Getting Windows Media Center on Windows Server 2008
by Guest boe- 2 replies

Hello, Just about everything MS doesn't enable in 2008 such as sidebar, live mail etc all work on Windows 2008 - but without the slow performance of Vista. I have the install disc for Vista and a valid license. If anyone figures a way to get media center working on this great OS please let me know. A lot of people who have tried out Win2k8 as a desktop seem very happy and even though I really really really didn't like Vista because of the slow performance, I have to admit 2008 seems to do everything Vista SP1 does but at the speed of XP. Thanks

Need to fix DNS name resolution issue

I just discovered that I have a DNS name resolution issue on my network. When using remote desktop, I cannot connect via the remote client’s computer name, I can only connect via IP address. Which lead me to believe that it’s a DNS name resolution issue, the problem is that I have no clue on how to fix it. I am running Windows Sever 2003 SP3 with active directory and DNS.

Offline files permissions query?
by Guest UselessUser- 1 reply

Hi, I have walked into a new scenario which is odd for me! Basically I have a server which has this structure E:\HomeDirectory\%username% The folder HomeDirectory is shared, with share permissions set as Everyone Full Access. NTFS permissions have only administrators, creater owner, and system as full control. If we create a new user in AD with their H drive set to: \\server\HomeDirectory\%username% This creates the folder correctly and it is perfectly usable... Now we have a few users who are right clicking their H and selecting make available offline, and this is working fine. However I could not do this myself (I do not run as domain adm…

Folder inhertiance from profile created folders.
by Guest rborias- 0 replies

Is their any way to turn off folder inheritace completly. What I am getting is we have a cluster server which stores Users profile directories in one share and another share Resource data. Now when we create a new user and put in a drive letter and path it creates a user folder in that user profile directory. Now the Root folder "users" has inheritace turned off, but when a new user folder gets created inheritace is turned on for that folder. The root still has it off but anything new get inheritance. Any way to have thus turned off or am I missing something to stop this. The CIO sees this as a security risk if any change is made to the root folder…

DHCP Errors
by Guest Aaron- 0 replies

So we started having intermittent reports of workstations having network connectivity issues. Basically, a client computer will come up and not be able to talk to the network. It has no IP address, and doing an ipconfig /renew causes a long wait followed by an error saying there was no response. We started looking at it as a network issue, as rebooting the machine would often cause the problem to correct itself. This morning I decided to take a look at the domain controller/DHCP server for that VLAN and noticed a couple of odd errors: Event ID: 1014 The JET Database call returned the following error : -1808. Additional Debug Information: JetBackup. Eve…

Fax Service email routing problem
by Guest dwayneross@coolings.co.uk- 0 replies

Hi, I am having a problem with SMTP authentication and i am not sure where the problem is. Basically we are using an external isp for hosting all our email and then collecting all our email via smtp / pop. Up until recently we were using another host for some of our email. One of the functions we used was emailing all faxes that are received into Microsoft Fax Console within Windows 2003 server and routing them to an external mailbox for clients to pick up. When changing the settings within Microsoft Fax Service manager the faxes are no longer routing to email. The event log within windows gives event id's of 32083, 35089, 32078 which all suggest an smtp …

Restore the registry?
by Guest boe- 0 replies

Hello, I've just started playing with Windows Server 2008 a few days ago- so far I'm very pleased with it. I have not yet set up a backup job. I was curious if there was anything in Windows Server 2008 that let me go back to a previous day like System Restore? Thanks (the reason I ask is I think I messed up something in the registry - now when I go to personalize my desktop it says "this page failed to load")

Best backup solution
by Guest Gorge Lucas- 1 reply

Hi there, I was wondering what you thought of this solution. I have 3 servers. A domain controller, exchange box and spam server. I was thinking about purchasing Acronics True Image backup to take clones of the drivers and use Symantec Backup EX to do file based backup. These are 2003 servers with Exchange 2003. What do you think of this setup? Sounds strage? What would be an ideal solution? Thanks

Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server
by Guest rllngriver- 10 replies

Periodically, I have to install software and most of the sites have pcs in the server room instead of under the desks. How do I map to the external hard drive I have attached to the server so I can install the software on each pc? The way I map to the c drive of the server is by entering the ip address and then \c$ but I need to be able to map to the external drive letter as well. Please advise. Thank you. Workgroups to do not apply here.

Re: Opening a share
by Guest rllngriver- 0 replies

Re: Opening a share Thank you. I figured out the issue. I work with proprietary Market Data Equipment/Software that will not allow you to share such a device even though the server runs Windows 2003. So, my work around will have to be either copying the necessary files over to where they can accessed or using a cd instead and sharing the cd drive. I am not sure if this will help someone else, but they may have a similiar question at some point. Strange Remote Desktop Issue
by Guest Kryten- 5 replies

Hi, I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain why this is so.. An application that I run on a couple of W2K3SP2 boxes automatically starts after a reboot, you can tell the application is starting because an item is popped onto the taskbar while the associated services are being started. When this is done a service monitor window is shown on the desktop. Leastways thats what you see if you happen to be standing in front of it logged in as user123 ,<eg> Logged in as user123 via rdp and none of this is visible - to the point that you would never know, without further investigation, that the dratted application is running at all. Does anyo…

Group Policy does not apply
by Guest D.Forde- 2 replies
I have 1 domain and no OU's. I have used GPO and have created a policy that set's a min password length & enables complexity. I have setup a filter to assign it to a single user (for testing reasons). I perform GPUPDATE \FORCE and the event viewer shows it completed. The problem is when I log onto a pc with the user profile I defined in the GPO filter the passwords rules are not assigned, and they can change their pw to anything they want. I even tried rebooting the PC but that didn't help.

Hi all, I have a Windows server 2000 PDC named "myserver" with a share named "myshare". The path is \\myserver\myshare. A legacy app depends on this share. Now I should upgrade the PDC to Windows Server 2003 in a new hardware. The new PDC server will be named myserver2. The old one will be demoted and shutdown after transferring roles so I will lost the path \\myserver\myshare and the legacy app will fail. Once promoted to PDC the myserver2 can not be renamed back to myserver. What can I do? Is it possible to create some kind of alias such a way all the PCs in the network can access the new \\myserver2\myshare as \\myserver\myshare? Any hint is welco…

RRAS Creating Multiple DNS Entries for Server Name
by Guest anthony@necrofiends.com- 3 replies
- 201 views
I'm running Server 2003 R2. I've installed a second NIC card so I can run RRAS. The second NIC is configured to not register it's connection in DNS. It does anyway. Also, the DHCP connections reserved for RRAS create DNS entries for themselves. So, I have multiple DNS entries for the same server name and it causes problems resolving to the correct IP address of the server. Any suggestions?

Can't run scheduled task
by Guest alicorn2- 8 replies

I'm having "fun" today :) Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 I have a scheduled task that I want to run a batch file hourly, as a service, with no one logged in. I've simplified and simplified, so now I'm down to bare bones using a different batch file that does next to nothing to try to troubleshoot it. The "test" batch file has this in it: @echo off echo %date% %time% Start of task, running as %UserName% >> c:\temp\test.log REM this is where I was calling my real batch file, but I've even taken that out now echo %date% %time% End of task >> c:\temp\test.log echo ------------------------- >> c:\temp\test.l…
