Windows 2003 crashing when enabling /3GB
by Guest Massimo- 7 replies
I've been working a cluster of two Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 systems, which run SQL Server and are also domain controllers for a local domain (it's an hosted environment, so only two servers could be fitted there). The two servers have each 18 GB of memory, but run the x86 Windows version. The /PAE switch is enabled on those systems, in order to take advantage of all that memory; today, we tried enabling the /3GB switch too, to give SQL Server some extra memory... but then the systems started behaving erratically, taking hours (literally!) to start up, even more time to log on, showing plenty of errors in the event log about almost everything crashing…

Can you have a KMS host that will activate multiple OS's such as Vista, 2008 Std, and Ent? If so, now? The command I know of will wipe the original key if you import a new one.

Anyone running Java on WS 2008?
by Guest Dominick- 19 replies

Is anyone running Java (32 bit) on IE7 under Windows Server 2008? I have done all the steps to try and trouble shoot this, but it does not support applets on my machine. I have reset IE7, uninstalled, confirmed uninstalled with Windows Install Cleanup, turned off AV and antispyware, reinstalled, and when I go to a test applet page the JRE (v 6u6) shows in the system tray, and a blank window pops up with a little Java icon in the top left corner, but nothing happens on the IE7 web page that should show a test applet running (one of the standard ones on the Internet, not anything I wrote). The kicker is, JRE runs fine with Firefox. To me this looks li…

Auto-Updates for production servers
by Guest Brian Kitt- 9 replies

Hello. I am a developer, and have been having an ongoing battle with our Network Admins, and would like advice here. They have Microsoft Windows Auto-Updates turned on for all production servers. This has caused numerous problems, because patches get applied, then cause servers to reboot, or other miscellaneous problems. I keep trying to tell them it is not a 'best practice' to have auto-updates on for production servers, but rather they should push them out with admin tools on a regular scheduled basis. They assure me they 'know what they are doing', and auto updates 'are required to prevent viruses and hackers'. They have assured me that Microsof…

Thank you

Network Performance Drops to a Crawl after Installing DNS
by Guest Howard Swope- 10 replies

Windows 2003 Server RC2 SP2 3COM 3C940 GB Onboard NIC I recently installed 2003 server. Got the latest updates. I then set up this machine as a domain controller on a new forest and followed the the instructions to set up the DNS. Now if I try to do anything over the interent, I am lucky to get a full page to load. There seems to be all kinds of communications problems. If I stop the DNS and point everything over to my old server which I want to decomission when this one is up and running, all network performance is perfectly fine. Any thoughts?

How does authentication work?
by Guest The_Nite_Owl- 10 replies

When a device attempts to connect to a shared drive on another server it is the remote server that requests the credentials to authenticate the connection right? What determines how long the connection can remain before the remote server requests authentication again? We have a Win 2003 server that maps drives to SAN sharespace through another Win 2003 server. The drive mappings are made using a different set of credentials than the current logged on account. Win 2003 server after SP1 no longer caches credentials for connections using a different account than the logon account. When we boot our server the mappings are established but the drives do not…

Remote Access
by Guest Craig Kalugin- 10 replies

We have a SBS 2003 with 10 users. The owner of the company wants to be able to access the network from his home. Not just the network but also his work pc desktop, which has unique programs he needs to be able to run. I have looked at remote desktop and was able to log in but in only gives you a desktop from the server i'm guessing. How do i configure everything so when he logs in from home he gets access to his work computer, and does the work computer need to be powered on, or can it be in sleep mode?

Hi, I am using ADS 1.1 booting into Windows PE, everything works fine, ADS status shows that the node is currently running in the PE environment. My question is, how from the ADS can i map and drive and run a command from the mapped drive. I try this with the commands embedded in a batch file but it just errors out with unknown error. What exactly is the point of PE in ADS, is it actually usable? Matthew

General Page Initialisation Failed The specific error is: 0x8007000d: The data is invalid An error has occurred attempting to retrieve tasks account information. You may continue editing the task object, but will be unable to change task account information. The o/s is Windows 2003 SP1 This error also appears even when we create a new task. Permissions removed from domain controler, how to fix
by Guest ThatsIT.net.au- 8 replies

I have a problem where a windows 2000 domain controller has had its hard disk permissions changed. By default everyone has full access to files on c drive. Someone has changed this believing that it was a security risk. He removed everyone permissions and gave administrators full control, and users read and execute. At next reboot the domain controller would not function, it gives a error I can not remember at the moment, but to do with security and asks you to reboot in directory restore mode. You can not log in and they have forgotten the system restore password or it is not accepting it. My guess is that the system can not access files it needs. Wha…

Which edition of Server 2003 x64?
by Guest Niall Connaughton- 7 replies
Hi, I'm going to ask a question you've probably seen a lot of, but my problem is that finding one source of information that is whole and consistent on this issue has been quite tricky. So I thought I'd ask here to see if I get some expert knowledge. It have to decide what version of Windows Server 2003 to install on a collection of servers, choosing from Standard or Enterprise editions, 32 or 64 bit. Our provider charges us roughly 3-4 times the price of Standard for installing and maintaining Enterprise edition. On the servers, we'll be running a service written in C# which uses some mixed managed/unmanaged C++ code. The machines have at least 8GB…

USB Port Issue Breaks Network?
by Guest Jody- 9 replies
I have two NEW Windows 2003 SBS R2 Servers. Both are exhibiting the same issue after a recent Windows Update where all the USB ports stopped working and now there is a popup in task bar that keeps displaying the message “USB Device Not Recognized.” I first noticed a problem when the previously working USB keyboard and mouse locked up. After rebooting they were not recognized and the system hung after the Windows Splash page until I unplugged ALL USB devices. I could only get back I into the server by switching to a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. This issue just developed recently and appears to have also broken network communications between the server(s…

Revert roaming profiles to local profiles?
by Guest jim- 10 replies

On Windows Small Business Server 2003, how would you go about reverting roaming profiles to local profiles for the users? It is a home business with only 1 PC and 2 laptops attached to a 2003 Windows Small Business Server. I think it's overkill, but its what they have presently. They are frustrated at the long shut down and boot up times, so I thought that moving their roaming profiles back to the desktops (especially since there is no "roaming" taking place) would help them with this issue. Does anyone know how this is done? jim

USB Controllers and Devices - Unknown Device ??
by Guest E-Double- 7 replies

The USB ports on one Windows 2003 Server are not working, and in Device Manager under USB Controllers and Devices it says ''Unknown Device (along with entries for Root Hub and something else). On an identical server (hardware and software should all be the same) where the USB ports are working the entry reads 'USB Composite Device Driver' instead of 'Unknown Device.'' Where or how exactly can we either get this specific driver or fix this USB issue? We tried to delete the device and have Windows reinstall it, as well as tried to copy the entire drivers/inf folder from the server that is working to reinstall the driver on the server with no USB functiona…

login script to copy file
by Guest Rhea- 13 replies

I have Windows 2003 SBS and most users with WinXP Pro. I have tried this line of code in the login script but it doesn't copy the file. I have full rights to both directories. What is wrong with the code or do I need to add anything? I wouldn't have thought it was so difficult to get a file copied from the server to a user's c drive. Help please, this can't be that hard. copy "servername\Shared\OrderSystem\NewBPApp.exe" "c:\Program Files\Beaver Plastics\Order System\" I have also tried various adaptations to this basic line of code, to no avail. Thanks.
