Non-MS IM solution in AD environment w/Server 2003
by Guest Isaac Grover- 0 replies

Good morning from Wisconsin, I am looking to implement simple instant messaging (contact list and messaging required, file transfer optional) in an Active Directory environment with Windows Server 2003 at the core and 15 Windows XP Pro clients at the edge. As I know that sometimes non-MS solutions are overall better, I have been looking at two options: LanTalk.NET from Cezeo (http:// http://www.cezeo.com/) and LanToucher Messenger from VitalSoundLab (http:// http://www.vitalsoundlab.com/). So, I am open to opinions of the two products above, and also exploring other available options. Let me know what you have successfully used in your environments. T…

Server 2008 installation problems
by Guest Mike- 2 replies

Folks, I'm having trouble installing Server 2008. I have a Dell PE 600SC with 2-80 Gb hard drives and I'm trying to install Server 2008. I had Server 2003 installed on this machine, but wanted to do a clean install, so when I inserted the 2008 DVD and it came up to the partition table for the drives, I told it to delete the partitions, which it did. However, while it has a "New" button, I presume for creating a new partition, it is greyed out and not available to me. It did let me format the drives. All I can do is select one of the drives and hit "next". It says it is starting to install then gives the error "Windows could not prepare the partiti…

Recently we had to reboot all servers in our computer room for maintenance, ever since most laptops are getting an error about duplicate name found when they have both wired and wireless LAN turned on. Once wireless radio is turned off, then it works fine. Any ideas what the issue might be? Thanks.

Folder Redirection inconsistent

Short and sweet. This is a Windows 2003 domain running in mixed mode. Folder redirection has been in place for a couple of years now and for the most part works beautifully. On a couple of occasions we have run into the following problem. A user will log onto a desktop that they have not logged onto before and while they expect for their desktop and My Documents folder to be synched none of the files form the server are pushed to the new machine. Another user can come right behind them, log in to the new system and all their files show up. Please help me. -- cmccleary72 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ cmccleary72's …

recommended boot partition size...

hello guys, I'm about to deploy a new HP DL 585 server with windows server 2003 enterprise edition. It's actually two of them that will be used as a cluster for sql services. the two servers have three hard disks with 74 gb each. what I want to do is use raid 1+0 so that I have two hard disks mirrored and a spare one. The other partitions (quorum and applications) will come from our san (so no need to use the local hard disks for other partitions other than the boot one). Is it ok to create a single boot partition of 74 gb ? is that too big for some reasons ? or is it ok ? what do you think ? thanks for your opinion... zz

Random Alleged Disk Corruption
by Guest Michael O- 0 replies

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 box with three ATA disks and one USB drive (also one ATA CD-ROM). It is an Active Directory controller as well as a file share machine. Randomly, usually months apart, it will give ntfs errors in the system log on one or more of the drives. All drives have been affected, no files have ever been lost. Sometimes, there will be a warning in the system tray about a corrupt file, this is the only machine I've ever witnessed a warning in the system tray for file corruption on. Sometimes, my anti-virus software will begin to crash at this time also. The only other symptom I've noticed is that folders that have not been modified get new …

Hello there, My question is when I reboot a Windows 2K3 64 bit server the time is rolled back six hours. This server is running as a virtual machine on an VMware ESX 3.5 Sever. The VMware tools are installed on instance but the option to time sync with the ESX server is disabled. Also the Windows O/S is not set to sync with any time source. Any ideas on what could be causing this and a solution to the cause? Thanks!

I need to see a listing of all the NTFS and Share settings on a server. The dirs/subdirs are very deep. Is there a way to pipe this info from a command line to a text file and then print it? Alternative is to do from GUI and this would be very/ver tedious.....
