So, anyone has met that problem or know how to solve it please help me. It's urgent for me. Thanks in advance. Yours sincerely, Susan

Moving data between servers?
by Guest Brian McGrew- 6 replies

Hello again, Over the weekend I tried to move tons of data from one server to the other. The source server is a DC and I was logged in as the Administrator for the domain. I have two problems I hope someone can help me with! 1) I got permission denied on quite a few files. Why??? I'm the domain administrator and this account owns all the folders, why would I get permission denied??? 2) The destination copy had all the permissions screwed up, like no permissions were preserved at all. How do I do a move and preserve the ownership and permissions??? Is there a data migration utility that I should be looking at as opposed to the standard copy? …

Access denied on Iomega Network drive in Windows 2003 R2
by Guest Bruce Wallace- 0 replies
We have an Iomega 250Gbyte network hard drive that was used to back up files from a Windows 2000 server that has failed. This drive was available to all users on our network. We have installed a new server running Windows 2003 Standard Edition 32 bit with no access controls specifically invoked. The Iomega drive can be found and mapped in Windows Explorer but none of the folders or files on it can be seen or accessed. Any attempt to create a new folder, for instance, gives 'Access is Denied'. We have added now a second (new) Iomega 250 Gbyte drive that gives the same result. These drives are also now no longer accessible by other users on the network, whi…

Hi, I have a new 2008 Server standard license agreement. According to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/downgrade-rights.aspx I can downgrade to 2003 R2 Server standard but when I look up my license keys I only have one key listed. How do I get a 2003 key? (e.g. When I order Office 2007 there are three keys listed and when I ordered 2003 server there were 4 keys listed) Thanks

We have a Windows 2003 server setup for file sharing. We have internal and external users accessing this server. We have more external users accessing this server than internal users. We put this server in the DMZ. Is there a way to secure this server so that hackers won't be able to get to it? Thanks. Diane

RE: Server 2008 install-generic activation error

RE: Server 2008 install-generic activation error I also posted a note to the vista general discussion group about a File Transfer Manager download problem. The install/activation problem described here is from Server 2008 downloaded from Technet > TechCenters > Resources for IT Professionals > Downloads. After further digging, it looks like I tried to use a TechNet Subcriber product key on a trial version of Server 2008. My only real problem is getting File Transfer Manager to work on Vista. Windows Server 2003 configuration question
by Guest Anne- 6 replies
The hard drive crashed on the server of one of my clients and upon reinstallation, the IT person did not re-create the domain because it was too much work and he wants to wait until Small Business Server 2008 is out to reconfigure the server. Now the server is in a different workgroup than the workstations and it is creating big problems with permission and access, but I am running into a wall trying to get him to change it. His reasoning for making the change from a domain to a workgroup was that if he configured the server as domain again, he would have to redo all the workstations. Am I wrong in assuming that if he had configured the new hard drive wi…

Best way to copy user's home areas onto a new drive
by Guest DHamer- 6 replies
We have just purchased a new faster storage systen, and need to move files for the user's home areas onto it. Current we have SERVER1 connected to a dell storage array which only has one bank populated. The array is shared as \\server1\home So each user's home area is set as \\server1\home\username What we need to do is move all the users home areas onto a new set of faster drives going into the same unit (i.e the same server). Firstly, how could I copy the files accross and retain all the ownerships and permissions? Bearing in mind we are talking about 1TB + of data so I dont want to have to keep on confirming. Secondly, once the copy job is done, wo…

Multiple logoffs required
by Guest steve_t- 4 replies

I have a small network (2 DCs running Server 2003, 10 XP workstations). Recently, a few people have had to select the Log off option twice in order to actually log off. The first time, they are prompted w/the standard "Are you sure you want to log off?" question, but even when clicking Yes, they stay logged in. They have to do the process a second time in order to successfully log off. This doesn't happen with every user, but for the ones who are affected, it happens every time. TIA for any ideas.

Edition of Server 2003?
by Guest David Walker- 2 replies
I just did a test install of Windows server 2003 on a system that I'm going to upgrade (soon) from 2000 server to 2003 server. I did a clean install into a new partition. The CD say "Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition". There is Disc 1 and Disc 2. Disc 1 has a part number of X11-73011. When I installed the software and the system rebooted, Control Panel/System (along with the boot splash screen) tell me that I have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Is this a known confusion of the versions? I searched Google but didn't find anything relevant. If Control Panel/System tells me that I have Enterprise Edition, is this the version I r…

EventLog Mixed
by Guest Sajid- 5 replies

We are using Windows Server 2003 SP1, last week we had a power outage, due to which server was re-booted without proper shut down. After getting up the server eventlog is all mixed up, that is all three Application, System and Security logs are coming in all three (if you click on Application, System and Security logs are shown as well, same with the other two). I checked the Log file names they are pointing to, and it seems to be right, Application eventlog is pointing to AppEvent.Evt, the other two to SecEvent.Evt and SysEvent.Evt respectively. We want to know what might've happened that has caused this and what can we do repair it, without affecting …

Problem Reading File when Name contains character numbers 63 ("?"),164, 186, 243, 248 I am trying to access all of the files in a directory, using $a=opendir($dir) ; while ($file=readdir($a)) and $b=file_get_contents($dir."/".$file). However, when $file contains characters 63 ("?"), 164, 186, 243 or 248 $b is "". I tried substituting each of the characters chr(0 to 255) for a single "?" in file names but none of the resulting names created a value for $b other than "". How do I read these file contents? P -

How can I give an employee a mailbox without at least making him a user
by Guest OscarVogel- 8 replies
We have a temporary employee starting next Monday. He will need an email account, but it's important that he NOT have access to any of the shares on the servers. My problem is that there are a lot of shares that are accessable to "Everyone". If I make him a "domain user" he'll be in the "Everyone". And I'd rather not "Deny" his account access to each of the shares. So, is there some way that I can give him an email account with a mailbox (Exchange 2003 on a SBS 2003 server), without making him a Domain User? Thanks

Inactivate a dynamic partition?
by Guest David Walker- 2 replies
How do you inactivate a dynamic partition? The Diskpart program only works on basic disks. Also, how do you tell which partition(s) are marked Active? I don't see that info in Disk Management snap-in. This question applies to Windows server 2003 (and Windows Server 2000, which I am upgrading from). Second, the one time I booted from a floppy (just as an experiment), and then told the boot loader to load the second partition on disk 0, then looked at Disk Management: Disk Management still told me that the FIRST partition on disk 0 was the "system" volume. The second partition was marked Boot. I can't find exactly what "system" means, or why the…

Installing Server 2003 x64 From MSDN Disk
by Guest ServerHelp!- 2 replies

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I have been completely unsucessful in trying to get a hold of Microsoft. I am trying to install a Dell Server using my MSDN disks. I have been trying to install the 64 bit OS for Server 2003. When the server boots up, it only gives me the option of the 32 bit OS options, not 64bit. I contacted Dell to ensure the system is 64bit and it is. Does anyone know how to get the 64 bit option installed? I have tried burning just Server 2003 x64 to a CD but the system doesn't boot from CD either. It keeps saying no OS found. Any help would be greately appreciated!
