Hi, did anyone here upgrade his evaluation copy of WIN 2008 Server into a regular Lizense? How to do? Do I have to delete the whole installation and reinstall the server and all installed programms and data? Or do I have just to put in a lizense key somewhere? Something else to do while upgrading? Thank you for any help. Klemens

Windows Server 2003 Logging
by Guest IshmaelDS- 9 replies

I need help finding a good log software. I have an issue with my 2k3 server that is not being caught by the event viewer. This server is running a Progress DB so I need it to be rather lightweight but fairly intensive as well. I'm not sure what the issue is, The system says it's rebooting but it doesn't reboot physically. When I log in it asks me why it shut down as it would from a unexpected shutdown and the event viewer says that it shut down but there are logs in the application viewer from seconds after the unextected shutdown and when i arrive at the server it's been less then 30 seconds and the system is back up with the DB's loaded. It's very odd. I…

extremely long logon time for one particular user
by Guest Alan Truism- 9 replies

I have a problem with one particular user, in which whenever he tries to logon it takes around 20 minutes for the computer to complete the logon state. This seems to carry over to whatever workstation that particular user is using. If anyone else logs on to their workstation it takes the normal amount of time. It seems to hang quite a long time on the "applying personal settings" part of the logon process. Then I get the following errors in the event log for that particular workstation. - == Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1030 Date: 11/1/2007 Time: 11:14:35 AM User: domain-corp\fred Computer: CORP-CF-SPAR…

Drive mapping problem
by Guest Pascal Goulet- 9 replies

Hi all, Here is a brief description of my problem. Every once in a while (like once avery 3-4 months) I have a very strange problem. One of my user (I have 900 of them) is unable to map network drive via my login script or map the printer who are host on the same server. The weird thing is that my login script do not only map ressources from this server. And every other map drive are mapped without problems. I do not have any lead on the event log of the client computer, the server who does'nt share his ressources or the DC. I first tought it might be a SID problem cause if I copy the user from the AD and recreate it with the same login and grou…

We have a single domain with several locations connected together via a WAN. One user in one location is having problems accessing any network shares on one server. Anytime she tries to access a file or printer on this server it prompts for a username/password. Once she enters her credentials she can connect to the resources with no problems. If she logs off and back on she must re-enter her credentials to access the server. She is logging onto the domain. She can access other servers in the domain with no problems and without being prompted for her credentials again. Other users can log on to her PC and access the same server normally, although the acc…

I cant give the user Domain admin rights, but did allow remote desktop to the server. The user can logon but the backup wont run without elevated priveledges, and I dont see power users anymore. Any help would be great.

Tricky question in regards to DNS and ISP DNS

Hiya all, I am gonna build a network and this is what its gonna look like(I hope), http://i16.tinypic.com/4rafpn7.jpg PC1 : Windows XP Professional PC2 : Windows 2003 Server PC3 : Windows XP Professional the big question I have now is the following, people here have already told me I should set up forwarders in my Windows 2003 DNS section, or just forget about using them and just stick with the root hints already in there. But my big issue with this is, my PC2 isn't supposed to be online all the time, its actually a fileserver that I occasionaly boot so I can transfer my files to. But the way people here suggested I set it up(like you can see in th…

High CPU Usage After KB958644
by Guest jason.hill- 9 replies
- 1.3k views
Hi, We installed the critical update KB958644 on a Windows Server 2008 machine 2 days ago and have experienced a massive increase in CPU utilisation, apparently for the System process. Our performance monitor reports typically showed the web server running in the 5-15% CPU utilisation range for the whole day even under fairly heavy load. For the last 2 days, the CPU graph now looks like an earthquake has hit and we have had to reboot the server both days to reset the CPU to normal. Today, the graph was showing 90%+ CPU utilisation and we were not able to RDP to the box and all web sites were non-responsive so had to get the ISP to do a hard reboot. The grap…

Windows 2003 partition setup
by Guest Myron Oakley- 9 replies

I have installed Windows 2003 server on a new Dell 2900. This machine has a raid 5 config of 500 gig. I took the default c: partition size of 12 gig when I installed. This machine will be run Terminal server and also act as a file server. I have now realize with Program Files and Document and Settings folders on this partition we'll have immediate problem. I'm either going to have to resize the C: partition *or* reconfigure the system with these folders on a new drive. There isn't a lot of information on this subject available. How are the real world admins doing this? My gut reaction is to simply divide the array right in two 250 gig volumes, …

SBS2003 Network issue?
by Guest ratman and bobbin- 9 replies

Hopefully this is the right group. Quite suddenly in the middle of this week, all users started reporting difficulties accessing the Internet (404 errors) and additionally could not access a unix server application. Then their Exchange sessions started dropping out and then reconnecting at frequent intervals, synchronisation of folders became intermittent too. browstat shows the server as the master browser and I can find no errors anywhere, although it will pick up the unix server any attempt to browse it via Explorer results in an access denied error. This smells like a DNS issue (just a hunch) but the config looks ok. Now staring at a complete rebu…

Remove "orphaned" domains from Log On To box?
by Guest doug.masters@gmail.com- 9 replies
- 733 views
Last Friday, my company disconnected our WAN from our former owner. We both shared the same domain, we seized all FSMO roles to your DC's after being disconnected. That seemed to go well, the event logs on my DC's are pretty clean and no users are reporting any problems. The former owner had several other domains that would show up in the Log On To drop down box. We never logged into those, but since we're disconnected I would like to remove those and only offer the valid domains. My only thought on what to check was the Domains & Trusts, those domains do not exist there. Thanks in advance for pointing me in the direction I need to go.

tried to do an uograde from svr00 to svr03, i have a 3 phys hd (ide) 2 drives on a stripe (sata) and 2 scsi drives striped, now my boot.ini is right 0/0/0/1, but it shows as my d (letter) drive, can i swap c and d? during the upgrade it failed and there was no way to go forward or back so i unplugged the sata and the scsi, i guess thats how the letters got messed up another interesting thing when the system boots, it posts then polls the scsi and drive 1 says its c, and drive 2 says its d, then it polls the sata. but even w/the scsi saying they are c and d it still picked up the master ide on chnnl 0 thanks -- rf

DHCP Problem - I think??
by Guest RGA- 9 replies

I am running SBS 2003 SP1 and have recently noticed in the logs that I am getting event ID 1020 that states I have 0 IP addresses left to hand out from my scope. I run a network with only about 20 clients and had the scope set to give out 100 IPs. I have extended the scope and I don't get that error anymore, but upon further investigation I have realized that the "type" of ip addresses taking up all the leases are DHCP/BOOTP. Has anyone seen this or know what may be causing it as I can't seem to figure why all my ips keep getting leased. Thank in advance!

Setting up MS Virtual Server 2005
by Guest Markus- 9 replies

I have downloaded and installed MS Virtual Server (VS) 2005 on a PC running XP Pro SP2. I have an application that has been running on a LAN for some time. My goal is to test this app running over the Internet using Terminal Services (TS). I am a bit of a beginner to some of these issues, so apologize for any basic questions, and appreciate any and all help. To start, I have a very basic question: I understand I can set up multiple server environments or configurations to conduct testing using VS. Does this mean I must download and install Server 2003 on a virtual machine I first setup in VS? That is, do I need to obtain these other OS to do my te…

Hello, I'm having a crazy issue where I set a laptop users profile to roaming so could than pull her profile to a new laptop I'm building for her however, now that I have her profile on the new machine, I removed the line in her profile so it will stop roaming. Now, for some reason I can't get the system/server to stop redirecting her desktop. That is the only folder being redirected and when I change the path in the registry it reverts back. This happens on any machine I log in to with her credentials. Help please! :) -- Regards, Jeremy Johnston I.T. Engineer CCNA - MCP

Map Drive Login Script Issue
by Guest Jason- 9 replies

Hi Ok here is the situation.... I have a .vbs login script in the user portion of group policy object that maps drives to the user account depending on the groups they are in. There's no actual problem with the script. It does what it should do however on 2 machines it simply will not map the drives. THe script is written to delete any mapped drive the user may have before mapping the drives set out by the script. On these two machines, the deletion takes place but the mapping does not. Now here is the odd part. If I run the script directly on the machine it works fine. If I log in to another machine with the same user it works fine so the pro…

Domain Browsing Issues
by Guest swu30@hotmail.com- 9 replies

We recently imaged a small (< 25) number of laptops for use in our office. Our basic setup is a routed network with servers on a 192.168.10.x network, clients on 3 diff subnets. We have a number of W2k and W2k3 servers, clients are WinXP desk and laptops. We have two AD servers doing DNS & DHCP. What we're running into is with the new laptops, they can't always browse the Microsoft Network. We have an app that we need to browse in order to setup correctly. On the same subnet I can have clients that can browse, while others (usually the new laptops, but not always) can't. They get the "xDomain is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this …

storport.sys problem after SP2
by Guest Jonathan Eshel- 9 replies
Hello, I have a problem with access to SAN drives after applying SP2 to Windows 2003 Enterprise. The HBA is an Emulex LP982 with a storport driver. After applying SP2 the server lost access to 3 out of the 4 disk drives assigned to it. Further tests revealed that LUNs translated to 7 or lower are still accessible, and only 8 and higher are no longer accessible. I am prettry sure the problem lies with the storport.sys Microsoft driver, as I tried to copy the older version (I know - not a good practice - only for troubleshooting purposes) of the file over the SP2 (and hotfix - see below) version and everything was back to normal. Moreover, I found there …

Windows 2008 in Existing Domain - Rqmts??
by Guest Diane- 9 replies

We are looking at putting in Exchange 2007 on a Windows Standard 2008 box. The existing environment is a Win2k domain with some Win2003 servers. We know the environment needs to be upgraded, however, I have had no luck finding the requirements for putting a 2008 box in an existing domain. Most information I found discusses deployment in a new 2008 domain. I have found the requirements for exchange in an existing domain. Can anyone point me to resources with information on 2008? I called MS pre-sales after much searching myself and all they could offer is they thought the domain had to be 2008. Can someone confirm if this is the case or, if it…
