Spooler service stopping on Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server
by Guest Jason A Ash- 9 replies
Hello, I've recently run into an issue with a client who is running Windows Server 2008 as a Terminal Server. What is occurring, is the print spooler service is stopping, with no errors or warnings. Restarting the spooler service allows printing to continue. The client is accessing a Foxpro based program, and we are using Remote Application for the remote users, rather than a full desktop. The server is up-to-date on Windows updates. Other clients, connecting to an identical Terminal Server, running the same application, in the same office, have no problems with the print spooler stopping. Any thoughts? Thank you, Jason A.

I have a windows small business sever 2003 service pack 2 that is rebooting almost daily. It reboots around 5-6am almost every morning. There is no backups or scheduled tasks running at this time or user activity. The server would be at its least active time. The UPS logs show nothing strange but the problem has only been occuring the last month or so. All that is recorded in the event viewer is: Event ID: 1076 The reason supplied by user DOMAIN\Administrator for the last unexpected shutdown of this computer is: System Failure: Stop error Reason Code: 0x805000f Bug ID: Bugcheck String: 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000…

HP printer drivers on a TS
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 9 replies
- 762 views
I'm having a problem installing HP printer driver on a TS to which I'm connecting remotely. Basically when I start the .exe driver file downloaded from HP's website it tells me that I have to use 16bit colour display to run this driver. Why on earth do I need 16bit colour depth to install a bloody driver in the first place?! Anyway, I set up my remote desktop connection to use 16bit colour space just to find out that when I'm connected it gives me 256 colours only. Eventually I extracted the .exe with winrar but now I've got another problem. There are plenty of .inf files in there and I've got no idea which one should I use. Any help on this? Cheers yaro

HOME FOLDER ON 2003 ENTERPRISE ED .64 BIT SERVER
by Guest Al- 9 replies

ok now this seems pretty simple but it doesn't work!! In ADU&C, I can select an AD user, properties, profile and enter a home folder. Z: \\SERVERNAME\HOME$\%USERNAME% Now on the shared server I created a share directory named HOME, then shared named home$, in there I created the users home folder. user boots up his/her XP Pro which is on the domain and can see his/her home folder but can't freaken create or drop any folders/documents in there. User gets: access denied, you need proper permissions on the folder. User has full control on their folder! Tried everything with permissions and google. Still can't get it to work.

Question - Can I force a machine to use a specific DC for Authentication
by Guest Clubsprint- 9 replies
G'day all my proxy/internet server (2003 service pack 2) runs a product called Clearswift Mimesweeper that uses NT authentication to validate user data for instigation of rulesets and reporting. We seemm to have a problem with some users the proxy server is using a different DC to the users PC to authenticate and this is then stopping the users from surfing the web when authentication fails. The prtoblem appears to be that the proxy server is using a remote (WAN) DC to Authenticate. Does anyone know how I can force the proxy to authenticate to a particular or is there some software that will work? Thanks

S2003 auto-reboot failing to complete.
by Guest Anteaus- 9 replies

Server 2003 R2. Headless, with server in cabinet, remote managed. As its DST today, went round the servers remotely to check the time had updated correctly. This one server decided to bug-out drastically the moment I remotely connected to it. Surprising, as it's never given a single bluescreen in its 4-6 weeks since being built. I strongly suspect a connection with the time change, but that's another matter. Anyway, the real issue was that after the automatic reboot, I couldn't get back into it. Had to abandon my Sunday morning plans, drive to site, get the thing out of the cabinet and attach a screen/mouse to see what was 'up' with the thing. …

folder redirection for 1 out of 70 users is not working... why?
by Guest techtedg@kc.rr.com- 9 replies
We have server 2003 and all xp sp2, roaming profiles and user home directories. Inside our main gpo for all users i have configured folder redirection for my documents using the setting "redirect to user's home directory". This works great since the "u:" drive on all profiles is now the same as the my documents location and therefore all my doc links (on desktop and in apps) goes to the same place. We have had this working for over a year now, last week one of the user's my documents folder started not redirecting. When you right click my documents on the desktop it says "c:\documents and settings\username\my docs" instead of the UNC path like everyone els…

Server will not Shutdown but only Restart
by Guest Luis Fajner- 9 replies

I'm building a new Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition (32 Bit) on a Dell PowerEdge 2900. Right after I installed the OS, I can Shut the Server down without any problems. But, after I installed Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 the Shutdown option will not Shut down but only Restart. Hardware and Software are brand new ones. I wipped every thing three times and started over again, having the same symptom. I didn't install any application yet. I only have the OS. The Event Viewer is clean, not even a yellow entry. Can somebody help me to find a solution? I couldn't find any article regarding this problem. Thank you, Luis

Is it possible to move the windows updated files or other files in the c:\windows directory to another partition? A new customer purchased a server from Dell with a 12 GB primary partition. Now they have 2GB free, over 7 GB is the c:windows directory. The other big directory is c:\documents and settings. BTW they are running Windows 2003 sp2 with AD and Exchange 2003. Thank you for your help.

Backup solution system for network
by Guest Marco- 9 replies

Hi. I would like to develop a system to make backups to computers or only for outlokk folder of computers. I have a software on my FP server that backup daily my files. But I have a problem. My users have their own PST files in their PCs into a specific folder. I would like to build a system that would allow me to backup their PST in to a server. No to add those files to my daily backup because there's not enough space in the tapes for that. For me just a symple copy past would be great. The problem with copy past is that users forgot to close outlook. I tried with nt backup, but I think that NTbackup cannot copy PST files if their being use…

WSUS Question after transferring to new server (Master or Upstream
by Guest Saral6978- 9 replies
I successfully set up a new Master server and now have my replicas sync'ing successfully after I ran through the export/import process of transferring the WSUS content from my original Master to my new one. However, there is one slight issue. When I log into the new Master/Upstream server, it basically says all updates need to be approved for installations, rather than where I had left off before the switch. Even if I do a sort for the last 2 months, it still brings up all the updates (going back years), which are like 1100+ updates. Is there any way to import the approval information from my original master server to the new one so it knows that I have i…

Folder redirection
by Guest justmark- 9 replies

Okay, I'm just trying to get a handle on this... We have Folder Redirection set up with a GPO, using \\%HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH% to redirect our users' My Documents to a network share area. We also have Offline Files configured to synchronize their files. From what I can see (and maybe this is by design), it appears that opening a document in My Documents is actually opening it live from the server rather than locally? In addition My Documents Properties states that the target folder location is \\server\etc. rather than a local folder. I guess I don't understand what's happening here. I'd assume that you'd want My Documents to be an actual local folde…

URGENT: How to move 2003 Server to new machine?
by Guest jim- 9 replies
I am an employee of a small company that has an HP Proliant ml350 Windows 2003 Standard server that is about 4 years old and has drives about to fail. I have been tasked with moving the server to new hardware, but I am new to server management in general. (They understand this, but are still confident in my ability to get this done without bringing the company to a grinding halt.) As I am not exactly an experienced server admin at this point, I thought it would be wise to ask you guys what would be the easiest and (most importantly) safest way to move my existing Windows 2003 server to completely different hardware without having to rebuild the enti…

Will mainly be used for investigating / learning / upgrading certifications to Windows 2008 with AD and SQL Server 2005 / 2008 on my home network. Should I go for 64-bit or 32-bit? Have no experience with 64-bit. Does it require the double of RAM for nearly all operations? Will upgrade to 4 GB RAM by Christmas. Thanks in advance! jas

I have a question that should be simple yet I always have issues mapping drives using group policy. I connect to server 2003, joining the domain on a windows xp pro pc. On the server I have group policy set on the OU which contains my user. Under windows settings / logon I have a simple script to map a drive. the drive maps yet disconnects eventually requiring me to log off and on to re-run the script. Limited User Printer Issue
by Guest AJ- 9 replies

I'm new to this company and have only a decent IT skill set, so I'll explain this the best as I can. I've configured three new laptops, one for myself and two for other users in the company. I have administrator privileges. I installed two network printers on their computer and test printed successfully. Once the laptops were passed to the users, they could also print successfully, that day. When they log off then back on (presumably at day's end then the next morning) they cannot print. I can log on/off from my new laptop and never have printing issues. Seems very likely to be a permission issue somewhere. They *can* access the printers propertie…

When I attempt to setup an HP network printer and use a standard TCPIP Port, nothing works: * Print Test Page results in a popup that it failed * Using Notepad, I get a "The handle is invalid" * Using Wordpad, the Print command executes without error, but nothing prints and nothing is in the queue and nothing is in the event viewer * There are no errors in the event viewer * When I setup the port, it immediately recognises it as an HP JetDirect card * I can setup the desired printer on my test machine, that has the same OS-type installed (so I know my process works, it's just failing on this one machine.) * I am using Windows 2003 Enterprise R2, SP2 …

Server 2003 Standard .bkf file issue
by Guest Boethos- 9 replies

I am running SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. Several times in the last few months, and twice in the last few days an odd thing has happened. I start getting errors related to lack of available drive space. When I check it out, I find that there is a file that has been created, apparently automatically by windows, that is taking up all 54+ gigs of available drive space. The file is named 'emergency.bkf' and it always appears in the 'inetpub' directory. This server hosts a Cold Fusion driven website using a SQL Server database. I have SQL Server database set to back up regularly, and several scheduled tasks in Cold Fusion. But…
