Greetings, I have one medium AD domain enviornment with 2 DCs , but I want a small portion of my domain computer members to recieve their time from a different NTP source. Is this possible? Basic Q's: 1. Are all members of the domain automatically synced with the DC's? 2. Do all computers have to be synced up with the DC's time to login to the domain? Please advise, thanks a million :)

Firstly.... the server: POWEREDGE 2800 - XEON 3.2GHZ/2MB 800FSB 4GB SINGLE RANK DDR2 MEMORY (4X1GB) ADDITIONAL XEON 3.2GHZ/2MB 800FSB, CACHE ADAPTEC SCSI 39160 CONTROLLER CARD(N) PERC 4/DC DUAL CHANNEL RAID CARD, 128MB Hooked upto this is a Powervault Drive Array housing 6 drives (all 15k) as a raid 5 array The server is acting as the storage for user's home area. We have around 10,000 users (students), but only around 400 logged on at any one time. Basically the server is quite often comming to a standstill. The users cant login, the ones logged in cannot do anything. We have run some performance monitoring, and have tried to find out the problem…

Rename Admininistrator Account and Change Password
by Guest dm3281- 3 replies

Hello -- I have about 70+ Windows 2003 Servers and 100 Windows XP desktops in my enterprise environment. We recently demoted one of our IT admins and would like to change the admin name on all our machines and its password. Does anyone know of good free or commercial tools that allow for this? I cannot stand the thought of having to remote into all machines every time someone leaves our department -- or to simply change the local admin accounts for workstations.

Server 2008 write permissions for web sites
by Guest Angel de la Noche- 0 replies

I am moving several web sites from a 2003 to a 2008 server. These sites use an Access 2000 database file to store information, and also permit uploading image files. On the old server I just gave the IUSR_ and NETWORK users modify permissions to the specified folders and it worked. With 2008 I have had to give the "everyone" account modify permissions to the folders in order to be able to write to the db or upload files. Even then, for some sites, it is still not working. The sites are all written using classic ASP. What is the correct account and permissions that need to be given write access to the db and files folders?

Hello, If this is not the right user group please point me to the right one. I moved my .Net 1.1 application to Windows 2008 Server and it only works for Administrators and not regular users. It has to do with access to Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.ExceptionManagement I think When we installed Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.ExceptionManagement we did this for everyone and not the Admins only. The error message I am getting is: myApplication.exe Has Stopped working. Description: Stopped working Problem signature: Problem Event Name: CLR20r3 Problem Signature 01: myApplication.exe Problem Signature 02: 2.1.0.0 Problem Signature 03: 47755e77 Problem Si…

I am getting the following message this server and this server has been on the domain for a while and was able to log in usually. But now its getting this message Windows cannot connect to the domain either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. If this message continues to appear contact your System Administrator for assistance. other machines can log in fine. Any idea why? This happened to a few other machines yesterday.

Auto Shutdown and Restart
by Guest John- 4 replies

Planning to schedule my Windows Server 2003 to auto shutdown and restart (just one time) during non business hour. I'm going to use Task Scheduler to accomplish this. I've never done it before so I have a question: what is the command? C:\Windows\System32\Shutdown.exe -r is that sufficient? Do I need to provide reason for restart? Credentials to run the command? Thanks.

"Password Complexity" -bitch to remove.
by Guest Anteaus- 3 replies
One of the things I detest about 2003-on Server is that "Password Complexity" policy which is forced upon you as soon as you load the AD. People who put this policy on obviously hadn't got their brains in-gear that day, as they failed to consider the problems it causes when importing users from an existing server, or when installing a server on a site which ALREADY has a different password policy in-force, and with which this conflicts. Perhaps the daftest aspect is that despite this piece of paranoia there is by default no password-lockout policy, allowing an intruder an infinite number of tries at a password. I would have thought that a default loc…

IT SLA's?
by Guest dm3281- 0 replies
Hi -- I know this might not be the correct foum, but I was hoping I could get some help. I need to create an SLA for our server environment primarily for our internal departments. Basically, we receive frequent requests to build new servers that may or may not require hardware purchases, software purchases, etc., in addition to laptop deployments etc. Typically, the turnaround is weeks to months depending on the nature of the request. To provide a baseline and guidinance to everyone, I wanted to set the expections so everyone knew that a particular request would take at least x number of days/weeks/months for turnaround. Most of the requests I ge…

Windows server 2008 - What theres no tape backup!
by Guest w-cubed- 8 replies
Yes what a shock I sold a new Windpows Server 2008 with a tape unit in it. Only to find no NTBACKUP and the new Backup product just does not do Tape. I have not been seeing this huge change in any press releases I have hunted around and I cannot find an affordable or practical replacement for the LTO4 tape backup unit. What else streams at 120MB/s and stores 1.6TB of data? It needs to be at under $200 a unit and I need at least 30 backup devices to support the backup program policy in place. I am for the first time in 28 years in the computer industry having to source a third party backup tool to backup a server. This is wrong very wrong! I h…

Windows 2003 - Move from single drive to mirrored drives..
by Guest newsqlman- 0 replies

I had a quick question as I haven't found an easy or great way to do this yet. I want to take an existing Windows 2003 server install that is on a single hard drive and make it a mirrored install. Is there a way to do this without reloading the system? I want to add a second drive of the same size and just mirror it with the currently installed drive if possible. THanks for any ideas in advance.

I set the following schedule in my program: 10:00 - 12:00 : state1 12:00 - 13:00 : state2 13:00 - 15:00 : state3 When I change the date and the tine in Windows 2003, my program changes it's state from state1 to state2 and after that to state3. by Guest Leo- 6 replies

I am not able to remove the read-only settings for folders created under the d: partition. I am trying to create a shared folder in which network users can create and share documents. However, network users are not able to save into the sahred folder even though I have given full access to 'Everyone', or even if I give full access to a specific user. I have tried modifying the registry and using the attrib command and the read-only setting still has not changed. Please provide assistance as to how to remove the read-only access.

Folder Redirection
by Guest Julian- 2 replies
Hi I've managed to do something a bit silly! Basically I redirected everyone's folders (My Documents, Appplication Data, etc) to a new location based on the user profile (i.e. \\server\%username%\My Documents, etc). Unfortunately the administrator account (which is renamed) was also included and I am having trouble logging on (it takes an age and gives an error). How can I exclude the administrator account from the re-direction without too much disruption? Cheers, Julian

NetBIOS name doesn't work when joining a workstation to domain
by Guest Umma Gumma- 8 replies
I've done a few searches in the past on this and have found the opposite of the problem I'm having: When I attempt to join an XP SP2 workstation to our domain using its NetBIOS name, the process times out and a message comes up. Something to the effect of the domain cannot be located. If I use the FQDN instead, the domain can be contacted and I get prompted for the credentials to join the workstation. This is also a FQDN for a child domain: child.parent.com Not sure if it makes a difference or not but I'm throwing in as many details as possible. If anyone has run into this problem and has found a solution or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate i…

Plug and Play and Server Service Error
by Guest E2 Services- 1 reply

2 new errors have started appearing on my server the last couple of days. Nothing has changed but the 2 errors are: 1) Event ID: 2510 Server Service (The server service was unable to map error code 998) - on restart 2) Event ID: 257 PlugPlayManager Service (Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE") - occurs once a day and requires a restart to clear. This is on a Windows 2003 R2 Standard SP2. Internet searches seem to indicate a Symantec product causing problem and there is Symantec Endpoint client installed. Anyone else run across this kind of problem?

Remote Logon
by Guest Laura- 1 reply

I created a user in AD and made them a member of the "Remote Desktop Users" and also added them into the servers remote admin tab. I ran secpol.msc and added the user and remote desktop users group into the security policy to allow remote logons and allow remote logon using terminal services. Now the user can logon but as soon as I hit enter I receive a message about the user needing administrative rights/privileges???? Does a user have to be admin?? I just want them to run a program on the server and logoff, I don't want to give them admin rights, I gave them backup operators and account operators because all they are doing is running a ghostcast serve…
