by Guest Fran- 0 replies

Hello! I have an AD and all the users have the desktop and My documents redirected to a shared folder in a server. This shared folder has VSS activated, so my users can recovered old version from his files. The problem is when i try to access to the Previous version tab in the properties dialog of a file stored in the Desktop orin My documents this tab is not there. I must go directly to the shared folder in the server \\server\sharedfiles\user\desktop. This is a problem for me because i'm looking for an easy way for my users to get its previous versions. Is there any way to activate this tab in files stored in the desktop and in My documents folder?…

security log filling with events 538/540/576
by Guest Brad- 1 reply

We just set up a new SBS 2003 premium server and we're getting a lot of events 538/540/576 in the security log, I just counted 140 entries in 4 minutes. We have Symantec Endpoint small business 11.0 installed on the server and MozyPro (an online backup utility). Exchange, IIS, and SQL 2005 are also running and there are 6 client PCs. I've tried shutting down the services for SQL server, Symantec, and MozyPro to see if that stopped/slowed the events and that didnt seem to have an effect. Is turning off the auditing for those events the only solution? here are some sample entries: ****************************************** Event Category: Logon/L…

Can't time sync with Windows 2003 Server Std.
by Guest Calab- 5 replies

When I double click the clock on our 2003 server (logged in as admin) and try to sync with the Internet Time tab it always fails. I've tried several NTP servers in this box with no success. I've verified that the servers I'm using are valid, as they work on my Windows XP machines. The Windows Time service is running. I also cannot get the "net time /set" command to function: C:\>net time /set Could not locate a time-server. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3912. C:\>net time /query The current SNTP value is: ntp.cpsc.ucalgary.ca time-nw.nist.gov The command completed successfully. Any idea why this isn't working?

Odd problem - Guest Account is Administrator
by Guest alec cove- 4 replies

Were trying to track down an odd problem. Our intranet box is Windows Server 2000. In the users, the guest account is listed, however when we view its properties it's listed as the Administrator. The guest account is a member of the Administrators group, which obviously seems like a problem in of itself. We're basically cleaning up after an old sys admin. Has anyone encountered this, and can you advice regarding the second point? TIA

Is there a Computer Object Type when using a WORKGROUP
by Guest KayP- 1 reply
Quick question for you. I am setting up a simple file server configured with WORKGROUP. I do not see client machines appear as computer object types like you see in AD setup. Do computer object types exist in WORKGROUP config? I was hoping to set permissions to share on server based on the client machine object and not necessarily on user level. This is because I have a service running on client machine that will be accessing the share. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Windows Server 2003 R1 Media or R2 key from R1 key
by Guest DSHJ- 1 reply

I have an old Dell server, and I have lost the original media that came with the server. I am repurposing the server for a development box, and I swiped the hard drives in the process. I am trying to find out how I can either download Server 2003 R1, purchase the original media disks, or obtain a R2 key from my R1 key. I have a valid license for Server 2003 R1, and I don't want to have to purchase another license to replace my existing, valid license. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -dshj

PerformanceCounterCategory.Create() takes 3 minutes to add a new category!! If I run PerformanceCounterCategory.Create() on my development machine it only takes a few seconds. But on remotely monitored machines it takes 3 minutes! Is this because the other machines are remotely monitored? Something else? What all can make PerformanceCounterCategory.Create() take 3 minutes to add a new category??

We are going to purchase w2k8 server here soon.. right now we are running a trial edition without hyper-v (thats what the version said when we downloaded it) but my question is why are there two versions? With and Without hyper-v? i thought hyper-v was still in beta? and thought it was going to also be in all standard / ent editions? does it cost more for it? will all versions get it when its done? what should I look for when purchasing? because I have two options, with and without, and strangely with costs less?!... I'm so confused...

SyncToy not copying files? Win2003R2 Server Std.
by Guest Calab- 7 replies

When I do a sync, all the files go where they are expected. I then delete a few files in the target folder and sync again. No files are moved. I'm using "echo", so missing files should be moved over to the target folder. I am also running this as Administrator. I've tried both SyncToy 1.4 and 2.0 beta with the same results. Left folder (source): C:\MyData Right folder (target): D:\Backups\MyData SyncToy action: Echo - This should replicate any file changes found in C:\MyData into D:\Backups\MyData. File changes in D:\Backups\MyData should NOT propagate to C:\MyData SyncToy options: - Files to include="*" - Check file contents is checked - Act…

sharing a folder
by Guest Glenn- 2 replies

I can't figure out why this isn't working. I've done it hundreds of times. I am trying to share a folder on my windows 2003 server. I set up the folder, right clicked on it and then clicked "Sharing and Security". I went through the process, added myself with full rights, added domain admins (of which I'm a member) with full rights, etc. When I go to a workstation, I'm able to click start / run and type the path to the shared file and have it show up, but it doesn't allow me to make any changes to it. What am I missing here? Thanks.

hi folks we are experiencing SERIOUS network performance issues since yesterdays MS Patches (941693, 945553, 948590 and 948581) wireless connections to our DC have required us to bounce the DC 7 times today. ALL of our nonDC Win 2003 Server R2 boxes are running fine, only the DC is experiencing this. we have been experiencing some copper wire network issues but just about every wireless developer in my company is ready to ring my neck. Anyone else experiencing this problem? I have lots of GPO errors in the event log and just about ready to call MS. Rob

Hi, I've got a problem where I receive a 1104 error in a FoxPro app that is being run in the following configuration. File Server (Server A) has a Share with a Foxpro App and data files. Users are accessing the app and data from their desktops through the network share. Other users are opening a citrix session to a Terminal Server (Server B) and then running the app from the share. Some users are using remote desktop on server (Server C) to access the application and data. Users that are logged into Server B & C sometimes receive an error message 1104. Newbie: What to purchase?
by Guest Bobby C- 6 replies

I've been tasked with determining the server hardware and software needs for a specific project. We are going to host a customer's website due to several issues. We have a long term support/development contract with them and their internal IT people have decided to discontinue supporting and servicing their Windows server. The particular web application that is hosted on this machine is in the process of having a major overhual via ASP.NET. I have a pretty good handle on the hardware requirements but I want to make sure we purchase the right Windows Server 2003 edition and have the proper licensing. The server will handle dual roles (hosting the web…

Just don't know where to start for troubleshooting with no error message. Any hints is appreciated.

Perfmon log files are not collecting data
by Guest infecticide- 0 replies

Hello, I have an interesting issue on a large Citrix farm that uses Windows Server 2003 Standard. I'm trying to capture some performance data. I've setup the logs and the counters but after I hit stop and review the logs, there is no actual metrics data in there. The date and times are there but not the actual data. I checked the event viewer, it shows that the perfmon started and is logging to the file I specified. No errors. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Re: NTVDM encountered a hard error I had the same NTVDM Hard Error reported to me for a 16 bit application under terminal services. The answer was found by using the Filemon utility. Access denied message in the Filemon log. Corrected permissions and all okay. Obviously this will not apply to everyones problem but may help someone. I am running SBS 2003 SR2. I had KAV 5.0.77 installed. I have just upgraded to Version 6 for windows files servers. Since upgrading I am experiencing strange problems on the server. When I click on search in windows explorer the right hand side of the screen is blank where I would input the items to search for. No drive selection. Nothing. Also when I open the management console to view services. If extended services is selected I see a blue square in the upper left. If I select the standard tab everything shows up. KAV for Exchange is missing configuration options as well. Nothing on the right side. General settings, nothing. When Backup exec v9.1 is op…

I have a Windows 2003 Server (SP1). It's primary role is a production database server running SQL 2000. It runs IIS and a few other custom apps, but mostly it is SQL intensive. We had some minor SQL problems and then our DBA noticed that Outlook / mapi was not working for SQL alerts. In troubleshooting the Outlook problem, I noticed that I could not view the registry key HKLM\SW\MS\Windows\CurrentVersion. When I try to expand the key, I get an error 'Cannot open CurrentVersion - Error while opening key'. I am also unable to open most of the applications under Control Panel. Has anyone seen this before? I have not rebooted the server yet. I a…

Win2003 SP2 Time Synch Mystery
by Guest Kryten- 1 reply

Hi, We have two Win2003 servers that ought not to automatically adjust for daylight savings changes, so that option was deselected for these boxes. Now we noticed that not only is automatically adjust for dst switched on but the boxes are pointing to NTP server "time.windows.com" (which they can't even ping). The only thing that we are aware of that changed on these boxes is SP2 was installed. We are pretty certain that no-one would have changed this setting without talking to us first. I'd REALLY appreciate some advice about what may have caused this config change on these boxes. Thanks, Stuart
