives me access to the server like I was sitting at the local console. How do I get the same with a 2003 server. What I have read so far seems to point me towards a remote command line console. Am I missing something? -- Paul

DFS Windows 2003/Windows 2008
by Guest lldan- 0 replies
We are planning on implementing DFS to our organization this year and next. We are currently using DFS now, but very limited. We want to expand this for userdata (Desktop/My Documents folder redirection) as well as some of our other shared folders. Our current environment is a Windows 2003 R2 domain with 5 Windows 2003 R2 DFS Namespace servers. In reading some of the limitations online I’m reading that if you use a domain-based namespace, which is how we are setup today, then we are limited to 5000 target folders. Our plan is to bring in Windows 2008 and slowly replace our file servers at which point we will enable DFS. We don’t have plans on upgradi…

hello everyone, I need to get a good price on an external connector license for windows 2003/2008. Can anyone recommend a good reseller? I have seen on some posts that it should cost in the region of $2000 but here in England I don't seem to be able to get a quote for less than £1600 (over $3000)... Thank you in advance for your time. Intermittent error receiving faxes
by Guest mymanchris@gmail.com- 2 replies

I have a Windows Server 2003 Standard machine configured as a DC with fax service installed. Sending faxes works 100% of the time with no issues. However we are having problems intermittently when receiving faxes. I have attached a sample from ActivityLog\InboxLog to demonstrate errors and one error log from the incoming queue. We have a U.S. Robotics 56K V.92 internal fax modem (MX12146), which should be on the HCL. The modem is configured to answer after 2 rings. We have tried disabling compression and dropping the port speed to 9600 without effect. The most common error we get is "Unknown Fatal Error" 0x0000000c, but we also get "The remote fax machine di…

by Guest Mike San Filippo- 4 replies

I have installed Server 2008 multiple times the past few days. I join to domain, dcpromo (after /forestprep and /domainprep). Everything works fine, then all the sudden I can no longer create shares. I start troubleshooting something (either the GPO's dont come over properly or Netlogon/Sysvol dont create - for that I referrenced to the MS KB article to change the flag in the registry) but now and last few times when I go to create a share, i get: Windows File Sharing This program will not run The system cannot find the file specified Nothing in the event log but that same error. I get this "The Netlogon service could not create server share C:…

Hi, I have a very small business with 5 client computers running on windows 2003 prem. All but one of the client computers have no problems. Suddenly one of the client computers won't print or access the internet. Interestingly, the network computers are listed but fail to print but as experiment I tried to browse for them on the network but got error saying no printers found. when I try to browse with explorer error says to check connection which seems to be OK - I can explore mapped network drives OK etc. please forgive me but I am beginner and don't understand what has happened and how to fix it. I don't think it is a User issue as the same user can logon to…

cannot get FTP 7 to work on Windows Server 2008 from another machi
by Guest Jonathan- 0 replies
I have installed FTP 7 on Windows Server 2008. I am able to connect to the FTP server from IE 7 on the machine, but I cannot see files. I cannot open the FTP in windows explorer. From other machine, I can also connect, but I cannot view directories, see files or upload files. I have set the FTP server to allow only anonymous connections, given the anonymous user the right to browse, read and write. I tried a number of items related to the firewall to resolve them. Finally, I disabled the firewall, but that did not resolve the issue either. First does anyone have any recommendations? Second, I have just spent four hours working on something that …

Delegating printer creation to non-admins in W2K3
by Guest wright47- 4 replies
I'm trying to enable my helpdesk personnel to create printers on some of our member servers, and for business reasons they can NOT be local admins on those servers. I've put them in domain\builtin\Print Operators. I've put them in the Print Operators group on the local servers. I've assigned them in local policy the right "Load and unload device drivers" on those member servers. But they still can't create new local printers. What more do I need to do to enable a non admin to create local printers and/or new ports (for network printers)?

Hi Everybody, I am trying to change the USRLOGON.CMD in the system32 Directory of my 2008 Server. The system keeps telling me that I need permission to do that. I _am_ Administrator, local or Domain, what else do I need to change a simple file? What is the Administrator good for, if not for administration? Thanks Ole

Server 2003 how well will this perform?
by Guest Atreyu- 2 replies

Just need to run this machine to share files, run Serv-U FTP, and Winfax. That's ALL it needs to do. I'm wondering if I could use Server 2003 because I had some crashes with 2000 server installation and I'm not sure I want to fight with it. It is a 733 MHz Pentium III Coppermine, with 512 MB of PC 133 RAM. I have a 3Ware Escalade card running a RAID 1 on storage drives. The primary will just be an IDE/UltraIDE drive. I have an AGP video card, the 3Ware card, a PCI modem and a Netgear GB Ethernet card. The system is a Dell Dimension 4100. I won't be running domain controller services, nor DHCP or DNS,... it will just be a stand-alone server hosting …

S2003 auto-reboot failing to complete.
by Guest Anteaus- 9 replies

Server 2003 R2. Headless, with server in cabinet, remote managed. As its DST today, went round the servers remotely to check the time had updated correctly. This one server decided to bug-out drastically the moment I remotely connected to it. Surprising, as it's never given a single bluescreen in its 4-6 weeks since being built. I strongly suspect a connection with the time change, but that's another matter. Anyway, the real issue was that after the automatic reboot, I couldn't get back into it. Had to abandon my Sunday morning plans, drive to site, get the thing out of the cabinet and attach a screen/mouse to see what was 'up' with the thing. …

W2K3 Web Edition SP2; Network fails until first login
by Guest Michael Gunther- 0 replies
I'm running W2K3 Web Edition w/ SP2. When I reboot my server, sometimes when it boots up, the network is unavailable until I first login. Along with the network being unavailable, all network services, such as web service, are unavailable as well. This does not happen on every reboot but does happen often. I am running this server on VMware Server ver. 1.0.4. I have run Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition servers on VMware and I have not run into this problem before. So, I don't believe the problem lies with VMware, unless it is something to do with Web Edition in particular. I have made three copies of this virtual machine in order to test th…

Hi. Some time ago I tested W2k3's File services for Macintosh, but decided to not use it and uninstalled it. I didn't know that my testing had some undesirable effects on files. If I copy a file from the server to a FAT device, I'm asked to "Confirm Stream Loss", the box states that "Information that might be lost includes: Macintosh Application info". This information is probably hidden in alternate NTFS streams. I know I could copy all those files (too many) to a FAT device and then back to the source. I could also get all the attributes, dates and owner information and put those in place too, but it would be quite a lot of work. Any ideas to get rid …

SBS2003 Network issue?
by Guest ratman and bobbin- 9 replies

Hopefully this is the right group. Quite suddenly in the middle of this week, all users started reporting difficulties accessing the Internet (404 errors) and additionally could not access a unix server application. Then their Exchange sessions started dropping out and then reconnecting at frequent intervals, synchronisation of folders became intermittent too. browstat shows the server as the master browser and I can find no errors anywhere, although it will pick up the unix server any attempt to browse it via Explorer results in an access denied error. This smells like a DNS issue (just a hunch) but the config looks ok. Now staring at a complete rebu…
