Win2003 SBS - Can't Sop Services
by Guest Chris- 12 replies

Using Win 2003 Small Business Server with 14 clients. When logged on to the server box as the admin, I cannot stop/restart services. Each time I try, it appears that it works (I get the messages "Stopping Service..." and the progress bar, but it then fails sto stop the service. I searched on-line but couldn't find any reference to this behavior. Is this a known issue with Win2003 SBS ? I thought that logged on as the Admin, I should be able to do that. Do I have to do something special to gain that privilege? Chris... -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

Server 2008 KMS - Error code 0xC004F038
by Guest Matt Carter- 1 reply

I am TRYING to go from Server 2003 to Server 2008, however it is frustrating. We have 12 KMS licenses, and I installed it on a brand new, formatted HP ProLiant system, x64. Standard Server 2008 X64 and it worked fine, it wanted to register with Microsoft to authenticate, no problem, KMS key entered, wait... wait.. bam, done! Excellent! Happy camper. THEN! I tried to do the same for ANOTHER system, which is NOT our KMS server, but a "client." It's the exact same hardware, it's exact in almost every way, but it's AD03 instead of AD04 (KMS) and it doesn't like the license when I try to find it. I get: Error code 0xC004F038 I went to: http://support.…

File synching tool
by Guest Joe- 1 reply

We are currently using robocopy to do a DR synch of files from one location to another (since its free). However users are complaining that file are inaccessible (locked). Is there another free tool that can be used to synch files that will cause file locks? Would FRS/DFS work? Any thought would be appreciated.

How do I restrict settings on only 1 TS server?
by Guest Noob- 0 replies

I need to remove the ability to create VPN connections off of only 1 terminal server. I know that I can create a new OU and move the TS server to there. Create a new GPO and make the change to "Network/Network Connections" section and apply it to that OU. But this is a "User Configuration" and will not apply to that server because there is no users under that OU (correct me if I am wrong on that). I can't apply the new GPO to the users OU because they make other VPN connection. So, how do I remove the ability to create VPN connections off of 1 Terminal Server? I have looked under the Local Security Settings but I am not able to find anything there. …

Hello, I am trying to capture some good I/O metrics for my Server using the Physical Disk counter. We are trying to determine whether to purchase a iSCSI San for SQL or Fiber SAN. I am not convinved that we need to spend the money on a Fiber SAN and need some proof. I need to know some counters to measure on the Phsical disk and something to compare it to. Right now I am using Avg. Disk Queue Length Avg. Disk sec/Read Avg. Disk sec/Write Disk Reads/sec Disk Writes/sec Is there anything else I need? Also, where can I compare my averages and see if I am over my averages? Kev

Windows 2003 Enterprise "RPC error occured"
by Guest QH- 1 reply

We run Exchange 2003 on a Windows 2003 cluster. I cant run the "start quota maintenance" by right clicking, as a pop box occurs stating Exchange quota service "RPC error occured". I believe this is an issue with Windows 2003 / networking rather than a problem with Exchange. Does anyone know what typically causes these kind of errors, and how I might proceed to resolve it? I checked in the Event Viewer and there aren't any notifications that seem to be relevant and correlate to the correct times. Thanks, QH

Permissions incorrectly ordered message after Robocopy
by Guest Aaron- 1 reply
I recently used Robocopy to migrate a number of file shares from one file server to another. The files were copies from a Windows 2003 SP1 server to a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server using the /COPYALL command. Everything appeared to go rather smoothly and so far everything appears to be working just fine. However, I've noticed that if you create a NEW subfolder within any of the folders that were copied over, and then use the GUI to view the security settings for that folder, you get a warning pop up saying that the permission entries are incorrectly ordered. If I click Ok, everything looks fine. If, after clicking OK on that new folder I then create a subfolde…

Offline files problem?!
by Guest UselessUser- 1 reply

Hi, I am having a little trouble with offline files. I have configured this succesfully for my user account, to make my home directory (H: drive) offline. However if anyone else logs into this PC, including local accounts, when they log out it attempts to synchronize my offline files, hence asks for my credentials.. I understand from reading the Microsoft KB articles, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811660 that the offline folder cache is per machine and not per user, but why is this happening, is this a limitation of offline folders? And how does this work for multiple users of PC's??? Eg folder redirection etc?! Running XP SP2 al…

Hardware RAID or OS RAID?
by Guest geek-y-guy- 7 replies

Hi All: I have built up a number of 1U servers that have always had some flavor of Adaptec controller chip on the mobo, allowing me to configure RAID0, 1 or 5 in BIOS, and usually I will set up a mirrored array in BIOS and walk away for a few years <g>. Call me lucky but I haven't had a single U320 SCSI or even any SATA drives fail yet...powersupplies seem to die faster than drives in 1U servers. But, the one limitation of BIOS-controlled RAID mirrors is that if a drive fails, one needs to shutdown, swap in a new drive, reboot to bios and rebuild the array. I've experimented with Server2003 mirroring on some testbed servers and haven't had any pro…

permissions inheritance problem
by Guest Jay- 1 reply

I have a folder containing several thousand files. Its Security configuration is set to 'Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object and all child objects', and in fact all its Permissions boxes are greyed out because it's inheriting them from its (great-grand) parent. Most of the files created in this folder therefore inherit permissions properly, but there are a tiny number that don't and are causing me grief. In these cases, what happens is that the user copies a file out from this folder to a temp folder on the desktop of the same computer to do some work on it. By being placed in a folder on the desktop, the file's Security…

Difference between win 2003 server sbs and the standard edition?
by Guest robix73- 6 replies

Hello to all the people. I work in an organization, We have 60 clients pc and 45 users on the lan I read in many sites that windows 2003 for Small business server can handle 75 users and device and if my organization has more users or device, the transition pack is needed. Does the "windows 2003 server standard edition" has the same limits? Other problem is that someone told me that the 2003 sbs and the 2003 standard edition come both with 5 cal and anyway with our numbers (60 pcs and 45 users) whe should buy extra cal. Is it right? Tnx to all for the answers. Roberto Gerlando
