we just converted our windows 2003 file server over to a vmware server. since that time I have had issues with users accessing certain folders. I even have issues such as certain folders in our Public folder are denied, while others are accessible, even though the Public folder itself is set to be accessible to all. other people lost access to their my documents, even though all rights appeared to be correct. that is appeared. the only errors I can find are a lot of pre-authentication errors such as the ones below. any hints where to look next? Pre-authentication failed: User Name: simpson User ID: mydom…

Hi, When I try to get to the Firewall settings on my Server 2003 system, I always get the following message... "Windows Firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the network address translation component (Ipnat.sys)" Any ideas what this could be? Thanks! Frank

Error running scheduled task, Windows Server 2008
by Guest Joe Grover- 4 replies

I am setting up a new fileserver on a Windows Server Standard 2008 machine. The machine is currently running in evaluation mode. I installed it on 9/11/2008. On our existing fileserver we have a data replication script that copies data from remote office fileshares to the local system for backup every night. I have copied the script to the new fileserver, making one change to the path (the target for copied files is on the C: drive instead of the D: drive now). Here is the script: robocopy \\aa-dc1.company.local\share c:\datamirrors\AA /R:3 /MIR > AA.Log robocopy \\gr-dc1.company.local\share c:\datamirrors\GR /R:3 /MIR > GR.Log robocopy \\tc-1…

Hello, Just making sure I am not confused. I have created shortcuts to a few departments share and placed it on a common share called --> \\fs1\depts$. The departments shares have been locked down (shares/security) and only allowed users of that department access. On the shortcuts created, I also locked down to allow only people that have access to the shares. shortcut security set ------------------- * Read & execute * Read share security ----------------- * Read & execute * List Folder Contents * Read Question: the shortcut securites set are independent of actual securities set on the shares? Just making sure. I have t…

DHCP Question
by Guest Glenn- 2 replies
If this isn't the appropriate newsgroup, please let me know which one is. I have a Windows 2003 Server that I use as a DHCP (amongst its other roles). The computers in all departments get their IP addresses from it. I'm looking to change that a bit. I want each department to have its own pool of IP addresses available. I can setup my switches so that each is on its own VLAN. I'm just not sure how to setup the DHCP server so that the scopes are tied to a particular VLAN when the server itself only has one connection to the switch. Hopefully I'm clear here with what I want to do..if not please ask. Thanks.

how to stop spoolsv.exe creating ppr###.tmp files or deleting themafter the process closes

how to stop spoolsv.exe creating ppr###.tmp files or deleting themafter the process closes For some reason the spoolsv.exe files is creating tmp files whenever we print via the file server. however the files are never deleted which leads to the c drive filling up over time. Anyone have any ideas on how to change this. I tried changing the spooler temp directory under printer an faxes server properties many with no luck. Adter using FileMon I was able to see that spoolsv.exe was responsible for creating the file but never deletes them. C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

Copying large quantity of files taking forever
by Guest SwitchKat- 6 replies

Hi, I wanted to throw this question out because after losing over a week of productivity, I'm not sure where else to turn. Here's my issue. We're trying to restore a file repository for a project that has just under 2 million files. We've tried restoring from tape, copying from another Windows server and even moving from another Windows server. The problem we run into in every case is that the file copy to the new system takes off fast and we can see file transfer rates start out copying 1000's of files per second, but over time it always slows down to a crawl and we end up where we are now. We are currently transferring one file every few minutes. …

Server 2003 to 2008 Upgrade Question Regarding Printers
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 2 replies

I just did an in place upgrade of 2003 Standard 64 Bit to 2008 64 Bit. On 2003 I had about 15 printer shares. After the upgrade I have zero printer shares. Is this by design or a bug? Why would an in place upgrade eat printer shares and is there any way to recover them other than to rebuild them? Thanks, Dan

Server 2008 - Installing non-TS CALs
by Guest jebtech- 4 replies

Potentially silly question, but I haven't seen this addressed. I have 250 CALs purchased. Where do I tell Server 2008 that I have these CALs? These aren't for Terminal Services, just for people on my internal network to access the server. My 2003 Server has an applet off the Control Panel, I don't see the same thing in 2008.

I have a process which creates temp files in the c:windows\temp folder whenever a file is printed. doesn't matter how the file is created. I think this may be due to a propitiatory audit program by teh printer mfg. Any one know of a program that can monitor a folder and show which process created a file?

I am not sure where to put this question. Please direct me to the right group. I am getting Event ID 9690 and 9175 errors under Event Viewer Application. ID 9690 shows Exchange Store "First Storage group\mailbox store (Exchange server)": The logical size of the database (the logical size equals the physial size of the .edb file and the .stm file minus the logical free space in each) is 18GB. This database size has exceeded the size limit of 18GB. This database will be dismunted immediately. How can I fix these two event ID errors. I would appreciate any help .

Software Compatibility Question (Forced Install)
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 1 reply
I have a piece of software I am trying to install on Server 2008. The setup will say that it can only install on Windows 2000, XP, or Vista. Now, even in compatibility mode (right clicking on the setup and telling it to run in a different layer) it tells me that it can only install in 2K, XP, or Vista. What can it be looking at to know the difference even in a compatibility layer? It isn't a system utility, its some test scoring software. Thanks, Dan

I'm running windows 2003 Server on a Dell PE2500. As the server is being used much more as a heavy print server, the system drive keeps running out of space due to a build up of tmp files. Is there a way to change the location of the tmp files from the spooler to another larger drive ?

Exceeding 85% Disk Quotas Report Header
by Guest Scott- 0 replies
On Server 2003 R2 SP2 we are running disk quotas with warnings to users at 85%. The email warnings which are sent to users are very confusing because, rather than having a header that emphasizes that they are approaching their quota, the report has the following header and subject: Duplicate Files Report Generated in response to a quota 85% threshold exceeded notification on 'E:\Users\Jonesj'. Generated at: 10/9/2008 10:40:51 AM Report Description: Lists files that appear to be duplicates (files with same name, size and last modified time). Use this report to quickly identify and reclaim disk space wasted because of duplication. Is there any way to mo…

Disable the homepage from auto appearing as desktop when active desktop is enabled?
by Guest Andrew Story- 1 reply

Sorry this is multiposted in public.win2000.general - not a busy forum so I've posted here also (apologies in advance) Hello I have numerous desktops running windows XP who's users have a policy puching out corporate wallpaper, which requires active desktop to be enabled. The same users logon to a Win2k terminal server, and active desktop (with it being enabled for the user account) gives every user the homepage when they logon. Is it possible to have this feature disabled? I think it must be in the default user profile somehow but unsure, can someone help? Thanks

Domain troubles
by Guest Huston- 6 replies

I have two groups of machines. One group(A) is on a domain, and the other group(B) is not. Both groups are behind the same firewall. There is a program that I have that needs access to a specific site. The group that is not on the domain works...... The group that is on the domain doesn't. Where can I start looking? What might cause this? Ask questions if you need more information, or point me in the right direction if I am in the wrong group. Any help is appreciated... Thanks Shawn Huston

Sharing encrypted folder
by Guest DPM- 1 reply

Environment: Server2008-x64 enterprise, XPpro SP2 client. I want to set up a shared encrypted folder on Server2008, so I: 1.. Logged on the server as admin and created folder "secure", marked it as encrypted. 2.. This new encrypted folder inherited full-control access permissions from user x. 3.. I go to my XP machine, map a network drive to "secure" using user x. So far, so good. 4.. I try to write a file to "secure"; permission is denied. 5.. I then go back to the server and copy the file to "secure" - no problem. 6.. On XP I export x's certificate (both keys) and successfully import it into the server. 7.. On the server I try to add …

VSS Error Event ID: 8193 and Application Popup 333
by Guest nja- 3 replies

Hi! I've got some trouble with our Fileserver. Everytime I restore a shadow copy (I use shadow copys for shared folders), there are errors in the Eventlog. First of all, the Eventlog is full of ApplicationPopup 333 errors. During the Backup job for all the Server, there is an error at the fileserver, and the backup Job aborts. I use Symantec BackupExec for the Tape Backup. This is the Event ID from the Fileserver Eventlog, wich generates the Backup error: Product: Windows Operating System ID: 8193 Source: VSS Version: 5.2 Symbolic Name: VSS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED_CALLING_ROUTINE Message: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling ro…

Accessing workgroup resources from a domain, goofy issue
by Guest wwworldwideweb@gmail.com- 1 reply

OK, so I'm having a strange issue. I've created a new domain for some office computers (SBS 2003 and XP Pro) and moved them all into it. There are some resources that cannot be moved into the domain though. There's a printer and another Windows 2003 file server that needs to be kept in the workgroup for unrelated business reasons. When the client computers first login they can access the printer and the file shares fine. Then, after oh say 45 minutes or so they lose access to them. All the same usernames/passwords exist in both the domain and the file server. The shares and NTFS security are wide open. I tried net use persistent:yes but no luck I thought …

Application needs to Authicate with AD
by Guest Sanjay Mehta- 0 replies

Hi, I have an application called Sage FR100 installed. We have a site by site VPN connection with our regional office. So they can see our DNS servers via the Linkssys router but their IP scheme is on a different subnet. Also those PC's are not joined to the domain. They are connected to each other via a peer to peer network. Whenever we start this application, I get a password prompt where I enter domain\user and the password. Shouldn't that authenticate against AD and give me access to the application? Instead I get the following error: Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18452 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Login…
