by Guest Vishal- 1 reply

Hi, I have a general question. At the moment I am in Group Policy Management console in windows 2003. I noticed that their is a way to back up the GPO's. Now as part of our regular back schedule we only backup system state of the domain controller. 1) Does that backup cover GPO's? 2) In what instances would one use the backup option that is available in Group Policy Management console thanks

Question Insufficient system resources on 64-bit Windows RSS Sear
by Guest CrashHunter- 0 replies

One of our customers has a 64-bit Windows 2003 Ent.SP2 domain controller on a VMWare Esx server. The VM has 1 CPU and 1 GB RAM allocated (adding up to 4 GB did not make a difference). Our application tries to dump the registry hives to files and it gets the 1450 error ("insufficient system resources...") on the SOFTWARE hive. The hive is not extremely big (exporting it from registry editor results in a ~75MB file). I have created a very basic sample application that just opens the registry key and calls the RegSaveKey API and we get the same error. Strangely, the "reg.exe" tool, which I would expect to use the same APIs, is successful and it results in a …

Windows Event Subscription on Windows 2008
by Guest paulreims@gmail.com- 3 replies

Hello, I have a server installed in Windows Server 2008. This machine should be used to do "event log subscription" on Windows 2003 servers to collect logs from these servers and centralize them. I did the "winrm quickconfig" on the 2008 server which worked fine. When I do now the subscription and test it, I get an message that WINRM client cannot complete the operation because the remote system is not reachable..... My question is now if it is possible to collect events from a Windows 2003 server(that my Windows 2008 machine collects the events from a Windows 2003 client) via WinRM? If yes, what do I have to change on the WIndows 2003 server to allow the Win…

How can I confirm I can access an NTP server
by Guest Guest- 5 replies

Greetings, I really would like to see a 593 event showing up in the system log, that to me would be positive confirmation. I have bounced the time service, done a w32tm -s (it's a 2000 box), and the /querysntp returns the correct value. My 11 warnings have stopped, but I would feel better if I got some "positive feedback" so I know the new time server is actually working for these servers. On one of my servers, I got a 593 shortly after bouncing the service, and this one has the Update Rollup for SP4 installed, the other two servers don't and they don't get the 593 after bouncing the services. I don't know if this make's a difference. If anyone has …

64-bit for VM's?
by Guest soup_or_power@yahoo.com- 2 replies

We are going to host 3 VM's on a 64GB server. The host OS is going to be some version of Windows. Does it have to be a 64-bit OS like Win2k3? Also: if 64-bit Win2k3 is used as host, do the VM's have to be 64-bit OS as well? Is the RAM going to be partitioned into 2 GB for each VM? Thanks for your help.

Windows 2003 server memory limit
by Guest Phil Loper- 7 replies

Is there a 4MB memory limit on Windows 2003 server? I just upgraded a Dell PE 2850 that had 1GB RAM to 9GB and all the memory shows up in BIOS, but in Windows it only shows 4GB. Is there something that needs to be changed in Windows to see all the RAM? TIA.

Syslog server & parse/search/alert ability
by Guest KDawg44- 0 replies

Hi, I need to get a syslog server up on a windows server that is going to take syslog messages from windows servers & about 100 routers. I am looking at several options but would like to see what others may have used. One of the options I am looking at is Splunk and was wondering if anyone could comment on this, or if anyone had used ManageEngine's EventLog Analyzer. Thanks for any help, opinions, and advice. Replication
by Guest Chris- 1 reply

Hi, I have two servers...one in a domain'd network, and one on a workgroup. I have tried using DFS and the files / folders do transfer correctly. However, when I access the folder locally on the source server I cannot access it, i.e. c:\temp is not accessible. Also, a random folder was created with a folder name of DFS01-02938 etc which contained the same data. DFS doesnt seem to be the best way to do this, so what other ways of replicating files/folders from one server to another on different networks without having to purchase anything extra? Thanks Chris

I'm setting up my home PC to be a website. It's running WinPro XP SP2 and IIS 5.1 as the web server. My question is how do I configure the firewall to allow "anyone" to get to my site yet still keep a level of protection or do I have to take down the firewall completely? Thanks, Fred

Installing an external disk in a Windows Server 2003
by Guest John- 7 replies

Hi The local disk of the server (Microsoft Server 2003 Standard Edition), we use in the office is full and the data grow constantly. I think of installing a new external disk (WD My Book Studio Edition II - http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=410) and put the data on it. However I do not know if the connection between the server and the external disk (USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800 or eSATA) is stable. The access on those data from other computers I want to be reliable. Will I have problem with the users’ permissions? Thanks a lot.
