Share Permissions on 2000 and 2003
by Guest Broonie- 0 replies

I have a file (a Crystal report) in a share that I want to access from an app installed on computers that are on a different domain from the server on which the share exists. There is no trust set up between the two domains. Previously this file was held on a Windows 2000 server and I had no problems accessing it. Now the file is located on a Windows 2003 server and I can no longer access it. The share permissions are the same on the new server as they were on the old one and I realise that the Everyone token is no longer handed out to anonymous logons anymore by default in 2003 so I enabled the default domain controller policy setting to allow everyone permiss…

intermittent dfs drive mapping issues
by Guest Jay man- 3 replies

We have intermittent issues with users mapping a drive to a dfs share. Drive mappings happen through a login script. Drive mappings to other servers work fine. Symptoms: 1.A "system error 3 has occurred" error appears when running the login script or trying to map the drive manually through DOS using net use n: \\domain\share\folder 2.When trying to map through explorer, a system error occurs. 3.Yet when you browse to the share from run you can view the contents and only then are you able to map the drive to \\domain\share\folder The above happens irrespective of whether just the domain name is used or the FQDN is used. Client workstations having…

Windows Server 2008 Editions
by Guest tonyz.wrightz@consultant.com- 3 replies

Hi, I am under the impression that there are limitations put on different Windows Server 2008 editions so that they can only handle a certain number of concurrent connections. Is this true? And if so, does anyone know where I might find this information? Regards, Tony

OS almost freezes while copying files to USB harddrive
by Guest David Bala¾ic- 16 replies

Hi! I noticed this strange phenomena while copying files to an external USB harddrive. When I copy (using the explorer) a directory containing about 20 5-10 MB big files and 20 about 2GB big files from my internal sata drive to the external usb drives, then this pattern emerges: - the external HD is busy all the time (its LED blinks) - the internal HD LED is : - off for 40 seconds - then half on for 10 seconds (blinks fast, giving the impression of half light intensity, compard to full on) - fully on for 25 seconds This then cycles, until the copy is finished. During the 25 seconds when the internal HD is constantly lit, the system is almost…

Hi everyone Just a question - how easy would you say is it to buy the MCSE set of books, self study it, ask friends and in forums what you dont know; and go write the exams WITHOUT registering at a educational organization. ....or would you advise to do it through a college, technickon, etc? Obviously you need to have done the coarse to answer the question

Procedure for Recovering Missing SYSTEM32 Folder
by Guest Will- 4 replies
I posted over many different threads a problem I had on a Windows system where the SYSTEM32 folders suddenly disappeared, taking out the registry with them. I recovered from this situation today as follows. I am including this in a server thread because the recovery procedure would be essentially the same (except for the lack of system restore points with Windows 2003), and I am documenting for posterity. 1) I restored an old backup of the file system to a portable drive. 2) I restore an old backup of the system state to the same drive. 3) I booted the down system with ERD Commander and the portable drive attached. 4) I copied over first the missing …

Do I need CALs for service accounts?
by Guest SF- 3 replies
We have some mail and scan to folder enabled printers on my network. For best functionality they need to have a network login in with which to authenticate to the domain. These "users" show up in my licensing server as unlicensed users. I am uncertain if these accounts should require CALs or not. My vendor account rep can't seem to give me a straight answer. Do these "service users" require CALs? and if not how can I get them out of my license reporting to make the books look correct? Any answers?

On my Win2K sp4 file server, i have some files that you can open, but you can't save over them, rename them, or move them to another folder, you get the It is being used by another person or program. I tried using Process Explorer to see what had the file open and it couldn't find it. i disabled backup exec remote agent, diskeeper service (had to kill it cuz it wouldn't stop normally) and mcafee virusscan 8 related services, and none of those freed up the files. Help!!!!

Cannot connect to DB on Windows Server 2003 through Web Application
by Guest cardinalbean@gmail.com- 2 replies

I have narrowed this issue down to Windows Server 2003 not allowing my web application to connect to the SQL 2000 DB. I have an ASP.NET web application running on my machine that is connecting to SQL 2000 server that lives on Windows Server 2003 machine. The connection will not work from my web application to the database. The connection does work from my machine through query analyzer and also from a .NET desktop application. Is there a setting on Windows Server 2003 that blocks connections to SQL Server that are initiated from a web application? Thank you, Josh

Bug in file sharing transfer speed
by Guest שאלתיאל- 0 replies
When I transfer a big file (40GB) via a shared folder, then the speed infact (size/time) is only 100Mbit/s, while with other applications I can transfer files at 800Mbit/s. I have checked a lot of parameters at perfmon, and found that at the receiving end, the speed of disk writes is limited (only in MS file sharing) to only 12,000,000. If someone knows a solution to this please let me know. If someone can repeat my experiment - You would need disks that are capable of at least 30MByte/s, and a gigabit network. Send a file that is large enough so that the transfer will take enough time to check stuff at perfmon. Send it via a shared folder, and wat…
