Every now and then some user creates a file or folder that can't be deleted - they don't have rights to change the rights on the folders. The files or folders are not in use but you can't delete them - checked on the server to verify the file wasn't in use. Any suggestions?

I have set Disable Map Network Drive in the group policy of ADS domain and it works fine. But when the user logs in with the login script which contains net use commands to map network drive, the drive gets mapped. how can I disable this? My requirement is: 1. The users should not be able to map netowrk drives thru Net Use command 2. Network drives should not get mapped even though they are defined in the login script. Thank You

Windows 2003 reverts to previous password after reboot
by Guest Charles Windhausen- 4 replies

I have several Windows 2003 x64 machines that are on a workgroup (not a domain). They use file sharing and two mirrored SQL servers between them. Every time these machines reboot, either manually or because of an update, they revert back to their previous administrator passwords. Every one does this consistently. Can someone explain this phenomenon and how to fix it? Thanks, Charles

External Disk Permissions
by Guest Richard Price- 3 replies

Hi, To save time and network copying, I decided to put together a full 'install set' for our servers on a little external USB2 disk - just stuff like all the .Net Framework installers, IE7 updater etc However, I seem to almost randomly run into servers that have issues with accessing these files - they can see the disk just fine, they can see the files just fine, but try and run any of the executables and I get the following error: 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item' No matter what permissions I give them, I get the above error. I have even copied the files to the …

Hello, I'm trying out Windows 2008 and so far it seems to run much faster than Vista SP1. I seem to be able to run almost everything I can with Windows XP but I can't figure out how to add my custom icons back to the toolbar in IE7. I've installed this in the past on all my systems by creating a folder called c:\install\iebuttons and I have about 10 urls with icons that I put in the command bar of IE. I have registry files I click on and it creates the shortcut I want - i.e. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{3B296460-5FFE-47e0-B37A-AD8029A6EF8C}] "Default Visible"="Yes" "ButtonText"="Google" "HotIcon"="C:\\install…

Hello, I'm sure the answer is obvious but I can't seem to find out where to adjust the size of desktop icons in Windows 2008. Even though I have my resolution set for very high, the icons on my desktop are very large. I realize this is a pretty trivial question but I'd still like to know. Thanks

Hello, I typically check one of my hotmail accounts with outloook express that I also use with newsgroups but in Win2k8 you use Windows Mail instead of OE. When I start to set up my e-mail it tells me they don't support it for http hotmail any more I should use Windows Live Mail - I go to set it up but it says it doesn't run on Windows Server. I realize there are other products I can use but I am curious if there is a free MS product that can do what Outlook Express did? I'm playing around with Windows Server 2008 x64 as a desktop - seems to perform significantly better than Vista SP1 - not sure why but I've read a lot of theories - but for me it …

Which windows 2008?
by Guest Roger- 1 reply

I am in the position of having to by new equipment to replace aging production servers. Rather than get 'left behind' we need to get new OS with them as well. Here is what we want to accomplish: Network load-balancing across two WEB servers running asp.net apps File replication across the same two servers We do not run under a Windows Domain topology, just a work group. 1) Can we do this with Windows 2008? 2) Which version do we need? We do not want to add the load of Domain controller to any of our servers, and we don't want to have to purchase 2 more servers to act in that role if it can be avoided at all. We only have 8 servers in this location total, …

Domain Account Local Drive Mandatory Profile
by Guest ProtonJohn- 0 replies

Hello, I have been attempting to setup a mandatory profile for use with public access library systems. The is a domain service account. I would like to have the mandatory profile copy the profile from the local computer drive, instead of a network location, each time the system logs into the dekstop. Is this possible? I understand a domain account can have a mandatory profile stored on a network server and a local account can have a mandatory profile stored on the local drive. I need the domain account to use a locally computer stored mandatory profile. I have tried some of these: "c:\profiles" and "%systemroot%\profiles" in the domain account pr…

RE: Dynamic DNS, DNS Records & Scavenging Hi Guys, Has anyone had anythought on my post from last week? I'm pulling my hair out to get this working. Hello Peeps, We have an issue whereby we want external clients to register there VPN IP addresses in DNS. The VPN connections are handled by a RAS server which gets the IP addresses from DHCP. There are two DHCP Servers; DC01 DHCP,DNS, Domain Controller Server01 DHCP,DNS, Domain Controller Server02 RAS Both the servers are set to update A and PTR records for clients. In DNS however this doesn't seem to be the case. I then added DC01 to the DNSUpdateProxy and when i did this i saw…

Configuring Updates - stuck at 0%

I've rebooted a server and *somehow* updates had been installed, and now on reboot it's stuck at 0% on update 1 of 3, and has been for about 30 minutes - any suggestions? Unfortunately it's my PDC and Exchange server, so it's important to me to get it running again. And of course, given I only switched to 2008 and Exchange 2007 yesterday from my old server, I don't have a backup yet either :( Dino

Windows Server 2008 non-functional network
by Guest Dean Cleaver- 3 replies

I have a new Windows 2008 X64 server that has decided it's network is now non-functional. Almost nothing works any more (no remote desktop, Exchange etc are all non functional) and the network connectivity icon indicates it's not connected - however I can ping it from a client machine. Network and Sharing center will not open. Exchange services will not start - it's pretty much hosed my box (and I only built it today, so ther are no backups). Any suggestions on what to do or try? Detect and repair fails miserably. I don't know of any other way of trying to fix the issue.
