Can't FTP Out On SBS 2003 Server
by Guest James B- 3 replies
Hi, We recently installed SBS 2003 Server R2 Premium. It is our only server, so it’s our PDC, Exchange server, ISA server, etc. We cannot seem to FTP out (we never allow inward FTP). I’ve checked the ISA Firewall and it appears to be set to allow outward FTP. We can log into the remote site via FTP (both from the command line and via IE), but we cannot transfer a file any location (we’ve tried several, including one we maintain). We have had no problems FTP’ing to these sites on our old Win2K server. We get an “access denied” 550 error, but nothing in the event logs tells us why we were denied. Any pointers in the right direction would b…

SBS Server 2003 Hangs When Disk Is Full
by Guest James B- 4 replies

Hi, Our SBS 2003 Server ‘hung’ while writing to a drive that didn’t have enough space for all the files being copied. A similar situation happened last week when a removable drive went bad and data was transferred to it. The server was completely unresponsive and had to be powered down. I would assume that the copy/write process should fail in the even of a full drive but not lock up the system. When this happened, the Application Event Log had 8001, 8017 & 8019 errors and the System Event Log had a 7011 error and 98 & 7036 information entries. No other events were logged between 12:49 am and when I rebooted the server at 5:33 am. A…

Time server

I have looked at kb article 816042 which describes how to configure authoritative time server in W2003 by making several registry entries. But, I also see a post which says all you have to do is issue the following commands: w32tm /config /syncfromflags:MANUAL /manualpeerlist:fqdn.of.the.time.server w32tm /config /update This seems a lot simpler but is it correct ?? Thanks

Questions: Upgrading to 2003 x64 R2 for FSRM
by Guest Barkley Bees- 1 reply

We have a File server running Server 2003 Std x64 Edition SP1 (this is the front end server where the actual data is on a SAN) and are considering to upgrade it to R2 to take advantage of the FSRM (File Server Resource Manager). So, this is a two part question post. 1. Are there any issues that others have encountered when upgrading from 2003 (if possible the version I mention above) to R2? What are the pitfalls to watch out for? Do any of the other new features of R2 cause issues for pre-existing 2003 SP1 deployed file servers? We are only really interested in the FSRM functionality of R2. We have the following apps installed: Symantec Antivirus Win64…

Roaming and local cached profiles
by Guest LJC- 4 replies

Has anyone seen this problem? I have Windows 2003 SP2 running on a few servers in terminal services mode with a GPO policy to delete locally cached profiles. The problem I am experiencing is that the user’s profiles are not getting completely deleted. The index.dat file, cookies folder and local settings folder remain on the servers. Now every time when users login they get a new user profile folder with their name appended with a new number (.001 ) What can I do to make sure the profiles get completely deleted? Thanks, Lenny

Hello, We have a windows 2003 server that happens to be the common workstation in a conference room. People are not using TS but logging in directly on that server as themselves. Often someone will lock the server CTR ALT DEL and then leave. The next person doesn't have rights to log them off and doesn't know their password. I don't want to give them all admin rights. Is there a way I can give them the ability to log eachother off of the system? Thanks "this computer is in use and has been locked" Only "or an administrator can unlock this computer"

printer default problem with one program
by Guest lenny- 1 reply
Hi, I have just changed the default printer over in an office and installed it onto the terminal services server. I then made it the default printer (right click and make default from printers page) One user who uses Sage has to keep changing the printer via the drop down menu to print to it as her machine (only in Sage) keeps defaulting to the old printer. How can I change this so that it always defaults to the new printer? Cheers

Windows & long file paths, limitations
by Guest dontinou- 1 reply

Hi List, Hoping someone's experience can help with what I can't believe is still an issue in filesystem management and what it might mean. According to Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320081/en- us) , NTFS supports paths that are much longer than 255 characters, but other applications that run on top of Windows may not. While I can't call them liars, I've repeatedly found that even Windows Explorer and Robocopy have problems copying and deleting files that have extremely long file paths. So my question is: Is there a way (third-party tool, some obscure windows trick, etc) to *make certain* that users do not create paths greater than a certain …

New Server Deployment
by Guest Chris- 1 reply

Hi Everyone, Here is the scenario: My company is going to change physical locations in about 4 months, through some miracle I've managed to convinced our president to abandon 2 out of 3 of the servers we are currently running. Getting rid of the third server is impossible because its got a 10 year old application I can't move, so I'm stuck with it. Now, the two servers I'm going to ditch are 5 years old but they are both running windows server 2003. On the shinny new servers I'm going to install server 2003 but I want transfer the licenses currently used on the old servers to the new ones. This would save me the cash on buying a new copy of serv…

Extending 2003 Server system/boot volume
by Guest Terry Hall- 5 replies

Anyone know of any tools that will allow me to extend the 2003 Server system/boot volume? I inherited a server from someone who obviously thought 10Gb was always going to be sufficient.and, of course, I'm rapidly running out of space due to service packs, etc. Neither Symantec's Partition Magic nor Paragon's Partition Manager Server Edition appear to be any good for this because my OS resides on a RAID system.

.Net Frameworks - Any Negative Impacts?
by Guest Wayne Fontes- 1 reply
I have a Windows Server 2003 development server that we use to hose a bunch of internal web servers. The box is about 4 years old but does the trick. A developer on my team wants to install .Net frameworks 3.0 and 3.5. All web services are using only 2.0 and I see no point in installing framework that we may need someday. It's true that we will eventually use more WCF and need it then, but not yet. When I shared my thoughts, I was asked "what's the harm?". To do this I didn't have a good answer. I'm a developer as well and by no means a system admin. Does anyone out there know of any negative impacts on performance or anything else when having .Net fr…

Best practice for local folder security
by Guest RichGK- 4 replies
At work they have been doing a method of security for a long time (described below) and the manager is adamant that this is the way it should be done. I suspect that it stems from the NT4 days and with everything on the network now 2000+ and the domain at 2000 functional level I don't think we need to do it so complicated. His way. A folder shared on the file & print server has a local group in it's ACL (for example "The local group"). Then in AD another group is created (e.g. "The AD group") and is added as a member of the "The Local Group" Users are then added as member to "The AD group". Now I prefer to simply add "The AD group" directly to the share…

System event notification service and SCW
by Guest Rob Nicholson- 2 replies

Nobody likes red errors in the event log. They have a habit of worrying one :-) So in a new build, we noticed the following error: DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service SENS with arguments "" in order to run the server: {D3938AB0-5B9D-11D1-8DD2-00AA004ABD5E} Doing a search on Usenet, it appears that this error is due to the SENS service been disabled - and it is indeed disabled. The posts suggest that it was SCW that disabled it and this is probably the case. The question is two fold - is there anyway to prevent this event i…

RDP stopped working

I don't know if anyone can shed any light on this. RDP stopped working on our 2003 Server. The machine is actually running SBS 2003 with sp2 (I am posting here since RDP is a more general Windows app). RDP was working on this server and then between one use and then next, several months ago it just stopped. Details: -Any client attempting to connect gets: "The client could not connect to remote computer." (Including localhost) -Remote Desktop is turned on in the Remote tab of System Properties. -Terminal Services is in Administration mode. -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP\PortNumber is set to 3389, bu…
