USB not recognised after re-boot
by Guest Donald Campbell- 0 replies

Just added a simple external USB drive to a server to act as a secondary backup device. Working fine until a re-boot following M/S updates. Now it is not recognised. I doubt if it were the actual updates. I suspect that the drive is just not being seen as it is already plugged in. However, it does see the USB tape drive OK. Anyone know how to get the box to scan the USB ports and pick up the drive? I typically RDC into this machine as its 25 miles away. Don C

xp ftp behind stock SBserver 2003 works ONCE after xp reboot...

multiple XP Pro stations going through an SBS2003 box, internet works fine. However, if one ftp's from an XP box to an external site, it will Only work after the xp box is rebooted, and ONLY the first time - every subsequent ftp immediately gets connection closed. If i turn on the ftp service on SBS2003, then of course ftp works fine, but only to the server, not to the outside world. I'm at a loss to explain this behavior - can anyone offer a guess as to whether the problem lies on the XPP boxes, or on the SBS2003 box??? It seems it must be the SBS2003 box, as the connection to external sites does actually work the one time... And please, no debate abou…

Windows Fax in Win Server 2003
by Guest rcir88- 0 replies

I was using Windows Fax on my terminal server running Win 2003 Server. It worked OK for years and I would route the incoming faxes to a folder on the network. Recently there were lines missing on each received fax so I tried to install a new fax program that would allow me to make flow control changes, unlike the Windows fax program/service. The new program didn’t work at all so I reinstalled Windows fax except now I cannot route the received faxes to the old folder that used to receive them or any other folder for that matter, regardless of their permissions. When I try to set the routing up in the configuration wizard or directly in the device proper…

Roaming Profiles - Win 2008
by Guest John Holt- 5 replies
Hello all, Setting up a new Windows 2008 network. I have 2 domain controllers. In the past with Windows 2003, users have always been able to logon to my rdp servers as long as 1 of the domain controllers is up. In the users info, terminal services profile tab, profile path I've always had %logonserver%\sysvol\somecompany\someuser It's seems that Windows 2008 will not use the %logonserver%. Is that gone from 08? Is there a different system variable I should use instead? Users can logon fine if I specify the server name. But if that is specific, and that server goes down, loging on ends. Anyone know how I can get around this? Thanks John

View actual server display
by Guest David C- 3 replies

I am using Remote Desktop to connect into our server. However, I cannot see any windows that are popped up on the server display. We have a scheduled task that runs a process and if that process fails it leaves a pop-up error message window that I can only see by going to the server and looking at the display. Is there any way to see exactly what is showing on the server display so that I can close the pop-up window from my desktop? Thanks. David

What's the basic recovery method for the following scenario? 1) Windows Server 2003 Standard (runnign purely as the single network domain controller) 2) A small 15-user network, single domain 3) Have a good "system state" backup available from ntbackup 4) Hard drive failed / server crash. Recovery method???... 1) Replace failed hard drive 2) Reinstall Windows 2003 Standard fresh 3) Run restore of "system state" backup? Any glaring gotchyas to be aware of? - anthonyx26

I have a 2008 server that is a DC. It also is the PDC master. Everyday at 9:00am the server rests the time back by 28 minutes. I have it configured to get the time from the US Navy's NTP server. Because this is a PDc the whole domain get the time from this server.

New Server rebooting at an irregular interval, running x64 OS and
by Guest masmith- 1 reply

We have new 64-bit server and SQL Server 2005 where we moved databases and applications from a 32-bit server and SQL Server 2000. Since we have moved the databases and application to the new server the server crashes and reboots at an irregular interval. This reboot seems to always be proceeded by the memory working set for SQL Server being paged out and available memory going up by a large amount. This usually occurs hours before the server crashes. The available memory stays high until the server crashes. OS: Server 2003 Standard edition x64 Edition Version 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2 Build 3790 Hardware: HP ProLiant DL380 G5 with two Dual core …

Internet options and downloading problems
by Guest tonjiat2001- 1 reply

OK. I think I posted this in the wrong place last night. I'm hoping I am putting it in the right place this time. I'm new at this. Problem-I was having problems downloading Adobe FlashPlayer. I searched the internet looking for a solution and found the problem may lie in Internet Explorer 7. I uninstalled IE7. Not sure what else I did at this point but now I can't reinstall IE7 or anything else for that matter. Still can't download flash player and now can't open internet options from either the internet or from the control panel. When I try, a little box pops up and disappears to fast for me to read what it says. HELP!!

Odd password issue
by Guest Shawn Modersohn- 1 reply

Running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. We have encountered a very odd password situation. When logging into the server (the domain controller) as administrator the password must be entered in all caps. When logging into a workstation as administrator the password can be entered normally and does not need to be entered in all caps. Neither administrator has done anything with password functions. It is almost as if the login prompt for the DC is confused about the caps lock being on. This situation occurs when sitting in front of the server's keyboard as well as with remote VNC connections. Because of this fact we do not suspect a flaky keyboard on the …
