Copying large quantity of files taking forever
by Guest SwitchKat- 6 replies
Hi, I wanted to throw this question out because after losing over a week of productivity, I'm not sure where else to turn. Here's my issue. We're trying to restore a file repository for a project that has just under 2 million files. We've tried restoring from tape, copying from another Windows server and even moving from another Windows server. The problem we run into in every case is that the file copy to the new system takes off fast and we can see file transfer rates start out copying 1000's of files per second, but over time it always slows down to a crawl and we end up where we are now. We are currently transferring one file every few minutes. …

Cant install any software from a netwwork drive.
by Guest Wajahat Khan- 10 replies

I have a windows server 2003 R3 SP2 domain setup with all workstations running the same OS and SP level. I cant install software on any of the workstations when mapped to a network drive. I am logged in as the domain admin and as such would think that I would be able to install software on the workstation. If I copy the files locally then I can perform the software install. Is there a new policy in winsvr2k3SP2 tha prevents running executables from a remote netwrok drive? Thanks

From PPTP to L2TP/IPsec using RRAS - How?
by Guest Fox1977- 8 replies

Hi folks, I need a bit of help from all of the experts on here. I need to get a VPN setup for a teleworker that is going to be working from home. Managed to get so far but now a bit stuck. Here's the setup: Windows 2003 server running RRAS in our office, Draytek 2800 router. RRAS is setup and configured for PPTP access using port forwarding 1723 on the router to the server. This works fine and it is pretty stable. I am trying to upgrade the VPN to L2TP/Ipsec in order to improve security. The teleworker is trying to access my network using a 3g modem from Switzerland and it looks like it is blocked. The provider says they support IPSEC (Does this soun…

Antivirus Solutions

We're currently running SAV Corporate 10 on our 2003/XP network and really don't want to shell out the $1500 for new 50 new licenses. Symantec has become increasing more bloated with each new version to the point where, if I wanted to upgrade to Endpoint Protection 11, I'd need to upgrade my workstations, and that's not going to happen any time soon. I've been looking into some alternate solutions and wanted some opinions on NOD32. AVComparatives.org shows it has a high detection rate and there seems to be a lot of praise coming from IT admins in various forums. I've installed the trial and like it so far. Uses much less resources than SAV. Anyone h…

I'm running low on disk space on my C: drive which I typically reserve for the OS only. This server is our terminal server, and twice we've been below 200MB available. Do you know what the directory 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3' is and why it's so big? My other servers have the same directory, but it's less than 300MB. Thanks!

folder redirection for 1 out of 70 users is not working... why?
by Guest techtedg@kc.rr.com- 9 replies
We have server 2003 and all xp sp2, roaming profiles and user home directories. Inside our main gpo for all users i have configured folder redirection for my documents using the setting "redirect to user's home directory". This works great since the "u:" drive on all profiles is now the same as the my documents location and therefore all my doc links (on desktop and in apps) goes to the same place. We have had this working for over a year now, last week one of the user's my documents folder started not redirecting. When you right click my documents on the desktop it says "c:\documents and settings\username\my docs" instead of the UNC path like everyone els…

by Guest Matthew Millers- 6 replies

Hi, I suspect that the IPv6 adaptors are affecting one of our clients Exchange RPC-HTTP. I have uninstalled IPv6 but the following interfaces are still being displayed: Tunnel adapter 6to4 Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Tunnel adapter Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface If I run the command "netsh interface ipv6 show interface", it returns "IPv6 is not installed" Any ideas how I can force remove these interfaces? Thanks Matthew

Hi There, We have a HP Class-C Chassis with 4 Blade servers, all running windows server 2003. Two of these servers are clustered in Active Passive mode. This cluster is connected to HP EVA3000 SAN array and the network interface of the cluster connects to Cisco 3750 stack. For the past number of months we have been having issues where the clients, running windows XP lose their network drives and after a pause of approx 10-15 seconds reconnect and in many cases a reboot of the workstation is required. We have performed a number of test to isolate the root casue of the issue. The network was fully checked and ruled out as the casue. Packet capture did …

Startup Scripts

Hi, I'm using a startup script to copy a folder with a startmenu from a server to a local machine. I've been using robocopy, and its creating the folder structure but not the links. What am I doing wrong? The weird thing is, when I run the script from the command-line when logged in it works correctly, therefore I'm thinking its a permission problem. I tried granting everyone read-only permissions, but it didn't solve the issue. The command I'm using: robocopy /e /zb /copyall /XO \\thssvr01\startmenu$\1015vlaptop c:\startmenu Any ideas, Anyone? Thanks.

Scheduled backups fail to start
by Guest Frances Butcher- 10 replies

We have been using Win Backup on Win Svr 2003 for at least 18months now and suddenly it is refusing to work. If I run a manual backup it backs up no problem. However the scheduled backups do not start. No log is generated in the backup GUI and the very few messages which appear in the event viewer do not seem applicable. I have rebooted the server and also deleted and recreated all the scheduled tasks and media but it has made no difference. - The only clue I have is that if I select properties on any of the tasks then the following error appears: >General page initialization failed. The specific error is: 0x80090016:keyset does not exist. An error has o…

LDAP and surfing
by Guest ki4zji- 8 replies

Here's the problem... One of our installations is having what appears to be intermittent problems with internet surfing download speeds. We have replaced the DSL modem and thoroughly tested all the associated LAN hardware. The DSL provider has now responded saying: "I have taken a further look and it seems that your server (LAN IP: 192.168.0.2) seems to be using something called "LDAP" which tries to verify certain information before allowing your PC to bring up that webpage. This LDAP in your server is not recognizing certain pages correctly. I would suggest the following:" The address x.x.x.2 is, in fact, our windows 2003 server, however I fail to see h…

Server Upgrade

I'm replacing a Dell poweredge sc420 that I have used for a server for the past year and a half. I don't have a lot of experience with servers, the SC420 was my first attempt at running SBS2003. I want to make sure that I'm purchasing something that will give me much better performance as well as reliability. My old machine has 2 80gb sata drives on a raid 1. Here is a description of the new machine. It's a poweredge 2900 with a Quad Core Xeon Processor E53352x4MB Cache, 2.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB, I chose 4GB 667MHz (4X1GB), Dual Ranked Fully Buffered DIMMs vs 8x512. I don't know if I was better off with the single ranked 512 or the dual ranked 1gb. I ch…

System Won't Boot
by Guest Matthew White- 4 replies

Hi Everyone, I used Paragon Partition Manager to redistribute free space from my D: to my C: system partition. The drives were a dynamic set of 2 disks. Everything appeared to go along fine, but now the system won't boot. I am getting a stop error (stop 0x0000007b), which I believe to be that the system can't find the boot partition. When I boot into the recovery console, I can see all the data, so there is nothing wrong with the disks. How do I set the system straight so that it knows how to boot up? I am running a chkdsk now. The support group from Paragon does not open for another 8 hours, so I was hoping someone could help out. Regards, …

Have my ntbackup jobs configured to run twice a day to backup exchange database files and server system state data. Get an error message in the event log: NTBackup error: 'The operation failed. Consult the Backup Report for more details.' Checked the backup log report and it states as follows: Backup Status The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found. What concerns me is I know the scheduled task and backup job is configured properly because when I select and run the scheduled task job from the control panel manually (clicking on it to run), it goes smoothly without a hitch.
