Hello, Got a strange issue: The company where I work had no consistent naming scheme before I got here, so as part of a hardware audit I'm also renaming all of the PCs. There are a few machines who refuse to be renamed either locally, or remotely through netdom. When trying to do it remotely I get: "Unable to connect to the computer [computer-name] The error code is 51. Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows still cannot find the network path, contact your network administrator. The command failed to complete successfully." If I tr…

We often have users at branch offices bringing their laptops from home. As always these systems pose a security risk. How can I have my DHCP server NOT assign IP address to these untrusted users. OR Is there a way so that these users get a diff IP address and I can move them to a different vlan Thank you for your help.

Problem with VPN setup
by Guest Yig- 9 replies
Hi, I have used Routing and Remote Access on my Windows 2003 SP2 server to create a VPN server. It is working, but not like I was expecting. I granted permissions to a few users but when they connect, they can only access the server with the VPN, not the rest of the network. I have a firewall in front of it but it allows VPN passthru and port 1723 is forwarded to the server. What do I need to check to make sure that the network is available? Thanks!

Server 2003 Blue Screen at Logon
by Guest Rick Clapp- 9 replies

I have a Dell 700 Server running Windows 2003 SP1 and acting as a domain control on the other side of the world. The server works fine unless you attempt to logon remotely (RPD) or locally. If you do it crashes and creates a memory.dmp file. When you attempt to logon in again you get the crash message. System Failure: Stop Error 0x00000008 (0xc0000005, 0x809413c4, 0xf29098dc, 0x00000000) No module or process is shown. The system doesn't have symbols loaded so the crash analyser I have doesn't help. The right thing to do is contact MS to get assistance. My manager won't let me use one of our MS incidents because then she has to explain to her …

Our server is running Windows 2003 Server R2 Enterprise x64 Edition. Yesterday I happened to notice I can't open Windows Firewall anymore. I tried to start Windows Firewall service, but got the following error: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it's disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it But I checked that service startup type is automatic and it has hardware profile enabled. The server is running Mcafee Antivirus. But I don't think that's the problem because we have another server with exactly the same O…

Access denied on a particular file
by Guest Muzzzy- 9 replies

Hi, I'm running a Win2003 R2 server with AD (at home for file sharing); yesterday i decided to do a backup by just copying the D: drive onto a 1 TB external drive. On one file it gave "Access denied" error and so far I can't find a way to get rid of it: 1. I'm running as a user with admin rights, but still i changed ownership of the file to myself - didnt help; 2. I checked if file is locked by a process (which would be weird as this file is not used - it's a part of an old archive) - none. 3. I ran couple of different antiviruses overnight - none 4. Ran chkdsk - didn't find any problems I need to note that problem exists if i try to do anything with…

USB Port Issue Breaks Network?
by Guest Jody- 9 replies

I have two NEW Windows 2003 SBS R2 Servers. Both are exhibiting the same issue after a recent Windows Update where all the USB ports stopped working and now there is a popup in task bar that keeps displaying the message “USB Device Not Recognized.” I first noticed a problem when the previously working USB keyboard and mouse locked up. After rebooting they were not recognized and the system hung after the Windows Splash page until I unplugged ALL USB devices. I could only get back I into the server by switching to a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. This issue just developed recently and appears to have also broken network communications between the server(s…

Domain login errors
by Guest Tom- 9 replies
Hello, We recently installed a new Windows 2003 server; set it up as an additional domain controller; transferred the FSMO roles from our existing Windows 2000 DC server; demoted our old server and removed it from the network. We have approxiametly 200 clients that login to our network. 25% Vista Business and 75% XP Pro. Since the change over we are getting "The system cannot login because the domain (example) is not available.". We don't get the message on all of the clients, only on about 25 machines. I've disjoined and rejoined them to the domain with no problems. The Vista machines work with no problems, we've only seen the problem on XP. If I …

Allowing file share browsing for un-authenticated users
by Guest Nonapeptide@gmail.com- 9 replies

I have a Windows Server 2003 file server in a workgroup environment that needs to allow anyone who plugs into the network to browse its file shares without being prompted for a username and password. Ideally it would behave just like a Windows XP machine that has a file share. A simple UNC path like this: \\ServerName\ should reply with the available file shares to anyone who asks. What is the option to get this behaviour? I can't seem to find the local policy to get this to work. Thanks bunches,

LSASS Memory Issue
by Guest Chris Daley - Dwebs Ltd- 9 replies

Hi, Bit of an odd one this, we have two windows 2003 standard edition sp2 boxes, both had been up for around 30 days, then they were rebooted for the last lot of windows updates. When they came back online i started to notice the lsass process using large amounts of memory, currently after 10 days sitting at over 400mb. One box is the primary domain controller the other is a secondary, both run IIS and various other applications. I haven’t found as yet a way to reduce the amount of memory in use. Has anyone else seen this recently I did a google and a couple of people reported the same issue in July but didn’t find a solution.

Problems with SBS 2003 and Domain-Workgroup config
by Guest Teo- 9 replies

Hi guys, I have Windows Small Business 2003 Server installed on my Dell Poweredge. The server came preinstalled as a domain controller. Because I don't have that many XP professional licences, I had to run dcpromo on the server to downgrade it to a regular server without domain controller. Yesterday I was looking at the log files and I saw a SBCore error, that said that the machine was going to shut down in 60 minutes. After this I ran the configuration to bring it back to a domain controller. Everything went well and it took a long time. After the server restarted and prompted me with the login information. No domain was shown, just username and passwo…

Auto-Updates for production servers
by Guest Brian Kitt- 9 replies

Hello. I am a developer, and have been having an ongoing battle with our Network Admins, and would like advice here. They have Microsoft Windows Auto-Updates turned on for all production servers. This has caused numerous problems, because patches get applied, then cause servers to reboot, or other miscellaneous problems. I keep trying to tell them it is not a 'best practice' to have auto-updates on for production servers, but rather they should push them out with admin tools on a regular scheduled basis. They assure me they 'know what they are doing', and auto updates 'are required to prevent viruses and hackers'. They have assured me that Microsof…

Disabled Domain Controller
by Guest athos_01- 9 replies

I have a DC that I thought was dead for good, so I removed it through asdiedit. Later I find out that because of other network issues that I have, I needed to have that server back up, so was able to resurect it. It re-registered itself in DNS and is serving login requests. But, it shows in Active Directory as disabled as well as there are no NTDS settings. Can this be fixed? If I log into that particular DC, it's Sites and Settings have the the NTDS settings, as it has never received replication from the other servers that it is gone. So, two questions, can I enable the DC machine account somehow? and Is there somehow of repairing the NTDS settings? Than…

Hi, A drive on a Windows 2003 server is compressed and a user is reading and writing files on that drive over the LAN from his desktop computer. Which computer is doing the processing associated with compressing and decompressing the data? Is it the server, or the user's desktop machine? Thanks, Aengus.

Help! Reinstalling Windows Server 2003 Enterprise from CD on new 320 GB disk using 80 GB partition. Get stopcd Page_Fault_In_NonPaged_Area 0x00000050 (0xA24960F4, 0x0, 0x80865DAB, 0x0). Had been previously installed on a 40 GB drive and then SP1 and SP2 subsequently applied and ran ok until other blue screens occurred. That's when I replaced the hard disk. BIOS had been updated some time ago without issue. Any ideas? Can contact me at mark@planosuperbowl.com. Thanks. -- Mark
