When I remotely log on to a 2003SBS server and then via remote desktop to another server on that network running Server 2003 Standard I cannot use Manage Your Server nor mmc. I tried My Computer>rclick>Manage but doesn't work. Strange messages are popping out though, like "The application failed to initialize properly" or "Class not registered". Any ideas what can be the problem? yaro

I would like to access my server files from my home computer. In the past I have had a Novell server and I simply entered the IP address in my home computer's browser and was connected to my server (login required). I would like to do the same with my Windows Server 2003 but I get the "server cannot be found" message when I try this. Is there some setting I am missing? My server is set up as a DNS server.

Hi, Since our recent domain controller migration from NT to Win2k3 R2 we cannot get acess any longer to the Properties/Sharing of any files/folders even as Domain Administrator, unless we open a session locally on the machine on which we want to manage any sharing... Ex : a shared folder on computer X can only be controlled using a administrator connection open locally (either as domain administrator or local machine administrator) but cannot be controlled from a session open on any other machine connected to the network even if the folder apperas in the explorer on this machine (right clic on this folder then Properties only displays the "General" &…

I have a developer that wants to troubleshoot and issue we are having and needs to be able to see the application log on our Windows 2003 server. Is there an easy way I can grant him this access. I'm currently saving the application log and placing it in a shared folder but that's getting old and wasting a lot of our time. Thanks.

Access-based enumeration - Any fix for interactive login/terminal services?
by Guest Eric Young- 0 replies
Hello, One of the longstanding limitations I have faced with Access-based enumeration is that is does not work for interactive logins or terminal services logins when accessing the file/folder structure directly from the drives. It works great for server shares, though. I was curious if anyone has come across a "fix" for this? Or, perhaps this is addressed in Server 2008 (?). Thank you, Eric

Accessing a file share

I'm located in the U.S. I have a share on a server in a different forest in China connected to us by a high speed WAN link. When I try to access the share by name I get prompted for credentials and can log on normally and access the shares. When I try to connect by IP I get the following error message "the system cannot find message text for message number 0x in the message file for \\10.10.128.1" I saw a microsoft article that referenced smart cards and I turned off the smart card authentication on my NIC. I also saw something that referenced smart cards and Windows 2000 SP4 which involved a hotfix, but this server is server 2003. Any ideas? A…

Accessing event logs and services from a remote Server
by Guest Jupst- 0 replies
Hi, Does anyone know which permissions / settings are required to allow a user to remotely access the Services and Event Logs of a Windows Server via the MMC Snap Ins? I need to allow a group of users read-only access to this information from one central Server. I don't want the users to have Domain Admin rights. Currently, the users have read-only access to the logs when they are logged in locally, but they have no access when connecting from the MMC of another Server. Any help would be appreciated!!! Many thanks.

Accessing Shares across the Network from an ASP page
by Guest RDK- 2 replies

Folks.....I have four Windows 2000 server boxes which as far as I can tell are identical. All are in the same Win2K Domain/Active Directory. All are full patched via Microsoft Update. One of these four servers is also a web server (call it Server A). I have created an ASP web page which via the "FileSystemObject" and "GetFolder" I am attempting to open a folder on each of the four servers. It works on ServerA and ServerB, but fails with a "Error Number is 76 / Path not found" error on the other two (Server C and Server D). The web server is running with the default Anonomous User Id. All four servers have identical Security Policies and the "Shari…

Accessing shares, append domain prefix
by Guest phantomcain- 1 reply

Hello, We just migrated from NT 4.0 to 2003 AD. We have a share on a stand alone server that many people access just using their username and password. All users had local accounts. After joining this server to the domain we found that the only way to access the share is to use the prefix of the domain name before the username ("domain\username"). Does anybody know of a way in which we can still continue to just use username and password instead of domain\username and pword? Any help would be much appreciated. -- phantomcain ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phantomcain's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.ph…

Accessing users windows shares on webbrowser?
by Guest Alan- 2 replies

Hi, We are currently in the final stages of planning a move from Novell file servers to Microsoft windows file servers. Our Novell server offers the ability for users to login and see there network drive letters on a webbrowser, where they can download and upload, and perform file operations on there network files and folders. The product that allows this is called Novell NetStorage.(http://www.novell.com/products/openenterpriseserver/netstorage.html) Is there a similar comparable product to allow you to login to the windows domain, and see your network drives and windows shares on a web page? Our users will miss this feature immensly, so i need to fin…

Accessing workgroup resources from a domain, goofy issue
by Guest wwworldwideweb@gmail.com- 1 reply
- 299 views
OK, so I'm having a strange issue. I've created a new domain for some office computers (SBS 2003 and XP Pro) and moved them all into it. There are some resources that cannot be moved into the domain though. There's a printer and another Windows 2003 file server that needs to be kept in the workgroup for unrelated business reasons. When the client computers first login they can access the printer and the file shares fine. Then, after oh say 45 minutes or so they lose access to them. All the same usernames/passwords exist in both the domain and the file server. The shares and NTFS security are wide open. I tried net use persistent:yes but no luck I thought …

account lock out
by Guest pete0085- 1 reply

I am trying to confgure account lockout on the local machine (Windows and Server 2000) and it's not taking affect as I think it should. I went to run, gpedit.msc, account policies, account lockout. Lockout duration is set to 30 minutes, 5 invalid attempts, reset after 30. The local and effective setting are the same. I am using the local administrator account on these machines. We do have a gpo setting for all machines on the domain through the default domain policy. A recently internal audit indicated 4 machines have a zero lockout policy and all 4 machines are either windows 2000 or server 2000. I have tried to lock myself out and been unable to…

Account lockout in win2k3 server
by Guest cyberdude- 5 replies
I'm a relative newbie to win2k3 server and AD, so bear with me. I have 1 or 2 power users who like to stay logged in for long periods of time. What generally happens is that at some point they logoff/reboot and are then locked out. I have to then go to the server and unlock their account. I have searched technet for an answer to this, but the links/answers they had seemed aimed at password policy (using gpedit.msc) not domain policy. Nothing I've found so far addresses this particular issue. Any help would be appreciated. Tom -- Tom Zucker-Scharff Systems Administrator

Hello: Standalong Win2k3 applications server. Has both SQL 2000 and IIS server running. All latest updates applied including service packs. XP client tries to connect (more than likely through an application) which results in account lockout. Here is what I see in the event viewer-->security log: Logon Failure: Reason: Account locked out User Name: Userid1 Domain: Workstation1 Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Workstation Name: Workstation1 Caller User Name: - Caller Domain: - …

account lockout question ...
by Guest Scott W- 1 reply

Hello ... I have a domain with 7 DCs - I have an Admin who has not been able to use his account since the last time he changed his password. I've poured over NETLOGON logs and SECURITY event logs and something is running on 2 of the DCs that is locking his account. Whatever this is runs all day. His account is locked so often that he had to cerate a second account. As I was following the Troubleshooting Document for Account Lockout from Microsoft, I performed the next logical step and downloaded ALOCKOUT.DLL and installed it on one of the 2 DCs where the bad authentications were coming from. I was unable to see anything in the log file - So …

Account Operator Cant Change/Reset Passwords?
by Guest JT- 2 replies
I have two users who are configured as account operators. It appears that they cannot change or reset passwords on all AD accounts. There are some accounts they get an access denied message on. I am trying to understand what would cause this. I was under the impression account operators can reset and change passwords and unlock accounts on all accounts except system and administrator accounts (domain admin, enterprise admin, etc). It appears this way when they try and reset their own account as well through ADUC.
